Chapter 40
I unclasped the necklace from my neck that I had prepared and presented it to Edmond. It was a strange piece—a contorted gold coin with a meticulously drilled hole—transformed into a necklace. Edmond’s gaze immediately fixated upon it, his eyes subtly widening as he recognized it.
Ginger was right.
“Ginger.”
“Yes?”
“When we get to the capital, I’m going to meet your lover.”
“Edmond?”
“Yes. He needs to know about our plan, too. You should give him the strength to endure while he’s there.”
“Oh… I didn’t even think about that.”
“I’ll tell you the details when I come back safely. Can you give something that can confirm that you sent me?”
“Something to confirm… Ah! Here. If it’s this, Edmond will recognize it immediately. He made it himself.”
“She said you made it from something she threw over the ring when you won your first match?”
Edmond nodded, stepping back ever so slightly, and his gaze also remained vigilant. Well, I guessed one could think that I stole the necklace. Ginger seemed to know Edmond quite well, more than I expected.
“But if he still remains cautious around you… Well, this is a bit awkward.”
“What is it?”
“I’m worried about him falling for you just by looking at you… If you let him know about this…”
“Are you joking? I’m not interested in your lover.”
“No, Boss, it’s not like that. I mean, I know how high my fake boss’, the Duke’s standards are.”
“So, what’s the problem?”
“Edmond said I’m the most beautiful woman he has ever seen!”
“Yes, Edmond will continue to see only you as beautiful from now on, so don’t worry. You and Edmond will only have eyes for each other.”
“Boss, do you know anything else? You know a lot about me as well!”
“Ginger, say it quickly.”
After I said that, Ginger handed me the necklace and showed me how to confirm my identity to Edmond.
“She said if you’re still like this, I should say ‘May the blessings of Nux (the undefeated god) be with you’ and hold both of your hands, checking your condition.”
Was that it?
Originally, Ginger would hold both of his hands, briefly touching his forehead, and then let go, but no matter how I looked at it, it seemed odd for me to do it. I left out a part of the sentence, hoping he would get the idea.
He flinched, took a step back, and nodded.
“No, I won’t hold your hand… I trust you now. Did something happen to Ginger?”
It sounded like their own secret code.
Just by looking at Edmond’s expression, I could tell instantly. It was as if he had received Ginger’s confession.
Although I thought it was just a code or something they say all the time, the look on Edmond’s face revealed everything. Checking his condition might be equivalent to saying ‘I love you’ to Edmond. Their relationship must have been incredibly secretive and clandestine within this context.
Regardless, just from the change in his tone, I almost burst out laughing.
“No, Ginger is fine. She’s at Ferrarium right now.”
“At Ferrarium…? Ah, so…”
“You were worried because she didn’t come, right? I thought you know to some extent.”
Edmond nodded his head.
“She just said it would be difficult for her to come soon.”
After grabbing the necklace, Edmond spoke obediently.
“Ginger is doing well. She went to Ferrarium temporarily for work on orders. Maybe a few months? She couldn’t move right away, so I came instead.”
“Ginger said she has no friends.”
“Well, that’s not entirely wrong. To call it friendship…”
“Then, who are you?”
“Well, a master-servant relationship is a bit… Let’s say I’m a collaborator.”
When I told him that she might not come for a few months, his expression sank a little lower.
“I see. Is she really doing well without any problems? If that’s the case, then it’s fine.”
“Don’t worry about that. More importantly, I don’t have much time. So, I’ll just say what I need to say and leave.”
“Okay.”
“Do you know that Ginger is trying to take you out of here?”
He nodded with a dark expression.
“I’m fine, so please don’t let her do anything dangerous.”
I let out a low sigh at his words.
Edmond must also want to leave this place desperately. He didn’t come here by choice. I don’t know much about his past, but at least from Ginger’s perspective, it seemed that way. Moreover, after meeting Ginger Perian, he would have wanted to stay here even less.
“Don’t worry about that. Just listen carefully from now on.”
For now, it was important that he didn’t fall into someone else’s hands until we could leave here. We needed to buy time until both of our disguises were ready. It was crucial that he didn’t fall into the wrong hands, even if it meant paying a higher price.
He had only been here for a few months now, so he’s not on Kairos’ radar even if he’s in first place. However, it would be troublesome if he continued to win and became the main money earner here.
In the original story, Lily had a hard time taking out Edmond.
It was because Edmond had raised his value tremendously to stay by Ginger’s side. He was saved by the Crown Prince and his lover, something no ordinary person would ever dream of doing. But what if Kairos found out that I had stolen Edmond, who had a high value?
If that happened, I would be in more danger!
Despite the fact that I would like to take Edmond out and hide him right now, a suspicious action could make it impossible for me to escape. I didn’t have the backing of a crown prince like Lily, so I needed to pull this off at the perfect moment, once and for all.
“Who are you competing against today? Do you know their names?”
Edmond tilted his head and spoke.
“The match hasn’t been decided yet.”
Upon hearing his words, I glanced around.
“At most, there are only two people, right? You already know who you will compete against.”
“…Do you know that much?”
Here, the nobles’ money could do so much, and he didn’t know even that.
“Tell me quickly. There are things I need to confirm.”
“It’s Zen and Matisse.”
Zen and Matisse… Good.
I snapped my fingers and gestured for Edmond to come closer.
As he lowered his head, I quickly whispered and stepped back. I could feel Edmond tensing up and getting nervous. Maybe he was lost in thought, contemplating my words.
“Can you do as I said?”
I asked after giving him a moment.
Edmond stood up, his face much more serious than before.
“Is it really enough if I just do that?”
“For now. Later, I will come by myself or send someone from my side. Until then, act as usual without others noticing anything. Today’s events never happened.”
“…Okay.”
“Just in case, never, never fight with the employee or other gladiators to create trouble. It will put Ginger in a difficult situation, you know that, right? I’m asking you.”
“Yes, I understand.”
After a brief conversation, I was about to turn around and leave when Edmond grabbed my arm. It didn’t hurt, but it was sudden, so I turned my head and raised an eyebrow.
“Are you leaving?”
“Do you have something to say to Ginger? Should I pass on a message?”
“…Please tell her not to get hurt.”
I thought he had something else to say. I smiled faintly and nodded.
“Alright. I’ll make sure to convey your well wishes. Good luck.”
With that, I immediately left Edmond’s waiting room.
