Chapter 79
“Is that so…”
“Isilis, you lack confidence in yourself too much. There’s no need for you to feel inferior now, especially when there is no Empress like you.”
“Feeling inferior? There’s no way I would have such a thing.”
Faylos chuckled at her words.
“I know, but saying that…”
“I see you’re having a secret talk without me.”
Suddenly seeing Berthas, she dispelled the soundproofing spell. Since he had entered silently, it seemed he had managed to evade the guards.
“Welcome.”
“Why do you keep arguing with Isilis all the time?”
“Why, are you jealous?”
Even though he replied playfully, Berthas’ sharp gaze did not waver. As Faylos brushed it off casually and chuckled, Berthas, with a somewhat uneven tone, said to Isilis.
“I don’t like how close you are with your cousin.”
“Why, are you jealous?”
“Yes, I’m jealous. Jealous of everything that catches your eye.”
“Even our child?”
“…Except for our daughter.”
While Faylos looked at Berthas with a bewildered face at his words, Isilis couldn’t help but burst into laughter. Without hiding her smile, she whispered to him.
“I get jealous of your gaze, too.”
Upon hearing her words, Faylos’s eyes widened in slight astonishment. Isilis, looking at him out of the corner of her eye, smiled brightly. Without saying anything to her cousin, who didn’t say anything, fearing if he had heard correctly, she gestured to Berthas.
As he approached immediately at Isilis’ gesture, he pressed his lips to the back of her hand. She almost flinched from the warmth of his touch but managed to contain herself.
Smiling faintly into his spark-filled eyes, she spoke.
“Berthas, we’re in the middle of an important conversation between cousins. Would you mind leaving?”
“I want to know everything about you.”
“Sometimes, it’s best to pretend you don’t know.”
“If that’s what you want.”
Faylos looked at Berthas with irritated eyes as he swiftly approached and kissed Isilis’ hair.
“Leave me out of this.”
With those words, Faylos left, and Berthas watched him with a glint in his eyes.
“You, are you going to let your cousin escape?”
“Leave him be.”
“Is your business for today finished?”
“There are still some documents to review, but I have time for you.”
“It’s an honor, Your Majesty.”
Isilis, with a bright smile, raised her hand to Berthas as he bowed. Holding hands, they gracefully exited the audience room. The servants and ladies-in-waiting bowed as they passed.
While walking, Berthas whispered to Isilis.
“Isilis, have you seen the child recently?”
“Of course.”
“Her hair is gradually turning redder.”
“I’m aware of that.”
As the child’s magic manifested, her hair was gradually turning red. Among the nobility, hair always turned red when magic was manifested. While there were exceptions, it was a natural progression for hair to become redder with stronger magic.
Indeed, her own hair was burning red.
‘Father’s hair was red, too.”
She pondered over the documents Faylos had given her. She heard Berthas saying something, but she brushed it off casually.
“Isilis!”
His voice calling her snapped her back to attention.
“What did you say?”
“You seem lost in thought lately.”
“As an empress, it’s natural.”
“I’m a regent, but my mind is still full of you.”
“You’re a bad regent.”
Although Berthas laughed at her words and his slight smile made Isilis raise an eyebrow, he quickly adjusted his expression. She did not like the way he concealed her true feelings.
‘What else doesn’t please you?’
After a moment of hesitation, she spoke again.
“If there’s something that doesn’t please you, you can tell me.”
“It’s just that I always feel drawn to you.”
“Drawn to me?”
Berthas, who had been catching his breath for a moment, looked into Isilis’s face.
“My mind is always filled with you, Isilis. It saddens me that it’s not the same for you. But I must be cautious about expressing my feelings like this, as you are too high up. And I don’t want to trouble you with my dissatisfaction.”
“….”
“Becoming Hillenton’s regent, having our child as the Emperor, it was all for one reason. To stand by your side.”
“Berthas.”
“So, will you finally look at me now? Isilis, I’m always following you.”
His heartfelt words left Isilis speechless.
She was starting to feel sorry now. His affection for her was so great that it almost overshadowed the little affection she could give in return. It was the first time she felt resentment about her position as an Empress.
“If I were just an ordinary person, I would have never had the chance to meet you.”
“I’m grateful for that. If you hadn’t come out to the port under the noble’s pressure, I wouldn’t have had any chance at all.”
“….”
In the past, she might have casually told him that he should understand because she was the Empress. However, now, she couldn’t say such words to him anymore. She had seen through her parents how dangerous a one-sided relationship, built on one person’s sacrifices, could be.
Berthas, who had been smiling at her silence, finally spoke.
“But now, I love even that side of you.”
“Berthas.”
Isilis stopped walking as her steps faltered. Berthas stopped, too. In the whirlpool of overwhelming emotions, Isilis had no choice but to find her eyes welling up with tears. The day was bright, and many people were still watching them in the garden.
He gently embraced her, covering her face, and kissed the top of her head.
“Such a sight, I asked you to only show me in bed.”
Berthas.”
“To hear my name coming from your lips is nice, but it would be even better on the bed.”
With a playful jest, he drew her into his embrace. His wide chest and arms held her gently but firmly. She appreciated his silence, the way he held her without saying anything. In the pounding of his heart, she could sense his unspoken words.
I love you, so please think about me as much as I do about you.
Feeling a hint of bitterness for not fully reciprocating his feelings, Isilis lifted her head.
As if understanding what was on her mind, he leaned in and gently placed his lips near her ear.
“Don’t think about anything, Isilis. I’ll accept everything.”
“Though it feels like you’re making too many sacrifices…”
“Shh, what a sacrifice. By showing this vulnerable side of me to you, I fulfilled my desires. If I do this, you’ll never leave me, will you?”
She chuckled softly in response to his playful words. Even though they sounded like jokes, she understood the sincerity behind them.
“If I can get the Empress of Larchen this way, it would truly be amazing.”
As she gazed at his face, illuminated by the sunlight, she leaned in and placed a gentle kiss on his lips. Berthas seemed momentarily surprised, but then he smiled even brighter, embracing her.
They both felt truly happy at that moment.
