Chapter 42
Chapter 6. The Eye of the Follower.
As the gaze of everyone around me, including mine, was fixed on the knight, Fay, who had been preparing to attack me, froze in place.
“What’s going on?”
Dylan, who had suddenly gotten up, approached the knight and asked.
Who caused an accident somewhere? Otherwise, he wouldn’t come running like that.
While I also turned towards Dylan, the other knights didn’t seem particularly surprised. They seemed to think it was either not very important or an exciting issue. One of the knights even stretched lazily, saying, “What’s going on again?”
“What happened?”
When he asked again, the man took a deep breath and quickly answered.
“The outer walls of the Elkard Western Gate were destroyed last night.”
Hearing this from the side, I furrowed my brows.
Huh? Why did that happen? Why would the outer walls of the capital collapse?
That was a much bigger problem than I expected. The walls of the territory were the basic defense mechanism to protect the city from wars and monsters. Since the walls of the capital were especially high and sturdy, they rarely collapsed, and they shouldn’t have collapsed.
The capital was where the emperor resided. The fact that the strongest walls had collapsed meant that there was a big problem.
There were a total of four entrances to Elkard: the East Gate, West Gate, South Gate, and North Gate. Elkard was located in the center of the empire, so many people entered through each gate without any bias. Traders, travelers, and even ordinary people passed through it.
Even if it collapsed in the early morning, there was a possibility of many casualties.
There wouldn’t be such a quiet war, so it was probably an attack by monsters. If monsters capable of breaking the walls came, there would have been at least a medium-sized group. It must not have been just one.
Moreover, the Western Gate was a double wall, so it was even more worrying that it had collapsed.
Among the four gates, the Western Gate had already collapsed once due to a large-scale monster attack. After that, people who were enveloped in anxiety built a new, sturdy wall and made it double-layered.
If it was not another wall but that double wall that had collapsed… how long would it take for them to walk from the Western Gate to the palace? Even though I knew from various sources that there had been an increase in monsters, I never thought I would experience it firsthand so soon.
“What about the damage?”
Without realizing it, I asked the question first.
The knight looked surprised and alternated his gaze between Dylan and me. Dylan nodded, and the man greeted me with a bow.
“We are currently in the process of recovery, so we are still receiving accurate reports on the damage.”
“Report what you have so far.”
Dylan replied.
“Yes! About a quarter of the stone wall has collapsed, and the gatehouse has also collapsed. It has been reported that four carriages entering the capital were buried under the rubble. There are about twenty casualties, including the guards who were guarding the entrance, and their condition doesn’t seem good.”
“…Four carriages buried under the rubble?” I asked, and the knight’s expression became even darker. He seemed to be filled with a sense of desolation.
“They were carrying goods and were lined up, but it seems like they were buried under the rubble. They were identified as traders.”
“Why did the walls collapse? Monster attack?”
I already considered it the work of monsters.
“Yes, there was a monster attack.”
“So, where are they now? Have they infiltrated?”
“We haven’t found any traces of its entry. According to the witnesses, it disappeared like dust. We need to investigate that part further. But…”
The knight hesitated for a moment, then leaned closer to Dylan and spoke in a low voice that only he couldn’t hear.
It was so faint that the other knights wouldn’t have heard it either. Dylan’s expression remained stern, and his face hardened.
I wondered what he said to make his expression like that.
“First, you go and continue to assess the situation. I need to see the Crown Prince. Kevin! You go to another training ground right away and confirm if they’re also assessing the situation! Inform the second and third battalions first, and if the commanders are present, tell them to come to the first battalion conference room. If they’re not there, tell the deputy commanders to come. We only needed to tell the other battalions for now!”
“Ah, yes! Yes, understood!”
As Dylan shouted, Kevin, who had been moving leisurely, suddenly exerted force and quickly darted towards the other training ground.
“What about me?”
The puzzled face of Fay asked, belatedly giving a salute before hurrying to follow Kevin.
“Yes, sir! If there’s any additional situation report, I’ll send it here immediately!”
Seeing the knight who reported the news also saluted, bowed his head and quickly ran off, I grabbed Dylan’s arm in a hurry.
“Why? Why is your expression like that? Were there too many of them?”
“There was a pile of them.”
“I don’t think you’d make that look for that reason alone.”
Although he smiled briefly, the smile didn’t last long and quickly turned into a stern face. His head turned quickly as he was busy giving orders, scanning the surroundings.
“You’re observant. It seems like there might be followers involved. Someone claimed to have seen a purple gemstone embedded in one of the monsters.”
Dylan’s voice gradually became quieter, and in the end, I was also so surprised that my jaw dropped involuntarily.
“…Followers have appeared?”
Follower monsters weren’t ordinary monsters. They were high-ranking monsters with tremendous destructive power. The problem was that followers have intelligence and, depending on their type, possess intelligence comparable to humans. That meant they could control other monsters and cause trouble.
“We need to confirm it. Considering that it was seen in the early morning, it’s likely to be a mistaken sighting. But if there are followers involved, it will be troublesome.”
“More than that, if it was a follower, there’s no guarantee that it hasn’t entered the capital, and if it were using teleportation, that would be a headache. They must not have made it all the way to the center since we haven’t gotten any other reports yet…”
“Yes, you’re right. We’ll just have to hope they didn’t make it in before we can track them down. The rest of us will be on standby, go! And Lux, you go get the tracker.”
“Yes!”
“Really, there’s never a good day for this.”
Dylan muttered under his breath, rubbing his neck. Then, he patted my shoulder.
“Hey, Hazel.”
“Yes?”
“I’m sorry for telling you bad news as soon as you arrived.”
I shrugged.
“Why are you sorry? It’s not like you caused it.”
“Just stay here for a moment. You can stay in my office if you want. I’ll go see the Crown Prince. I’ll confirm everything and come back for sure.”
Dylan seemed to be trying his best to make me feel at ease.
The danger of follower monsters, above all, was that they were monsters who wished to follow their masters, monsters who wished to follow and resurrect the final villain. The final villain, described in the original, was the embodiment of evil and could be called a demon king in my terms.
“…Alright.”
Dylan quickly moved after delivering the news and giving orders to the other knights. In an instant, the surroundings became empty. He moved so quickly that only a cloud of dust remained.
“Phew.”
Despite Dylan’s words not to worry, I was extremely worried.
Why did followers appear just when I was here? I couldn’t just disappear while casualties were occurring.
Unlike most monsters that simply act according to instinct, they move in order to gather sacrifices. They were beings who gathered strength so that their master could resurrect in this world. It was obvious what kind of sacrifice they needed on Earth.
It was…
