Chapter 80
Berthas increasingly liked Isilis’s changing attitude. She, whom he loved, was also an Empress, but to him, she was a woman.
If she had stubbornly clung to an Empress’ demeanor and refused to descend from that position, he would have tried to claim her by any means necessary, even if it meant resorting to more dangerous measures.
However, he was satisfied that he didn’t have to go to such risky lengths. Concealing his own burning desire to pull her down to where he was, he didn’t release his grip on Isilis from his arms.
As they observed a messenger approaching from a distance, he expressed his regret.
“An intruder is coming.”
“An Empress’ position is naturally a busy one.”
“It’s my messenger.”
Isilis smiled back at him.
“Later tonight…”
“At night…”
They uttered the same words, waiting for each other to speak. Berthas whispered to her with a sly grin.
“See you tonight.”
“Sure.”
He turned his gaze to the approaching messenger, and Isilis led the ladies-in-waiting and attendants away.
“Regent.”
“I’ve been waiting.”
He received the documents related to the recent investigations. Although he had urged for a quick investigation, it was faster than he had expected.
“Here are the materials you requested.”
“You’ve arrived quite fast.”
“I encountered a messenger sent by Sir Hector on my way here.”
“Sir Hector?”
It was a letter containing information about someone who had plotted a rebellion, aiming for the Emperor’s throne in Hillenton. They had been apprehended even before they could put their plan into motion, and it was awaiting Berthas’ decision.
Another document was the investigation into the magic bullets, as he had requested.
“They say Sir Hector has already investigated the magic bullets with the help of a wizard and concluded the investigation.”
“Is that so?”
“They found that the magic bullets are entirely useless.”
“Useless?”
“Yes.”
The messenger’s words contained a surprising fact.
The magic bullets purchased by Hillenton were only half-functional. Even though they contained magic, the magic was structured in such a way that only the person who made the magic bullets could use them.
In other words, it was akin to buying garbage with money.
“Is there no way to extract the magic from inside?”
“Reprocessing it would cost even more. The court wizard believes it’s not necessary.”
“Then, did the former Emperor and the Crown Prince, who purchased these, not know about this?”
“It seems they acquired them privately, as there’s no record of purchasing them officially. They did intend to use them, though the magic bullets didn’t work.”
“So, who sent such a thing to Hillenton and for what purpose?”
“Could it have been someone from Larchen trying to take advantage of HIllenton’s wealth?”
Berthas raised an eyebrow at the messenger’s words. Hillenton was not such a wealthy nation. Larchen should have known about its situation. Ultimately, it seemed like Larchen was playing some game with Hillenton.
“What did Sir Hector have to say about this?”
“He requested your opinion.”
Berthas was satisfied that he had been asked for his opinion rather than making a judgment.
“Execute all the traitors and hang their bodies outside the palace.”
“Understood.”
“I will investigate the purpose of these magic bullets myself. Also, there may be hidden funds of the former Emperor and the Crown Prince, so tell him to look for them. Secretly.”
“I will keep that in mind.”
Watching the messenger hurry away, Berthas pondered.
Who could it be? The one who had been stirring tension between Hillenton and Larchen. The former Emperor and Crown Prince hadn’t purchased the magic bullets in preparation for his rebellion. They didn’t know about his resentment.
So, they had acquired the magic bullets for an attack on Larchen. Those magic bullets turned out to be garbage.
“Who on earth could it be?”
His face hardened as he sat in a chair arranged in one corner of the garden.
He detested problems for which he couldn’t find answers.
Abruptly rising from his seat and hurriedly leaving the garden, he thought he needed Faylos’ intelligence.
A few days later, Isilis once again faced Faylos.
“Why do you keep summoning me?”
She wanted to smack his nonchalant face.
“What about the information, Faylos?”
“What I gave you is all there is.”
“What about the previous information?”
“As far as I know, no one has more information than we have. You do know our organization operates in points, right? They gather information separately, and I consolidate it into a single narrative. So, there’s no chance of leaks, except for cases of betrayal.”
“Except for when you betray me.”
“That’s true.”
Smiling as he threw a sharp look her way, Faylos placed his index finger against his lips.
“I’ll shut my mouth.”
“I suppose you should.”
He spoke playfully as he watched Isilis continue to look at the documents.
“You trust me too much, don’t you?”
“It’s not that I trust you; it’s that I know you won’t do anything foolish.”
“Why is that?”
“You love your family more than you think. They’re in the Capital, so there’s no need for me to force you. If you cherish your family, you’ll stay quiet.”
“Isilis!”
“Lower your voice, Faylos.”
With a blank expression, Isilis continued speaking as she looked at Faylos.
“I’m sparing your arrogant self for one reason only. It’s because you have no ambition for this position. If it were not you but your mother, things would be different.”
“Though my mother also has imperial blood!”
“But she gave up. What good is magic in someone who is lesser than those not of the imperial bloodline?”
Faylos sat down abruptly in response to her words, his face showing hesitation.
“If you were trying to anger me and provoke a reaction, you’ve succeeded.”
“I was trying to provoke a reaction, but I’m disappointed there’s no significant response.”
“I truly have no intention of taking your place.”
“Even if it’s not my place, you can take my daughter’s place, right?”
Faylos turned to Isilis with a questioning face.
“You don’t think you and Berthas are holding on, do you?”
“We can’t predict the future.”
“Isilis.”
“So, you’re not certain either.”
“Even if my mother aimed for your daughter, I’d step in and stop her. You’re already a handful, Isilis. ‘That’ Berthas HIllenton. I absolutely don’t want to turn against him.”
Isilis raised an eyebrow as she watched Faylos tremble.
“Sometimes, you seem more afraid of Berthas than me.”
“You’re being deceived, Isilis. There’s no one more sinister than him.”
“What nonsense.”
She laughed off Faylos’s words, casually brushing them aside. Berthas was someone who always seemed obedient to her. He couldn’t hide a different side from her.
“Fine, keep believing that. After all, you’re already in love, so whatever I say won’t matter to you.”
“Nonsense.”
“Alright, alright.”
Although Faylos’ gesture of waving his hand away was impolite, Isilis let it slide.
