Chapter 46
The followers were not only highly intelligent but also controlled the monsters, so I had to take care of them first. It was my first time seeing a follower, so I was a little surprised.
Nevertheless, I had to eliminate them before it became more dangerous. I moved forward towards Lux. Since I had been pushed back earlier, there was some distance between me and the monster now. It was better to get closer if I wanted to bind them without any movement.
The farther the distance and the larger the space, the more magical power was required.
Just as I was trying to bind the monster from their feet, intending to allow the other knights to eliminate them simultaneously, my eyes met with the follower.
The other knights were occupied with dealing with the remaining monster. Even though the distance between the follower and me was almost 100 meters, their red eyes felt vividly present, as if they were right in front of me.
Unconsciously, I found myself staring at them, and my concentration was partially broken.
“Try not to make eye contact with that. There’s a saying that you might get possessed.”
Lux noticed amidst the chaos and said to me.
“Okay.”
I nodded and stepped back, focusing once again to cast the binding spell on the monster’s feet.
The knights swiftly attacked the immobilized monsters. However, I continued to feel the follower’s eyes sticking to me. It was like an unpleasant illusion of spiders crawling all over my body. That was when it happened.
Simultaneously, the movements of the monster abruptly stopped. I had only temporarily bound their feet, and I hadn’t blinded them or launched any attacks yet.
Still, they stopped on their own.
The monsters that were attacking the knights also halted, standing still as if waiting for orders. Soon, the monsters began to slowly retreat, even the low-level ones.
What was going on? Why… were they like this?
The follower’s eyes were still fixed on me. As the remaining monsters started to back off, the knights also began to feel bewildered.
“Now is not the time. Snap out of it!”
Only two large monsters and about twenty low-level ones remained. In response to Dylan’s shout, the knights belatedly regained their composure and mercilessly struck down the remaining monsters.
Dark magic circles appeared beneath the monsters’ feet, and in a matter of seconds, they vanished into the ground as if falling. The follower monster, who had never taken their eyes off me, bowed their head and disappeared.
“….”
“….”
“…What just happened?”
“They’re gone.”
“Damn it! We could’ve killed them all!”
I closed my mouth and looked down at the spot where the monsters vanished, feeling a sense of emptiness.
What was that?
An uncomfortable feeling engulfed my whole body. I couldn’t help but think that the follower had noticed me and ordered the other monsters, even though it was an absurd thought.
Shaking my head anxiously, I quickly turned my gaze towards the other knights. Lux was staring at me intently. He didn’t seem to feel regret or relief about the monsters disappearing. His face seemed to be asking me about what had just happened.
“….”
Unconsciously, I averted my eyes from Lux and looked quickly towards the other knights. I was worried that Lux might be thinking the same thing as me.
I didn’t want to unnecessarily cause misunderstandings. The reason I had such thoughts was because Hazel, the original one, had experienced similar concerns.
Whenever crimes related to dark magic or problems like monsters occurred, the attention would inexplicably focus on her, as if she were involved. And now, among the people gathered in front of me, there were only two who used dark magic, and one of them was almost useless.
It was only natural for the focus to shift towards me.
I didn’t think it would be better to make excuses for something that wasn’t my fault. I thought to myself as the knights continued their lively conversation, surveying the devastated surroundings. I stood there, seemingly unable to move.
That was when Fay rushed over to my side.
“Th-thank you for saving me!”
She exclaimed, bowing deeply with her hands clasped together. The tightly bound hair on her head had become loose. I was about to scold her earlier, but that thought vanished from my mind.
“You don’t have to thank me. Anyone would have done the same. I was just a bit faster.”
I replied.
“Still, if it weren’t for you, I-I would have d-died,” she stammered.
“Yeah, you could have been swallowed by that monster.”
As I responded, Fay’s head dropped.
Yes, it seemed like she deliberately stood in front of it. It seemed like I was overreacting. But we couldn’t afford to let anything dangerous happen.
“If you’re not confident, it’s better not to step forward. Dealing with monsters as a knight is different from the virtual training we had at the academy. Your hasty actions could result in your own death or the death of your comrades.”
“I-I’m sorry.”
Fay’s face turned pale.
“You don’t have to apologize to me or blame yourself. It’s just a reminder that you need more practice,” I reassured her.
“Yes, yes.”
She nodded, her voice trembling.
“You can’t avoid facing your fear of illusions forever. You chose to stay here, didn’t you?”
Fay nodded again, her eyes red.
“I’ll remember it.”
At her answer, I lightly patted her shoulder as she tried to lower herself to the ground, and she bowed repeatedly.
“Go and check if you’re injured.”
I told her, and she hurried off.
While I was still lost in thought, Dylan approached me. I was worried that he might look at me like Lux, with great concern.
Fortunately, that didn’t happen.
“Thanks for today. If it weren’t for you, there could have been casualties. They used the portal unexpectedly.”
“…Yes.”
“Why did they do that? They seemed to be constantly watching something.” Without realizing it, my body tensed up.
“Really?”
“Even though the followers might have some intelligence, I don’t think they would consider monsters as comrades to be saved. We need to look into it. What do you think?”
Dylan’s face was quite serious. That was when a strong arm rested on Dylan’s shoulder.
It was Lux.
“What are you thinking so deeply about? It’s a relief that we’re okay. It could have been a disaster if they had stayed any longer,” Lux said.
“I guess so.”
“But shouldn’t we start by mobilizing troops for the whole capital? We can’t keep sending our guest on dangerous missions, can we?”
“Ah, right. We should do that.”
“First, let’s let the knights take a break and talk among ourselves. We’ll need to report to the higher-ups as well.”
Dylan spoke, nodding, and turned back to the resting knights. After that, only Lux and I remained. There was a brief moment of silence, perhaps because I had glanced at him earlier, slightly concerned.
Thankfully, nothing happened.
“Why are you so gloomy? Is it because it kept looking at you?”
“No, it’s just…”
“It could be an illusion created by the follower. Don’t worry about it. Just think about the fact that if it weren’t for you, several people would have died. Focus on that.”
His words made me feel a little more relieved, and I smiled faintly. Lux’s mouth curled up even more.
“If it were anyone else, I’d be suspicious, but it’s you. Why are they staring at you like that? I guess the time has come for us to see the followers face to face. What’s the world coming to, huh?”
I patted Lux’s arm, amused by his words.
“Thanks for understanding. It just felt awkward when our eyes met for no reason.”
“I’ll forget about it, so you should too. At least no one got hurt because of it.”
“Yes… got it.”
Lux patted my shoulder once more and quickly turned towards the training grounds, saying we should go rest.
I followed his lead, but before fully turning my body, I glanced briefly at the space where the dark magic circle had disappeared.
The uneasiness still lingered.
Nevertheless, I couldn’t afford to chase after the follower, nor did I want to. It seemed like I needed to quickly finish my work in the capital before things got more complicated. I couldn’t let such minor incidents ruin my plans.
