Chapter 41
The next day, after meeting Edmond and returning, I headed to the palace again. I was relieved because I had told Edmond what to do yesterday, and he would surely follow my instructions.
Fortunately, on the way back, I only encountered three employees, so I was able to leave without any major issues. After the conversations with Edmond, I struggled quite a bit to open the heavy door that was firmly closed.
And as soon as I returned to the hotel, I fell asleep as if I had passed out.
In fact, seeing Edmond in person, it seemed like he was even more worried about Ginger than I had thought, which put my mind at ease.
Initially, I thought the conversation wouldn’t go well because I believed Edmond was approaching Ginger for his own purposes. When someone you had to deceive disappeared, their true nature would come out. So, I thought Ginger liked Edmond more for now, though it was my mistake.
Edmond’s mind seemed to be filled with concern for Ginger, even more so than Ginger herself. It seemed like everyone in this world except me was experiencing sincere and innocent love.
It was not fair that only I was tormented by the gods.
D*mn this world!
Feeling gloomy for no reason, I vented my frustration to the empty air.
‘It’s definitely more comfortable when I’m alone.’
Inside the carriage heading to the palace, I leisurely looked out the window. Nigella, who had diligently followed me to the palace yesterday, must have judged that today was not a situation where she needed to be suspicious or anything, as she willingly stepped back when I said I would go alone.
She did cause a ruckus by insisting on me having breakfast, though. In addition, she surprised me several times by interrupting conversations I had with Dylan.
It was the first time I saw Nigella’s scary gaze. Despite being a person from Kairos, she seemed incredibly gentle.
Anyway, if Fay Martin could provide a bit more information, I could train her enough to finish this whole thing. Unlike Dylan and the knights, who were troubled, it shouldn’t have taken a long time, which was fortunate.
After all, even if the mages knew about dark magic, most of them considered illusion as an unknown area. While it worried me a bit that there were signs of emotional and physical abuse in Fay Martin, it didn’t seem like something I should interfere with.
There were some inconsistencies, though…
‘If it bothers me, I should only discuss it with Dylan.’
As the hectic pace slowly winded down, another nervousness set in. Now, it was time for the real test: our contact had been cut off for a while, and it all came down to whether Noah would make a move himself and whether I would take action.
Depending on that, I needed to plan my escape more securely.
Even though I wasn’t really running away, my palms were sweaty as if I were leaving his embrace. I wasn’t worried about his subordinates coming after me, no matter how many there were.
‘Failure is not an option.’
I had to prepare for success without a doubt. Besides Annie and the preparations underway, what else would be needed to ensure that he couldn’t find me again? Until I arrived at the palace, my mind was consumed with that thought, leaving no room for any other thoughts.
When I arrived at the palace, Dylan was there to greet me.
“Where’s Fay?”
I asked as I stepped out of the carriage, receiving his escort.
“She’s been practicing since dawn. She’s sweating and working hard to show it to you.”
“Really?”
Dylan seemed excited. It was surprising to see him so lively right after meeting him.
“It’s amazing. Normally, if I ask her to do something, she screams, curls up in a corner, and cries for over an hour. Wait, an hour? There have been times when she cried for three hours instead.”
“Yes.”
I guessed that was just how she was.
If she were an ordinary knight, I would have told her to pack up and go home by now. Though considering that she joined the First Knight Order, her family’s influence must be quite significant. Or maybe the reception for the mages has improved more than I thought?
“The knights have given up on her, but I didn’t expect her to change like this. It would be great if you could just provide some support until the next subjugation. Anyway, you’re my patron, my patron. I’ll do whatever you ask!”
“Well… I’ll find out once I see her today. Though more than that, if you keep saying that, you’ll ruin your Deputy Commander’s dignity, you know?”
“Well, what if it damages his dignity a bit?”
“You’re quite cheeky.”
I didn’t know at first because he never mentioned it, but Dylan had become the Deputy Commander while I was away, and I only found out after Lux told me. He was definitely an eccentric guy.
Soon, the interior of the training ground gradually came into view.
“Ahhh!”
Now, I chuckled at the familiar scream.
“… She’s working hard, right?”
I walked towards Dylan, squinting my eyes.
“She doesn’t give up and cry now. Although it would be much better if that scream disappeared…”
“I can’t do anything about that either.”
I shrugged and gestured towards where Fay was.
“You still haven’t told the crown prince what time I’ll be here today, have you?”
“I’m really trying to avoid you seeing him as much as possible. I’m calling you at his busiest time on purpose, and you’re not going to see him today, either. He’s stuck in meetings, in the office, doing work.”
“We can’t run into each other, so make sure you timed it perfectly. The moment we meet, I’ll be…”
I interrupted his words and drew my finger across my throat horizontally, with the most severe expression I could muster.
Training has resumed. Just like before, the area was bustling with knights who would come to watch whenever I trained with Fay. Even though I had kicked them out yesterday because I couldn’t concentrate, they swarmed around as if nothing had happened.
They even brought some strange banners from somewhere and waved them like cheerleaders.
‘It feels like I’ve become a monkey in a zoo.’
Since I didn’t have time to get annoyed today, I decided to give up and focus on training Fay.
“Fay, try using the illusion spell on me. You can even attack if you want.”
I signaled her while facing her. Her face turned pale.
“H-How can I cast an illusion spell on you, my esteemed senior…! I absolutely can’t do it. What if I hurt you…!”
“Hurt me…?”
I turned my head helplessly towards Dylan. Dylan, dressed comfortably today with a nonchalant expression, was watching us from the side. He had a smug look on his face.
“Hey, do you know what that means?”
“What?”
“It’s like bragging about your meager salary in front of the Emperor. Stop talking nonsense and do as she instructed.”
Fay bowed her head deeply at Dylan’s words. Her ears turned bright red between the lemon-colored hair tied on both sides.
“Yes…”
When I gestured, she seemed to have made up her mind and put on a determined expression.
“U-Um, if you feel any pain or fear, p-please raise your right hand!”
“…Okay.”
I replied hesitantly.
“You mustn’t hold back for my sake!”
“Alright, alright, let’s get started quickly.”
Time was passing by.
“I-I really have to do it?”
“This is the second time I’m saying this, but it’s the last chance.”
Fay’s face turned even redder. I stared intently into her eyes, trying to make it easier for her to cast the spell. However, my vision started to blur.
That was when it happened.
“Deputy Commander! Deputy Commander! Something big has happened!”
The sound of hurried footsteps in the distance drew closer, and a knight came running towards us in a frenzy.
