Chapter 94
The snowfall was intense, with heaps of snow accumulating on a frigid day, resulting in icy and treacherous road conditions. Nevertheless, the carriage persevered, moving forward despite the hazardous circumstances.
It was because Chloe told it so.
Observing the landscape whizzing by, she anxiously nibbled on her lip. If she knew it would be like this, she wouldn’t have broken her appointment with Eric…
Even though she regretted it, it was a very belated regret.
However, Chloe remained oblivious to her wrongdoing, as previously stated, due to the deep-seated vengeance within her. Moreover, a malicious desire for Eric to experience some form of pain lay concealed within her.
Yet, witnessing her overwhelming nervousness and regret, it became apparent that she might not be entirely devoid of goodness. While she didn’t perceive her actions as wrong, she knew that she hadn’t done something good.
In addition, the conversation with William… it gave her a huge shock. Chloe didn’t expect William to act this far.
“Shit. What will happen to me when you die?!”
“The royal family decided Elizabeth’s marriage would be to the marquis! So all I had is to bring you, but you’re dying soon! Damn it! Where did it go wrong!”
He didn’t actually care about her at all. Her death, her pain, her sorrow…… none of them. He was angry because he was only thinking of himself.
How could this be?
A man she thought she could trust… someone reliable, someone trustworthy.
But how, how could he say such things? In the first place, he was someone she had trusted for over a decade. However, because of today’s incident, the times she had believed in him had become so useless.
Ah, what could be more terrible!
Chloe buried her face in his hands and exhaled heavily.
While thinking about this, she wondered if she might have interpreted William and the people of the royal family from her own point of view.
Perhaps they were bad people from the beginning, but the young Chloe, who longed for affection, couldn’t distinguish people and just liked them unconditionally and tried to define them as good people?
In fact, they were really bad people and she must have been tricked…
Chloe closed her eyes tightly. She didn’t want to think this far. She didn’t want to make them bad guys, but her inner voice kept saying that they were really mean people and that Chloe was a stupid woman who had been tricked…
By comparison, what about Eric?
Even though he had been tormenting her for all this time, those were the words of inferiority that came without recognizing his feelings that it was all love. As soon as he realized his love for her, he properly admitted all his faults and sent an apology to Chloe.
In the meantime, he tried to find a way to save her, and he was trying to save her somehow.
It was completely different from William, in other words, it was incomparable. That was why she felt sorry for Eric once again, and she was upset that she couldn’t get to the meeting place faster.
Gazing through the carriage window, she beheld the relentless downpour of snow. Despite the daylight, the vista ahead appeared gloomy and obscured. Her attention was fixed on the snowflakes as she nervously gnawed on her lips.
“Can’t we go a little faster?”
Chloe said to the coachman.
“Oh, Madam. Even now, we are running dangerously. There will be trouble if we go more here.”
The coachman replied in a loud voice, being hit by snow with his whole body. She sighed but soon agreed to the coachman’s words and calmly lowered her hips.
“Just wait ten minutes. I think that’s enough to get there.”
“…I see.”
Saying so, she took her cold hand and clenched her chin.
Ten minutes…
What should she do during this short and long time?
She inhaled deeply, attempting to steady her nerves though finding little success in doing so. Nonetheless, she acknowledged her transgression for the day—subjecting Eric to the inconvenience of waiting on a snowy day.
‘But…’
Would he really be waiting? Would he have gone back first?
Chloe still couldn’t get rid of her doubts about Eric.
He had shown himself a selfish, unrivaled, cold-blooded shell that didn’t care about other things. So she got the idea that he might have gone back without waiting for her, that he might have gone on to do something else.
Yet, on the one hand, she seemed to wish he had done so.
Yes. Eric wouldn’t be waiting for her. He must have gone somewhere… If so, she needn’t have to so dangerously take the carriage, and as soon as she saw him, she didn’t have to choose what words of apology to say because he wouldn’t be there anyway.
After thinking about it, her mind eased a little.
Unbeknownst to Chloe, her inclination to hold Eric responsible for his perceived unkindness served as a coping mechanism to assuage her own guilt. This lack of self-awareness allowed her to entertain such thoughts, as she remained oblivious to her own selfish and unrivaled personality.
Regardless, the carriage continued its rapid journey and reached the square precisely ten minutes later, as the coachman had promised.
Stepping off the carriage, Chloe’s countenance displayed a noticeable shift towards a more relaxed expression, no longer reflecting the previous nervousness.
In the midst of a fierce blizzard, she instinctively took a step back and furrowed her brow. Even an umbrella was useless in this kind of weather. Even if she used an umbrella, how could she survive when snowflakes pricked her eyes and nose and the wind blew her umbrella over?
Nevertheless, driven by the need to maintain her composure, Chloe resisted the urge to fold her umbrella and hastily seek shelter. She exerted effort to stand tall, battling against the relentless onslaught of the blizzard.
With her gaze fixed on the vast expanse of the open square, she noticed its desolate nature.
Even the street vendors, usually present regardless of weather conditions, were absent on such a dreadful day.
Buffeted by the icy gusts, Chloe experienced a throbbing and numbing sensation in her lungs. In truth, considering her current state, she shouldn’t have ventured outside. Her delicate body was ill-suited to endure the battering winds and the penetrating cold that enveloped her…
Chloe let out a hollow laugh as she scanned the empty square.
…What the hell was she hoping for?
As expected, Eric had gone back. He didn’t come home, so he must have gone to work somewhere…
Chloe shook her head.
Because she felt so sorry for herself for not being able to give up hope again after suffering like that, what did she hope for when she ran through this snow?
Feeling bitter, she turned back. No, she was going to.
“Chloe!”
There was that familiar voice.
No way…
As Chloe gradually shifted her gaze, a sight greeted her—Eric sprinting in her direction, wearing a radiant smile.
However, despite the cheerfulness in his expression, unmistakable signs of exhaustion adorned Eric’s visage. Frozen skin, parched lips, and dark shadows under his eyes revealed the toll of enduring the harsh conditions.
She could feel the distinct chill emanating from him, a testament to his prolonged exposure to the unforgiving weather.
Chloe pursed her lips.
…He really waited for her?
And as soon as he saw her… he came running while smiling so brightly?
Couldn’t understand the situation in the slightest, she hesitated and stepped back while Eric stood close to Chloe.
She thought he would blame her.
Why are you so late? Do you know how long I waited… He might say that, so she closed her eyes, anticipating the shouts she would hear.
But…
“Was it difficult to get there?”
His words were a gentle question.
Confusion etched across Chloe’s face as she gazed at him, yet simultaneously, a wave of shame washed over her. This shame stemmed from her own attempt to rationalize her actions while simultaneously placing blame on him for selfishness.
“Why…”
She opened her mouth with difficulty.
“…Why did you wait?”
Eric looked down at Chloe. There is snow on his shoulders, and his eyebrows are frozen. The blue lips opened slowly.
“I thought you would come.”
“What if…”
Chloe closed her eyes tightly.
“What were you going to do if I didn’t come?”
“I was going to wait for you to come.”
Eric replied as if it was something natural.
“I was going to wait for days and days until you came. Then, I wondered if you would come to see me after a day or so.”
“Eric.”
Chloe bit her lip, still closing her eyes tightly.
“Do you have to go this far?”
She really wanted to ask.
“What am I for you to say and do this? I’m going to die anyway… Now, we are done.”
She really was nothing, merely a fleeting existence destined to perish. Yet, she couldn’t fathom the reasons behind his peculiar behavior.
Chloe couldn’t understand him.
“Didn’t I tell you?”
Eric slowly held her hand, who was still in denial.
“We are not done. With your permission, I can turn it back.”
When she slowly opened her eyes, she could see his transparent blue eyes in front of her.
“And Chloe, you will not die. You can’t die. Because I will save you no matter what.”
Eric’s face was sincere when he said this. Sincerity and confidence. These two things were deeply embedded in him, and Chloe had to avoid his gaze once again.
“Don’t…”
She said, trying to shake off Eric’s hand.
“Don’t give me hope.”
“Chloe.”
“Don’t give me hope that I can live, that I can ever love you properly.”
A blizzard raged. The rushing wind pierced painfully between them. Chloe’s shoulders tremble even more.
“…It will make me want to live longer.”
She muttered as she buried her face in her hands.
“I don’t want to live anymore…”
Unaware of the distinction between expressing a lack of will to live and silently yearning for life, she remained oblivious to this crucial difference. Meanwhile, Eric looked at her pitifully, his chilled and frostbitten hands finding solace in the embrace of her shoulders.
“You have to live.”
Eric repeated it.
“You must live.”
