Chapter 39
Outside, it had gotten so deserted that I’d have to look hard to find anyone, but not here. I tugged at the door’s metal latch.
“Ouch, heavy.”
I could easily make it to the employee-only area by walking through the gate. However, this huge door required physical strength rather than a special skill.
Struggling to open it with both hands, I barely managed to squeeze in and close the door behind me.
As I entered, I could hear the excited voices of the people. The scent of the arena and the sound of swords clashing could be felt even in the hallway.
The fights in the arena had already begun, but there was no problem. Edmond was one of the top two slaves who had the ability to compete, so he would probably show up last. He would most likely be waiting until then.
He was just like a promising star in the Colosseum. They said that the top-ranked slaves were treated differently, with their own waiting rooms and even a doctor on standby in case of injuries.
Some even said that the top-ranked slaves purposely let some of their opponents win in order to maintain balance and not cause too much damage to each other. After all, it was better to receive better treatment together rather than being stuck as a slave and constantly trying to survive in Colosseum.
These skilled fighters who aimed their swords at each other were causing a lot of damage to the Colosseum when they fought.
On the other hand, some said that they were treated differently in order to increase their competitive spirit. Anyway, the important thing now was to quickly find Edmond’s private waiting room and get rid of anyone guarding it.
I glanced around the empty hallway.
Both sides were open, and I could see the corners. It would have been better if I knew what was inside. So now, I had to find my way to Edmond on my own.
Which way should I go? Left or right?
“Let’s see…”
I was about to choose when an employee appeared from the right side.
“Oh! Over here!”
I waved my hand at the employee, wanting to catch his attention.
“Outsiders are not allowed here. If you’re a customer, please enter through the main gate.”
As soon as I saw the hostile look on the employee’s face, I smiled and greeted him.
“Hello.”
“What is it now? Please leave.”
“I’m your boss, James.”
I gazed straight into the employee’s eyes and spoke firmly.
“…Nice to meet you, Mr. James.”
The employee’s eyes became hazy due to my spell, and he politely bowed. James was a common name, so there was probably at least one James here.
“Nice to meet you. I’m looking for Edmond. Where’s his waiting room? Is he participating today?”
“Yes, you can come this way.”
“Thanks. Let’s try to find a time when there are no people and go. It’s too tiring to keep using my powers.”
“Yes, I understand.”
The enchanted employee started to guide me to where Edmond was.
“What’s your name?”
“I’m Seth.”
“Okay, Seth.”
Even though it was so easy to use my powers, I shouldn’t get too caught up in this fun. After all, it was black magic, so everything must be done in moderation.
I hummed along as I followed Seth to the personal waiting room. Although I met two employees, I easily passed through with the same method as Seth.
“Here we are.”
Finally, we arrived at the personal waiting room.
“….”
I was speechless when I saw the large door, wrapped in chains and secured with three locks. It felt more like a prison than a waiting room. Of course, it was clear that the employees were managing the gladiators and preventing them from escaping, but it still gave off an uncomfortable feeling.
Seth skillfully opened the three locks and unwrapped the chains, then stepped aside as if telling me to enter.
“Okay, you wait here. If your colleagues come to take Edmond, tell them that I am adjusting his condition, and you will take him when the time comes, got it?”
“Yes.”
Seth nodded with hazy eyes, and I went inside.
There was another door inside.
Fortunately, it wasn’t a locked door, just a regular one. Before going in, I knocked on the door. I listened closely for any sounds from inside.
“Yes.”
It was a deep voice. Since he wasn’t at the door, I could enter without any problems.
“I’ll come in.”
Even as I opened the door, there was no response from inside.
I quietly stepped inside and saw Edmond sitting on a makeshift bed, with his elbows resting on his knees and his head bowed.
“Edmond?”
He belatedly lifted his head at my call. He had almost shaved silver hair, a slightly droopy face, and a much gentler face than I had expected. His warm brown eyes also made him seem kind. If his eyes had been a colder color, he might have looked scary.
I thought he would have a face that was beaten up or scary with a sword in his hand, but that wasn’t the case.
“Hmmm.”
It was clear that Ginger likes gentle men like me. But enough of that.
“….”
However, the part that caught my attention more than his face was his body.
He had taken off his top, revealing his dark skin. It was densely packed with what appeared to be stab wounds. There were so many scars that the areas without them seemed scarce. Even the best gladiator cannot fight with a sword every day and expect their bodies to remain unscathed.
The original story mentions how Ginger always felt heartache whenever he saw Edmond’s scars. If I were her, I’d also be heartbroken to see someone I loved so much that I’d risk my life to save them.
“You seem like a new employee.”
Edmond stared at me, dumbfounded.
“Well, not exactly…”
“Then?”
“I came at Ginger’s request.”
At that moment, Edmond stood up abruptly. Oh, it was a surprise. He was about a head taller than me and looked imposing. However, despite his bigger stature compared to Noah’s, there was no sense of threat.
After all, during their time in the knight order, everyone was physically strong and wore armor, so I was used to seeing such bodies.
“Ginger?”
I nodded, and Edmond approached me with big strides.
Suddenly, his large hand grabbed my throat.
“Ugh.”
“What happened to Ginger?”
I realized that I should have explained beforehand.
Oh, right.
He didn’t know me at all, so it was a bit reckless for me to barge in like that. Ginger was aware of this, but we couldn’t communicate telepathically. And Edmond hadn’t been enchanted either. If I enchanted him now, he would calm down, but I didn’t want to do that.
“Hey, can you let go of my throat first? I came here because I wanted to talk to you. I don’t want to struggle.”
It wasn’t suffocating, but because he had grabbed my neck threateningly, I coughed as I spoke. Edmond examined my face closely and tilted his head.
The next moment, he suddenly let go of my neck as if he had made a decision.
“How do I believe that you came at Ginger’s request?”
“Oh, she said you would understand.”
