Chapter 45
“Fay Martin!”
Dylan’s voice reached out before mine. The ferocious horned monster opened its mouth wide.
“Wait!”
I shouted, spreading my arms for the spatial illusion spell.
Time was running out.
In an instant, I felt the drain of magic, and my vision blurred. The mediocre monsters closest to me were caught in the illusion as their movements stiffened along with unpleasant screams. Some stumbled and fell, unable to escape the spell.
Extending my other hand towards the remaining monsters that were not affected by the illusion, thorny vines with sturdy forms shot out in all directions.
Swiftly, like a whip between knights, they headed towards the monsters.
The knights who belatedly noticed quickly dodged aside. The target was the horned monster right in front of Fay.
Twang!
The vines wrapped tightly around the monster’s snout, immobilizing its wide-open mouth and front paws.
The monsters writhed and turned their eyes towards me.
At that moment, I temporarily blinded its eyes while maintaining the spatial illusion. Prioritizing not causing casualties, I unleashed several rarely used abilities simultaneously, causing my mind to grow hazy.
I shouted to the knights closer to the danger.
“Quickly!”
“Flare!”
Flames burst forth from the hands of the fire mage.
Sizzle, whoosh!
The vines entwined with the monsters were ignited. In a matter of seconds, the horned monster turned into a roasted monster and soon transformed into ashes. Fortunately, not a single hair on Fay Martin’s head was harmed.
“Ugh…”
My eyes wandered around, and my tears were on the verge of coming out. Meanwhile, the monsters, affected by the illusion, became slower and stupider, so they were mercilessly cut down.
Thanks to that, a small gap appeared.
As I controlled my breathing and pressed my eyes firmly, my eyes felt warm.
Why did she unnecessarily put herself in danger and step forward without even being able to use the illusion?
If she started with the spatial magic from the beginning, it would have been more convenient for the illusionist to move behind the knights. Even if my eyes were mistaken, it seemed like she deliberately went in front of the monster without being able to use the illusion.
Feeling a fatigue similar to that of a shut-in venturing outside after a long time, I felt a strong desire to hurry back and rest.
Kwoong!
Huh?
Along with the sound of my foot touching the ground, my body suddenly floated up to knee height.
“Hazel!”
I hadn’t noticed that the monster had moved closer to my vicinity while I was saving Fay. The impact created by its massive feet on the ground and the resulting gust of wind caused my body to stagger backward as if being pushed by a typhoon.
Fortunately, I only scraped my buttocks, though I almost got trampled. If I had realized it any later, I might have shown an embarrassing appearance.
“Ouch…”
Besides the pain, everything in front of me was covered in dust.
Oh, by saving someone, I almost got myself killed. Even if I had received extra buffs, I wouldn’t have scraped my buttocks like this! I wasn’t a knight who trained every day and built up physical resilience. How was I supposed to avoid everything?
“Are you okay?”
Dylan swiftly killed one of the monsters and came over to help me up. Meanwhile, the knights were dealing with the remaining large monsters and the mediocre ones.
“Seriously. Hey, you… You should have stopped it quickly!”
I vented my frustration at him for no reason.
“Sorry, sorry.”
“Quickly, deal with that… Wait, what?”
…Huh? I stopped mid-gesture towards the remaining monster. Through the swirling dust, I saw a large black mass that looked like at least five creatures.
“Commander!”
Someone shouted, and the surrounding voices erupted in commotion. I froze in place as my mouth hung open.
Seriously… Was this madness?
Five large monsters emerged through the collapsed wall, with a sixth one still remaining… that was more than dozens of mediocre monsters combined.
In all my previous expeditions, I had never encountered such large creatures all at once. Sure, I had dealt with some on my own, but I expected the other knights to be equally stunned by this unexpected turn of events.
This was completely beyond the original story. What on earth is happening?
Dylan shouted with a stern face.
“Everyone, realign your formation!”
In the meantime, Fay Martin, who regained her composure, stepped back, and the knights quickly readjusted their positions. This was no longer a matter to be taken lightly or joked about. Something was seriously wrong.
As Dylan quickly moved forward, Lux, who had come closer to me while aligning the formation, asked with concern.
“Are you okay?”
Even though my bottom was a bit sore, it wasn’t unbearable. I was more embarrassed by the incident before.
“I’m fine. Just a little embarrassed.”
“Don’t worry. You looked like the goddess of the wind.”
“Hey!”
Lux grinned mischievously.
“Stand behind me for a bit. You used a lot of strength.”
“I used to be better before.”
“Now you’re just an ordinary person. If you weren’t here… anyways, it’s been a while since things got so exciting. What’s going on with this sudden turn of events?”
“That’s what I’m wondering. Just be careful.”
“Yes, sis.”
Lux jokingly responded despite us being same-aged friends and pulled the bowstring with a serious expression.
“Now, it’s time for your big brother to take action.”
Who’s the big brother now? He called me sis, then he’s suddenly older.
I watched Lux’s back as I took a step back.
Thwack!
Two arrows flew with an incredibly strong force and hit the large creature’s eyes precisely, one by one. Hitting the target with a pair of arrows was Lux’s specialty. It was chillingly accurate.
With a screech, the monster thrashed about.
Each time it jumped, chunks of mud resembling human heads fell from its body. It was a truly repulsive creature, not just because of its grotesque appearance resembling a pile of mud but also because of its foul stench.
Lux fired another pair of arrows. Once again, it hit its mark.
As I marveled at Lux’s skills, the knights faltered and started murmuring. I furrowed my brow, understanding why they had stopped moving. The appearance of the newly emerged creature was like something that should never have appeared.
It had the same form as the creatures that should not exist, with a distinct violet gem embedded on its forehead. It was draped in a robe, and its menacing red eyes were visible through the opening. It was the appearance of a follower.
“….”
I was speechless. Lux and Dylan seemed equally stunned.
Oh, what was going on?
Could something really be wrong? Or was it that the world was going to end tomorrow?
That thought crossed my mind. And on top of that, it was absurd that followers appeared twice in one day. I haven’t even confirmed if the one that appeared in the early morning was a real follower.
“This… is the palace, right?”
I asked Lux, looking at the follower controlling the monster from behind.
“…I’m not sure either. What’s happening today? This can’t be because of you, right?”
“Ugh, this popularity of mine.”
Lux chuckled when I retorted.
It wasn’t a laugh meant to enjoy the situation. While laughing, Lux was preparing to shoot the next arrow, and I stood next to him, reading the movements of the knights and timing my next illusion spell.
The tension was thick not only around us but also in the surroundings.
“It’s not a palace, it’s a completely chaotic place. Where is the prince? Hurry, let him know!”
By the way, Dylan said earlier that he had a conversation with the Crown Prince and came back, but I don’t see him anywhere. Wasn’t this the moment when the protagonist was supposed to show up and deal with this splendidly?
Wasn’t that the protagonist’s role?
Anyway, they never showed up when there was something to be done. It was good not to see their faces until now, but now it was clear that the protagonist had to step forward.
“The Crown Prince and Lady Daysworth have already left for the western city walls!”
A shout from another knight was heard somewhere.
I sighed deeply.
There was nothing I could say about going to the scene. There was no choice.
“We’ll handle things here quickly!”
Dylan’s resolute voice seemed to read my mind. The knights intensified their efforts and began to confront the monster.
