Chapter 95
The carriage ride back to the mansion was filled with silence as no words were exchanged, no glances were shared, and no gestures were made. Yet, deep down, Chloe and Eric understood. Today’s events had brought them slightly closer and offered a glimmer of hope amidst their previous despair.
…Perhaps they could start anew.
Still, uncertainties still lingered.
Her heart wasn’t fully prepared to embrace Eric completely, and he knew that she wouldn’t easily open up about what had transpired. Considering the pain he had caused her, he didn’t expect a swift resolution.
She has a strong will, and something as trivial as this wouldn’t easily shake her resolve.
As Eric’s gaze fixated on Chloe, her eyes lowered.
He meant every word he had spoken to her earlier. He truly believed she would come, and he had been willing to wait for her… indefinitely. All that time he spent waiting for her, memories of the past flooded his mind. He wondered what she might have been thinking when she patiently waited for him.
Likely, Chloe’s thoughts mirrored his own.
She had believed he would come, that he simply needed time, so all she had to do was wait for him. In the same way, he had waited for her with unwavering faith, never considering the possibility that she might not come.
And now, she had indeed come to see him.
The overwhelming joy he felt in that moment filled his heart as if something precious had been restored.
Maybe this was love, Eric thought so vaguely.
However, his thoughts were cut short by his body’s fatigue and stiffness from standing in the snow for an extended period.
Cough.
Eric let out a cold cough.
“Are you sick?”
Chloe asked, startled by the sound of coughing.
“Did you catch a cold?”
He could see the worry and pity on her face. He really didn’t want to see that kind of face in her, he didn’t want to be sympathized by her… but not now. Eric now wanted Chloe to sympathize with him more. He was happy she would take care of him, so although he wasn’t very sick, he wanted to feign illness.
“I don’t know. But I can’t say that my body is completely fine.”
“….”
Chloe felt guilty. It was clear that the reason Eric he sick was that he was snowed on by waiting for him.
She hasn’t seen him sick in five years…
Of course, since they weren’t together often, she might not have known if he was sick. But in any case, Eric was a healthy person in her eyes. The fact that she caused such a healthy person to get sick came as a pretty big shock.
So she leaned forward, having more concerns than before.
“Why don’t we call the doctor as soon as we return to the mansion?”
“Not that bad.”
“But what if it turns into pneumonia!”
She had a terrible image… the image of Eric’s cough getting worse and his body rapidly deteriorating. Just imagining it was terrifying. She didn’t want him to go through the pain she was going through.
After thinking this far, she realized that she still loved Eric and that she was deeply concerned about him.
Chloe was frustrated again.
She thought she had already abandoned everything called emotion, but that she was still feeling love like this.
She was really foolish and pathetic.
Still, she knew, too, that emotions are irresistible things that couldn’t be controlled by oneself, in other words, intangible things that couldn’t be disliked even if one dislikes them. So, she had to accept her feelings silently.
She hated Eric, but she loved him.
She wished he would cry for her, but she didn’t want to hurt him…
How contradictory was this thought? But again, since her feelings had always been opposites, Chloe calmed her down by catching her breath. Even if she admitted it, she didn’t want Eric to find out about it.
“You shouldn’t be sick, so call the doctor.”
“Are you worried about me?”
Eric asked in a slightly excited voice. This was because of what he thought earlier, that he wanted Chloe to worry about and sympathize with him. He let out a groan bordering on amazement as Chloe nodded her head.
Oh, how moved was he!
He then opened his lips in admiration, for he had changed this much because of the feeling of love and that he could change this much.
“Come to think of it, it does seem a bit painful. I keep coughing, too.”
As he decided to fake it a bit more. He seemed to be able to feign something like this if only he could buy her attention.
“Your hands are rather cold, so it would be nice if you could touch my forehead.”
He glanced at Chloe’s frozen hands. He had been outside for a long time in the snow and the cold wind, but he must have been warmer than her in the first place.
“Can you give it to me? Even for a moment.”
After some hesitation, she mustered the courage to reach out to Eric. With a tinge of guilt and a sense of familiarity, she gently placed her hand on his forehead.
First, her fingertips made contact, followed by the warmth of her palms and wrist. Chloe could feel the coldness in her own hands slowly dissipating as they absorbed Eric’s heat. It didn’t take long for her palms to grow warm in response to his feverish temperature.
Chloe’s eyes widened in surprise.
“You have a fever. That’s bad.”
Eric wasn’t aware of it, but he had a much higher body temperature than usual. He was really hot. Nonetheless, he was just glad that Chloe was so surprised and worried about him.
“So, I’d like you to touch me a little more.”
It was somehow embarrassing.
Chloe’s cheeks blushed, but Eric seemed unconcerned. As he leaned his face against her hand again, she swallowed her embarrassment and stroked his forehead generously. The carriage, which had been filled with silence, suddenly became warm.
It was snowy outside, but inside, the carriage was full of warmth. They couldn’t even think of what happened before.
“D*mn it!”
Upon his return to the royal palace, William wasted no time in removing his necktie and tossing it aside in frustration, accompanied by a string of expletives.
Normally, he portrayed himself as a calm and composed individual, almost to the point of pretense. However, there were certain triggers that could easily disrupt his inner peace. The events of today had clearly crossed that threshold, exposing his true temperament.
Hence, he found it unbearable and resorted to venting his anger in such a manner.
“What about brother? Where is brother?”
As William asked the bewildered attendant, the attendant shook his head before answering in a hurry.
“He, he is in the main office.”
“Whoo.”
With a hand running through his disheveled hair, William turned the doorknob and made his way towards the main building, his destination being the office of the Second Prince, Haras.
What Chloe said today hugely shocked him.
His emotions for her ran deep, and witnessing her plight was nothing short of a shock. However, what shook him even further was the realization that Haras, despite being aware of the situation, had attempted to facilitate a connection between William and Chloe!
…Trying to put a woman who was waiting to die to him?
What was brother thinking?
With determined strides, he reached the main building and forcefully knocked on the door of Haras’ office. In response, a voice from inside beckoned him to enter, and without hesitation, William pushed past the attendant and stepped into the room.
“Brother!”
Haras didn’t let go of his pen even though he was clearly aware that he had entered, which made William even more annoyed. He approached Haras’ desk.
“How can you do this to me?”
As William shouted, Haras slowly raised his eyes and he looked at him and narrowed his brows slightly.
“What are you talking about?”
“Chloe!”
William shouted as he slammed the desk with both hands.
“Were you thinking of attaching to me a woman who was about to die? Then what will I be? A widowed man who cannot even remarry!”
Haras finally let go of the pen he was holding.
“Is Chloe dying?”
Haras was slightly taken aback because he only knew that she was sick though he hadn’t thought that she was going to die. Come to think of it, when the Marquis talked about Chloe, he seemed nervous. It was as if he was longing for something.
“I see… no wonder. Somehow the Marquis was strange.”
William’s eyes widened at Haras’ muttering.
“…You mean you didn’t even know?”
“If I had known, I would have told you. Do you not trust me that much?”
William had his doubts, but Haras would be very angry if he were to say more. Eventually, he shook his head.
“…No.”
With his quick nod, Haras crossed his arms and narrowed his eyes.
“That means Chloe is going to die anyway.”
“Yes. She will.”
“It’s better. If Chloe dies, I can push through the marriage to Elizabeth. When did she say she would die?”
It was like they didn’t care at all about their friendship, as if Chloe and they were strangers… No, on the contrary, they spoke as if they were dealing with someone else. To be asking for the date of death. If Chloe had been by his side, she would have fainted from shock.
“I’m not sure about that, but I think it’s probably near.”
“That’s good.”
Haras twitched his lips in joy.
“No, it’s not.”
Then, he suddenly squinted one eye.
“No way…”
He opened and closed his fists, pressing his tongue gently against the flesh of his mouth.
“You’re not clinging to infinite power research more because of Chloe’s death, are you?”
As the Second Prince in charge of all duties, Haras was quick-witted. That was why he was able to infer the relationship between Eric and Chloe in a bit more detail. He immediately looked at William.
“Go find out where Chloe is sick and what the Marquis is doing.”
The next moment, he muttered in a cold voice.
“For our purposes, Chloe must die somehow.”
