Chapter 5
Grateful Woman
In the meanwhile, Olivia’s big, round eyes curved into a half-moon shape and her lips turned upward.
“I, I want to go! Can I reply via international mail?”
Seeing that, Margo raised her eyebrows and shook her head slightly.
“You don’t know the arrogance of the royal family, Olivia. The moment you announce that you are going, there are already people there to take you.”
So, technically, this wasn’t actually an invitation.
As Olivia blinked her eyes with a confused face, Margot sighed softly. It would be a big trouble by sending this young girl out alone to Herod and to the autumn banquet.
Should they go together… It was very annoying.
Olivia headed straight home.
She was nineteen this year. Having graduated early from Herodington University with the highest honors, she failed at all of her job searches while all of her classmates had decent jobs.
Just as her lungs seemed to be shrinking from the harsh reality, an invitation from Herod made her heart flutter.
She handed the pay to the coachman and quickly got out of the carriage. Then, she ran towards a small house with wisteria-draped on the exterior wall.
Of course, her grandmother would say no, though she still wanted to get permission this time.
Meanwhile, Susanna, who was spending her free time in her study, woke up at the sound of an approaching carriage and looked out the window. Sure enough, she saw Olivia running across the garden towards the mansion.
A faint smile appeared on the gloomy face.
She could hear the small, noisy footsteps, then the door opened and Olivia stuck her head out.
“Grandma!
“Welcome, Liv. Did you have a good time?”
As soon as she opened the door, a gloomy atmosphere filled her, but Olivia smiled brighter the more she did.
“Oh my gosh, please open the curtains.”
She pulled back the curtains to let the sunlight into every corner of her study before sitting down in front of her grandmother.
She hoped that the sadness and helplessness that permeated her grandmother’s wrinkles and furrows would fade in the sunlight.
Olivia chatted for a while, talking about random things, and Susanna laughed for a moment while listening to her granddaughter’s chatter. After talking for a while, she paused for a moment and quietly took out an invitation to the royal family.
“What is this?”
She answered her grandmother’s question carefully.
“This is an invitation addressed to me.”
Susanna placed her reading glasses on the table over her nose and took the envelope Olivia handed her. However, the material of the envelope in her hand was unusual.
She hurriedly took the card out of the envelope, and an ornate sentence appeared that she could not possibly recognize. Although she was a commoner, Susanna, who had been doing business with Herod for a long time, immediately recognized it as the coat of arms of Herod’s royal family.
When Susanna gazed at her in surprise, Olivia quickly added an explanation.
“I guess I became known in Herod as the first female student at Herodington University.”
“No.”
Responding to such an immediate objection, Olivia put on a pleading look.
“Grandma.”
“No, Liv. It’s even worse.”
Olivia was beautiful, enough for anyone to look back. However, she had no father or brother to be her legal guardian and was even a commoner.
To show her like that to Herod, and even to the nobles?
That could never happen.
Her grandmother’s attitude was very strong. As she had somewhat expected, Olivia played her last card.
“Grandma, Professor Marguerite is coming with me.”
Susanna, who had been shaking her head resolutely, paused at that.
“Princess Marguerite?”
Olivia smiled brightly and quickly nodded her head.
“Yes, she told people from the royal family that she would go with me. I really want to go! Okay? Grandma~”
She stared blankly at Olivia, who was pestering her for the first time in a very long time. She felt like someone was strangling her when her granddaughter asked her with that expression for the first time in a long time.
Susanna, who had been silent for a long time, managed to ask Olivia, who was looking at her with an earnest face.
“…Do you really want to go to Herod?”
“Yes.”
Susanna sighed deeply at the answer that was given without hesitation. Still, she couldn’t give consent easily, so she looked down at the royal invitation for a long time. She sent Olivia away to think about it a little more and ended up staying up all night.
When dawn came, her wrinkled eyes opened as she stared at the pictures of her family hanging on her wall.
The girl who smiled innocently in the arms of her father and mother grew into a lady who smiled brightly at her gloomy grandmother.
Yes, why not.
She who lost her parents in an instant and left there…
Finally, early in the morning, Susanna returned her royal invitation to Olivia and said as if she were making a promise.
“No matter what happens, you must not leave Princess Marguerite. Never walk alone, and always stay close to her.”
As soon as she said those words, Olivia raised her hands high, cheered, and hugged her grandmother.
“Yes, yes! I will definitely do that!”
Her eyes continued to shine even as she endured her grandmother’s endless nagging.
Herod! How much she wanted to go!
So a few days later, she boarded a ship bound for Pulder with Professor Marguerite. It was a long journey that took two weeks, as it was a time when sea monsters appeared, so they couldn’t take a straight route, yet Olivia’s expression was brighter than ever.
Meanwhile, at that time, sea monsters were in full swing Herodington Bay. Spring and summer, when monsters go through their rut and egg-laying seasons, were truly disaster seasons, and fall and winter were so peaceful that there were almost no attacks.
The Magic Dome struck every monster that came within its range.
The Magic Dome developed by Wilhelm was truly an innovation. All the wizards had to do was pour the magic power into the magic charging terminal. Of course, that was not easy either. A white spray arose, and small Krakens hiding in the sea overturned the boat and floated to the surface.
“My God, shi—why don’t you do your turn?!”
Pierre, who had been supplying magic to the Magic Dome main body for several hours, grabbed his shaking legs and shouted.
Noah Astrid, the head of the Naval Special Forces, has been unable to come to the official residence recently due to various interviews, and as a result, the duties of his deputy, Pierre, have become more important.
Ah, d*mn it, I feel like I’m going to die! When on earth is Noah Astrid coming?!
“Stop cursing me in your head, Pierre.”
He felt someone’s presence on his shoulder, and Pierre’s hand, which was barely resting on the charging terminal, was moved aside.
Noah, wearing a sleek black suit instead of a navy uniform, took off his thin summer gloves, stuffed them into his pocket, placed his bare hand on the charging terminal, and poured out his magic without even paying attention to Pierre, who was sprawled out.
The Magic Dome, whose magic had weakened, resumed its fierce bombardment as if responding to the fresh magic. The momentum of the soaring water stream was different.
As the cheering voices of the navy rang out from the shore, Pierre got up and muttered.
“Oh, why on earth are there so many interviews with you? I thought I was going to die because I was doing it alone.”
Noah deftly removed a cigarette with his free left hand.
“If you don’t reduce that, you will be short-lived.”
“Shut up.”
Noah ignored Pierre’s advice and looked impassively at the splendidly exploding magical fireworks.
He was on his way after threatening not to contact his father for the time being, as he was told to go to one more event. Fortunately, the girl from Pulder was said to be coming to Herod, so he was planning on leaving at this point.
