Chapter 108
As Lou’s crying grew louder, Celine ran down the tunnel, following only the sound.
“Celine.”
Soon, Leonhard caught up with her.
“It’s dangerous, so take your time…”
Before he could finish talking, her legs stopped. It was because a strange heat could be felt from the other side of the tunnel. She covered herself and Leonhard’s bodies with cold energy.
“….!”
They got goosebumps.
The heat tore the cold formed by the magic like a sheet of paper.
Leonhard said quietly.
“I think it would be better not to engage in unnecessary confrontation.”
“Since when has Lou been like that?”
“….”
“Is there anything I can help you with….”
As Celine slurred her words, Leonhard patted her shoulder.
“I don’t think there’s any need to worry for now. We may need to be careful, though.”
She nodded her head. Leonhard was right.
‘I was so agitated.’
She could not notice any negative elements in Count Sharpe’s story. However, the situation could change drastically in a day.
Celine walked slowly toward the heat with Leonhard.
Because of the heat, the inside of the shaft felt more like a passage near a volcano than a mine. How long has it been? As they walked along the heat, they came to the end of the mine shaft and entered a part closer to a natural cave.
It was then.
Her eyes widened.
“Lou…!”
Deep in the cave, something large and shiny with golden light caught her eye.
It was definitely Lou.
While Celine quickly walked down the stairs, trying not to fall, Leonhard followed closely behind her. When they finally reached a place where Lou was fully visible, the dragon, which seemed to be twice the size of an adult man, was crouching down and letting out a suppressed cry.
“Lou!”
As Celine called out to Lou, it raised its head. As soon as their eyes met, the crying that had been going on until now suddenly stopped, and the golden wings spread wide.
Lou flew inside the narrow cave and came towards them.
Leonhard took a step back and looked very wary, but Celine took a step forward again. Fortunately, Lou showed no hostility and stopped right in front of her, blinking slowly at her.
“Lou…”
Celine placed her hand on Lou’s back and then pulled it away in surprise.
It was clear that the heat she felt earlier had been created by it because its back was as hot as a hot stone at the moment. Still, she didn’t sense any aggression from it. Rather, Lou was happy to see her, prancing around like a horse meeting its owner for the first time in a long time.
She examined it carefully.
Lou didn’t seem to have any problems right now, but the painful cries that came from her entrance were clearly unusual.
‘….’
Celine bit her lip.
A cool ray of sweat ran down her back.
“Lou.”
Leonhard’s voice came from behind.
“Celine, this is…”
“Can you see Leonhard, too?”
Leonhard nodded his head quietly.
Celine closed her eyes. Her eyes watered, not because of the heat Lou radiated but because of the truth that consumed her heart.
A dragon was actually a creature made of magical energy.
If there was a problem with the flow of the magic, the dragon couldn’t survive. At first glance, Lou’s magic was like that of a majestic dragon with powerful magical power, but upon closer inspection, a dark energy was coiled at the center.
‘… It’s the energy of a warlock.’
She didn’t know where Lou had been for the past three months, but it was clear it had been in contact with a warlock.
Leonhard lightly pulled Celine back.
“It’s dangerous. Don’t get too close.”
“But…”
“You have one life now.”
Celine had no choice but to step away because of the affection and concern contained in those words. Nonetheless, she did not leave the place right away.
“Maybe I can help.”
“…It seems dangerous.”
“It’s okay as long as Leonhard helps me stay out of danger.”
Leonhard frowned.
“Celine, before we begin, please explain what you want to do. In detail.”
“To suck up all the warlock’s energy.”
“…Celine.”
Leonhard called to her softly. He was opposed to it.
“It’s too dangerous.”
“If it weren’t for Leonhard, I wouldn’t have even dared.”
“…What can I do?”
“I will unleash the black magic. Please neutralize it.”
He looked at her in silence for a moment. Celine could fully guess how complicated his thoughts were from his stiffened, hard face.
The biggest one among them was…
‘He must be worried about me.’
Despite the fact that she didn’t like making Leonhard worry, she still couldn’t leave Lou suffering like this.
Her decision was not just due to old ties.
If Lou was left unattended, she could suffer from the warlock’s energy and become the crazed dragon from history books. The grown dragons she saw in the book were wise, having spent hundreds of years by the side of humans. However, Lou only spent a few months by her side, let alone hundreds of years.
‘It’s been less than half a year.’
There was no way Lou would know how to wisely respond to contact with a warlock. Celine didn’t wait any longer for Leonhard’s proper answer and approached Lou.
Rather than stopping her, he pulled out Rashir and took a ready stance.
She had no physical contact with Lou. Instead, she tried to draw the flow of the magic surrounding Lou towards herself. Most of her magic was the unique pure magic emanating from the magic stone. Nevertheless, there was a black energy mixed in that felt like a foreign substance.
Celine did not hesitate.
She dived into the black energy, separating it from the pure magic around it.
Of course, the black energy did not stay still. The traces of the warlock, who seemed to have already consumed a significant portion of Lou, clung to her when it realized that it could no longer cling to Lou.
‘… It’s an attack magic.’
She was able to find out its identity from the black energy. The warlock that Lou met while wandering seemed to have attacked a grown dragon that suddenly appeared.
‘I guess I should say I’m glad it didn’t try to appease the dragon.’
Her head went cold.
It was because if the warlock was thinking of taking advantage of Lou, they would be thinking about how to take the dragon with him by now. At the same time, she screamed as she drew out the mark of the warlock that attacked Lou.
“Leonhard!”
Leonhard instantly cut down and neutralized the attack magic erupting from her. It happened in just a matter of seconds. Then, she looked at the dragon in front of her even as she was breathing heavily.
“Lou…”
Fortunately, there was no more pain in Lou’s eyes, and the moaning that had torn her heart was no longer heard. She gently placed her hand on Lou’s scales.
“Phew….”
A sigh of relief came out. The heat that had heated Lou to a strange degree had also completely disappeared.
‘I guess it was some kind of fever.’
Just like the human body that generated heat in response to a virus, the strange heat was also an attempt by Lou’s body to expel the energy of the invading warlock.
“Thank goodness.”
Leonhard came right up to the side and looked at Lou.
“I was constantly worried that something was wrong.”
“Thank you.”
“….”
There was no special expression on his face, but she could tell that he was happy.
“Now, what are you going to do?”
“We can’t kick Lou out of here right now. Because it will only backfire…”
In fact, it was easy to get Lou out of the mine in a weakened state. But if that happened, Lou would fall into the same or even worse danger.
“If we keep leaving it here, it will continue to pick up magic stones and get into trouble.”
Leonhard spoke worriedly.
“But I’m not Lou’s master right now… Lou has grown up.”
“It’s too early.”
He sighed.
“It was part of the prophecy… I had no choice.”
As time passed, Celine began to realize how much the stage and the things that it had influenced made no sense in this world. And just how determined was Leonhard to follow her just because she said it was a prophecy.
Lou’s sudden growth was also such an unusual event that there was not a single example among the many books about dragons. If the dragon had stayed by the side of ordinary humans for hundreds of years, it would never have been attacked by a warlock.
‘…Wait’
When Celine slowly began to move back, Leonhard looked at her with a puzzled look.
“I need to meet the wizard who analyzed Lou.”
“Why?”
“There’s no way it wouldn’t have noticed the warlock’s traces.”
Leonhard’s eyes widened.
“That means…”
“Yes. Lou recently met a warlock. They’re probably still around here.”
“…There is a possibility that the wizard didn’t say anything.”
His words even implied the possibility that the wizard of Count Sharpe’s family was a warlock.
“Even if I didn’t say it, Count Sharpe would definitely have mentioned it if Lou had continued to be like this.”
“I guess so.”
Leonhard nodded his head.
“You are right. If things had continued like this, she would have definitely warned us even more. There’s no way she would have said she would send just the two of us.”
Celine frowned.
It would have taken a few days just to make the magic stone that would travel between Bernoulli Castle and Sharpe Castle. It may have taken just a day or two for them to decide to come to Leonhard and Celine—a week for an estimate—and in the meanwhile, Lou was attacked by a warlock.
Before they knew it, they had reached a point where Lou was nowhere to be seen.
—Boom!
The two turned around reflexively.
“….!”
Celine’s eyes widened. This was because Lou was flying from the other side of the shaft, flapping its wings.
“Lou…”
As Lou approached her at high speed, folded its wings and clung to her side, Leonhard was more taken aback than her.
“Why, why is it like this?
“I don’t know…”
She swallowed a gulp and looked at Lou. It seemed that Lou just didn’t want to leave her side, and Celine didn’t see any problems with it.
‘I think it’s okay.’
Leonhard said with a serious face.
“Did it recognize you as its master again?”
“No way!”
Celine waved her hand.
However, when she saw Lou following her even when she walked and ran, she couldn’t help but think that Leonhard’s guess might be right. Before they knew it, they had reached the entrance of the mine, accompanied by Lou.
It was a completely dark night outside. Because it wasn’t summer yet, the night air was quite chilly.
In the meanwhile, Count Sharpe was resting with a small bonfire lit.
“Lord Leonhard, Lute. How was it inside…!”
Count Sharp got up and, seeing Lou, was frightened and sat down on the ground.
Celine let out a sigh.
“Somehow, it ended up like this.”
