Chapter 109
“By some chance, you brought out a grown dragon?”
Count Sharpe’s voice trembled with excitement, though there was no trace of anger or fear. Rather, it was just the pure excitement of seeing a dragon up close.
“I guess it recognized you because you were the old owner.”
“Yes.”
Celine nodded her head.
She had been worried that Count Sharpe might be scared of Lou, who had caused great harm to the mine, but it seemed that it was unfounded.
“Can I touch it?”
Count Sharpe’s voice sounded so earnest that Celine burst out laughing.
“Of course.”
Count Sharpe carefully placed her hand on Lou’s scales.
“….!”
She slowly removed her hand and muttered softly.
“This is a dragon.”
“Yes.”
“Really… it’s a great presence.”
She barely took her eyes off Lou and looked at Celine and Leonhard.
“Are you going to keep taking it with you from now on?”
“N, no.”
Celine answered right away.
Lou was a grown dragon. So while it may stay with her temporarily, it would have to go away at some point.
‘Still, I don’t know what to do right now… It would be a good idea to take it with me until I get rid of that warlock.’
If she didn’t kill the warlock, she didn’t know when Lou would end up in the same situation again.
‘It would be a good idea to decide on a place to live.’
It was not possible to let Lou leave right away just by killing the warlock. Lou also wouldn’t leave her side if it didn’t feel safe.
Celine let out a sigh.
She originally thought that all she had to do was communicate with Lou and get it out of the mine, but there was so much to do.
“Are you asking me to prepare a room?”
The chief maid’s eyes got so big that they seemed like they were about to pop out. She seemed to be unable to come to her senses as she kept looking at Lou and Celine alternately.
“Yes.”
Celine nodded her head calmly.
“Is there no suitable room?”
“That’s not it…”
Fortunately, the chief maid guided her to a room that was said to have been used in the distant past by a race that was much taller than a human. There was no special furniture, but after several maids came and went, a rather nice room was completed.
Celine, lying on a cot, fell asleep while looking at Lou, who was curled up on the floor with its body in a circle and eyes slowly blinking.
The next morning.
It was only in the dark of night that Celine realized that she was very lucky to have taken Lou with her back to Castle Sharpe.
As soon as she opened her eyes, she heard a bustle outside the door.
She opened the door, thinking it must have been the sound of workers coming to put in some proper furniture.
“….?”
However, it was almost everyone in Castle Sharpe who welcomed her. Celine muttered absentmindedly as she looked at the crowd of people who had gathered like a cloud in front of the door.
“Wh, what’s going on?”
Everyone started talking loudly about their answers.
Celine, who had just woken up and was in a dazed state, could only understand words like ‘dragon,’ ‘holy,’ and ‘danger.’
‘…Did they come to protest because they thought Lou is dangerous?’
Nonetheless, that didn’t mean everyone was looking at her with admiration. She then remembered that dragons are considered sacred in the South.
Just then, someone appeared through the crowd.
It was Leonhard.
“Celine, this way.”
She tried not to wake Lou as she slowly walked towards Leonhard, but she was wrong. It was because Lou was already awake.
“Celine, Lou…”
Celine looked behind at his urgent voice.
Lou was slowly walking towards her. It looked uncomfortable as it flapped its wings slowly, causing people around it to quickly get out of the way. She could feel pure awe and surprise in their gazes, not fear.
‘…That’s glad.’
Deep down, she was worried about what would happen if she kicked Lou out.
She had no intention of sticking around with Lou like this for the rest of her life, but Lou would have to stay by her side until its condition stabilized. She intended to stay in Castle Sharpe until she caught the warlock, so she desperately needed the consent of the people in the castle.
Celine thought that if she left with Leonhard, the people who came to see Lou would naturally disperse. However, people followed them around, like Lou following her.
In fact, the more she moved, the more the crowd seemed to increase.
‘… It’s too much!’
Fortunately, Lou didn’t seem to feel much resistance, perhaps because it met a lot of people when it was a small dragon cub.
“Leonhard, where are you going?”
“Meet Lute Dave.”
“Dave…?”
“A wizard from the Sharpe family.”
The blue-grey eyes widened. She was finally able to meet the wizard who read the magic of Celine and Leonhard in Lou.
“You look happy.”
“Should I not?”
“…There is nothing you can’t do.”
She chuckled.
“All right. I will try not to look happy.”
“What are you talking about?”
However, Leonhard was unable to hide the corners of his mouth that were slowly rising. As the two entered a narrow corridor, Celine breathed a sigh of relief. If she entered that corridor, she wouldn’t have to deal with this crowd anymore.
—Thud!
Celine jumped up.
Lou entered without thinking and ended up hitting the ceiling of the corridor hard. She immediately checked its condition. Thankfully, the dragon didn’t seem to have a single crack in its scales, but the condition of the corridor was different. The ornate entrance decoration was torn in half.
She tried to ignore the murmur of the crowd.
Leonhard muttered calmly.
“It was too difficult to pass through here.”
“Did you bring me here knowingly?”
“I heard we are capable of passing through.”
“….”
Only then did she remember that Leonhard did not like wizards at all.
He nodded towards her.
“You stay here with Lou. I’ll call them right away.”
“Come quickly.”
“Of course.”
Celine leaned her body against Lou’s back.
‘Lou… Why did you grow up so fast?’
She felt bitter because she already knew the answer.
Lou’s growth was already established from the beginning. In fact, even at the time of the growth, Celine was not happy that the stage was finally over.
Well, she didn’t know what the consequences would be for Lou.
Finally, Leonhard, Count Sharpe, and a wizard she had never seen before appeared.
“It’s an honor to meet you, Lute Celine.”
“So do I. You’re Lute Dave, right?”
The Sharpe Castle’s wizard and Celine exchanged brief greetings. Lute Dave was a middle-aged man with a sharp look who seemed to have been through all sorts of hardships.
“Did you wait long?”
“No.”
Celine shook her head but couldn’t hide her fatigue. As soon as Leonhard left, the people gathered more and more around her as if they were waiting.
Worried that Lou would be stressed out, she shooed away the people. The fellow human being was also on the verge of collapsing from the stress, so how could Lou not be so upset? Fortunately, the crowd dispersed in an instant as soon as Count Sharpe glared at them.
“Sorry. Lord Leonhard said that it would be impossible to pass through here… I was short-sighted.”
“That’s okay.”
She didn’t add that it was Sharpe Castle that suffered damage anyway. The next best place they moved to was the open training ground where the Sharpe family knights trained. Count Sharpe may have given orders in advance, as not a single knight was seen.
Luo spread its wings wide as if it felt happy to be out in the open space.
Count Sharpe opened her mouth.
“Lord Leonhard has already explained most of it. I heard the dragon came into contact with a warlock.”
“Yes.”
Celine nodded her head.
“I don’t know when Lute Dave met Lou…”
“It was two days before the Count left for the North.”
“So, it would have been three days ago.”
Celine bit her lip.
Just three days.
In the meanwhile, Lou was attacked by a warlock and almost became a crazed dragon.
“Yes.”
Leonhard frowned in the affirmative, then turned to Count Sharpe and asked.
“Why didn’t the mine close down?”
The Count sighed.
“Maybe the dragon will be able to come out. In that case, we thought blocking would cause unnecessary anger.”
She felt sorry.
Count Sharpe’s judgment was sound, but sound choices did not always produce the best results.
“No matter where the warlock is, there is a high probability that it would not have escaped the county.”
“We have to find it.”
Celine added to Leonhard’s words.
Lute Dave frowned.
“I haven’t felt the energy of a warlock recently. It was the same in mines. There have been no suspicious reports.”
“Could it be a warlock who has just awakened?”
Leonhard shook his head with a stiff face.
“If that were the case, they wouldn’t have been able to hide their traces like this. There would already be traces all over.”
“That’s right.”
Celine let out a sigh.
“And although Lou is still young, it is a grown dragon. It’s been around a lot with you and been through a lot of warlocks. It wouldn’t have been beaten by just anyone.”
A heavy silence fell.
She realized that things were not as easy as she thought.
“Are all the other mines properly managed?”
Count Sharpe seemed somewhat offended by the fact that Leonhard suspected the mines as a warlock’s base but did not make it clear.
“We are in a desperate situation, so it has been a long time since we have been working in all areas at all times. There won’t be a single area out of sight of the miners.”
“But, a warlock can control people…”
“If that were the case, there would have been a problem with the amount of mining.”
“I see.”
Leonhard nodded his head.
“Then, are there any other places the warlock could base himself? Rich in natural magic, or it’s rich in life.”
Count Sharpe looked contemplative.
“Or, on the contrary, they use wastelands as their base. Seeing that it wasn’t reported, it’s clear that they used a place with few people as their base.”
Celine bit her lip.
There were too many variables.
Count Sharpe frowned.
“The South is a land of plenty. So there are so many places with so much life that I can’t pinpoint them. Especially if it’s late spring like now.”
“So, what about the wasteland?”
“Wasteland…”
Count Sharpe hesitated for a moment.
“There is one place. But I’m not sure if that’s right.”
“What does it mean?”
“There is a small village that was completely isolated by a landslide that occurred more than a hundred years ago. It’s probably a wasteland now.”
“….!”
She had a hunch.
It seemed that if a warlock were to establish a new home, there would be no better location than that.
Leonhard seemed to think the same way.
“We should leave right away.”
