Chapter 44
Even though he had tried to take advantage of Ginger, she didn’t get angry. Instead, she gladly held his hand and spoke.
“Let’s leave this place and go somewhere where nobody knows us, just the two of us.”
“Do you know how slaves are treated outside?”
She replied confidently.
“Who would know if we leave here? And even if they do, it doesn’t matter. Are they going to push us away? They won’t dare to do such a foolish thing, right?”
Ginger Perian was bold.
Despite her mysterious appearance, she had a sharp wit and a lively way of speaking. She was a fascinating woman, and without realizing it, he had fallen in love with her. She willingly held the hand of a slave and led him out, saying that she wouldn’t be able to come for a while to take care of it.
He had no choice but to rely solely on the news she would bring, without any knowledge of the outside world. He had to trust and wait.
Even if she betrayed him, he had decided to trust her and follow her. He just hoped that Ginger wouldn’t be exposed to danger.
As he pondered, curiosity struck him again.
“Oh, what was the name of the person with no right eyebrow… Anyway, be careful of the one with the missing right eyebrow. If you don’t want to leave a big scar on your face, that is.”
The person disappeared, leaving only perplexing words until the end. He wondered who the person who came to find him really was.
Edmond raised his sword, which was placed against the wall. There were nine matches left. He only had to win four of them. After briefly thinking of Ginger, Edmond got up from his seat to stretch his body.
While Dylan was away, I sat in the chair, tapping my feet and passing the time.
Glancing at my desk, it didn’t seem like there was a huge pile of work, although some had accumulated. I wondered if the Crown Prince had been shirking his duties and gallivanting around with Dylan and others after I quit.
‘Fortunately, it doesn’t seem like that’s the case.’
Maybe the words I said when I submitted my resignation had a significant impact on Jed. The words about not overworking the knights.
If he didn’t take them seriously, I was actually considering going all the way to Lily Dayworth to expose everything. When he tore up the resignation letter one by one, I really wanted to grab him by the collar and shake him.
I crossed my arms and sunk deeper into the chair.
Although it was unintentional, things had progressed. Lily was prevented from being kidnapped by Kairos…
‘No, that’s not all. It’s like severing the relationship between Jed and Lily with Kairos.’
Kairos’ actions in the original story were not limited to just kidnapping. There were times when he had Lily with him.
‘But was the reason for that… clearly explained?’
I don’t think so.
In my memory, Kairos didn’t seem to love Lily Dayworth throughout the original story. Even if it were acting as a person and a human being, if he truly loved her, he would have shown some kind of warm, albeit faint, reaction.
He didn’t cherish her even though she was by his side, nor did he show any affection.
What was it? Why did he insist on keeping Lily by his side?
He was confronted about that by Jed as well. She was rather annoying, and if she hadn’t been there, he wouldn’t have had to confront him. There was a distinct passage that remained in my memory where he clearly expressed his desire to keep Lily by his side.
Unlike me, the short-lived extra, Lily possessed a power of purification due to her innate abilities. Currently, it was a small power, but as she stayed by Jed’s side, her strength would gradually grow, eventually reaching a level close to that of a saint.
However, there was no mention of Kairos needing her powers. It didn’t make sense for someone who used dark magic to require Lily’s powers.
‘Or… what if I just didn’t sense it at all? What if he was actually interested in Lily?’
Memories of Lily’s bright laughter came to mind, followed by Noah’s affectionate face.
“Hmm… a bit annoying…”
I murmured to myself. However, I suddenly realized that my mood was rapidly plummeting.
Thud!
The door which was opened sounded like a thunderous cry, and Dylan burst into the room.
“Hey, Hazel!”
Startled by the sudden noise and Dylan’s shout, I quickly stood up.
“Ah, you scared me. What’s wrong? What’s going on?”
The thoughts that had been clouding my mind vanished. Did something collapse, or what? Dylan’s face was tense and rigid.
“A monster has appeared near the back gate portal.”
“Wait, what… what did you say?”
My surprised expression mirrored Dylan’s.
If it was near the back gate, it was a nearby location that would take about twenty minutes to walk from the Knights’ training grounds. If it was a gate portal, it meant it was inside the palace. So, unless he was crazy, a monster had appeared inside the palace.
“A monster has appeared near the back gate portal. Can you help right now? I won’t force you to join since you’re a civilian. However…”
“What are you waiting for? Let’s go quickly.”
There was no time to think. I immediately rose to my feet, determined to follow Dylan.
I couldn’t leave this task to Fay Martin. It was better for me to go and help a little than for anyone else to get hurt. As he nodded with a relieved expression and handed me a sword, I took the sword with a trembling face.
“Just in case.”
“It’s okay if it breaks, right?”
“Even if you chew on it, it’s fine. Your sword is in the Prince’s office.”
“Tell them to bring it here.” I let out a short laugh, and Dylan grabbed another sword.
We quickly ran towards the back gate.
“By the way, what about the protective barrier?”
“The gate portal area only has a single layer of protection. You know we can’t unlock the barrier every time we use the portal. But of all places, it had to be there.”
“Are you sure it’s really a monster? It broke through the western wall in the morning, so how can it appear in the capital again within a few hours? Could it be the same monster from earlier?”
We continued to converse without slowing down.
“No, it’s different from the reported monster in appearance. We’ve sent some of our men to search the western walls, so we’ll receive a report soon.”
“And here?”
“The Second Knights’ Order and the remaining members will handle it. We’re too busy dividing our forces between the Emperor’s Palace and the Empress’ Palace. However, with you here, I’m confident we can handle it on our own.”
I narrowed my eyes immediately.
“Are you kidding me? What the hell is going on?”
“I was discussing damage control with His Highness the Crown Prince, and all of a sudden, I heard the barriers being torn apart.”
“Are there any casualties?”
“No, we’re currently engaged in battle.”
Dylan and I continued to run without slowing down.
Boom!
Suddenly, I felt a vibration on the ground, as if someone was setting up a magic barrier nearby. It was a signal that someone was creating a protective barrier.
“D*mn, this is… I feel like I’m going to die.”
“You haven’t been exercising, have you?”
“I have things to do, you know. D*mn, this… I never intended to come here.”
I held the sword tightly and leaned on my knees, catching my breath.
Dylan seemed fine while I was panting and struggling to catch my breath. I decided to send him ahead and take a moment to rest before running again. After a while, I could see black smoke and the figures of monsters coming into view.
They had broken through the barrier that connected to the outer walls.
“This can’t be real.”
Dylan wouldn’t lie, but still, monsters inside the palace? It felt like a nightmare.
The knights who had already gathered were taking care of the horde of low-level monsters, pushing them back from all directions.
There were even three massive monster!
One was a horned wolf-like creature on each side, while two was similar to the buffalo I had seen in Ferrarium, they were wreaking havoc within the palace.
With the knights responding to the call and gathering in large numbers, there were quite a few people present.
Honestly, there were enough knights here that they could handle it even if I were absent.
Assessing the situation, I concluded that I could just add some obstacles for the monsters and make my escape, and they would be able to handle the rest. As soon as I finished calculating, I went over to Dylan and placed both hands on the ground, preparing to unleash my summoning magic…
“Aaaah!”
However, a sharp scream made my head turn involuntarily.
The knight with lemon-colored hair, Fay, stumbled back and let out a scream as a horned monster approached, dripping black saliva. The distance between them was about fifty meters. If the horned monster made a sudden leap, Fay could be devoured in an instant.
This was insane! No, why was it behaving like that?!
