Chapter 78
Isilis laughed when the High Priest asked like she was asking something obvious.
“Right. The High Priest is right.”
“Please come back soon with the necklace.”
“Will you designate the imperial wedding day on that day?”
“Of course, a temple should appear as an ambassador of the empire. Even if you don’t tell me, I will designate a good day from God.”
As the High Priest smiled and spoke kindly, Isilis, who had looked at his face for a moment, stood up, and Berthas followed suit
Then, the High Priest whispered to them.
“May the path ahead be filled with only blessings.”
“Thank you.”
“Thank you.”
She stopped the High Priest, who tried to follow her and left the temple with Berthas in satisfaction. As soon as she stepped out, she held his hand first.
Surprised by her touch, he raised his head, and Isilis brought her face close to his. Her eyes curved beautifully when she saw him, unable to avoid her suddenly approaching face and having no choice but to offer his lips to her.
His vision changed as he gazed at her face in fascination as she used magic to move through space. When he turned his eyes to look at her, dazed by the scenery changing in an instant, he shrugged her shoulders and whispered.
“Shall we go, too?”
“Go… where?”
“Play.”
Isilis, who was attempting to enter the imperial palace, changed the destination and went to the capital of Larchen. It had been a long time since she had looked around the capital, and although it was a sudden whim of hers, she really liked the way she was now.
“Something has changed in you.”
“You don’t like it?”
“No, no.”
She liked the sight of Berthas’ face as he returned a faint smile to her. When a wizard dressed in fancy clothes with red hair and navy blue eyes appeared in the market, everyone’s attention was focused.
“Your Majesty!
“Empress!”
“I forgot to change my hair color.”
An embarrassed voice came out. The crowds surrounding her were so great that Isilis was wondering if she should use her magic again.
Then, someone grabbed her clothes.
“Your Majesty!”
“Isilis!”
At that moment, Berthas quickly grabbed her by the waist and pulled her back against his body to protect her.
As the man who grabbed her clothes shrunk under his stern gaze, Isilis lightly touched Berthas’ arm, who was holding her tightly and not letting go. It was only when he saw her eyes asking him to let go that he relaxed his hold.
“Do you have something to say to me?”
The sight of her straightening her back and taking a step forward gave off an elegant aura. The people of the empire who watched her majestic appearance held their breath.
“For what reason did you grab my clothes? Do you have something to say?”
Reacting to her question, the man who grabbed her clothes could not say anything. It was the first time he had seen the Empress up close, and he couldn’t stop his hand from reaching out without realizing it.
Isilis opened her mouth again as his face turned red.
“If you have nothing to say, can I go? I want to go undercover.”
“Please…. Go ahead!”
Berthas moved to the side, escorting Isilis, who extended her arms gracefully toward him. As the crowds of people cleared the way, she used her magic and spoke.
“Just keep doing what you’re doing. I just came out to look around.”
With her words, everyone returned to their place.
“What kind of going undercover is this…”
“Why, doesn’t everyone ignore you?”
There were no crowds like when she first appeared. However, the people who had returned to their places were looking at the two of them with flushed faces. Even though Berthas was uncomfortable by the gazes, he could feel wherever they went, Isilis did not want to return to the imperial castle.
He opened his mouth, escorting her as he gave up.
“Is this fun?”
“Yes, it’s more enjoyable to see the faces of the people of the empire. Aren’t they my people?”
The noisy market became quiet at the sound of her voice.
“Without them, there would be no Larchen, and there would be no me.”
“You are different from the former Emperor of Hillenton.”
“What kind of education does Hillenton provide to the imperial family?”
“It doesn’t matter. Our child will follow Larchen’s methods.”
“That’s good.”
Isilis nodded her head, her red hair shining in the sunlight.
Berthas saw that and stopped walking for a moment though Isilis continued walking. It was a pity that the bustling market had become quiet, but the gaze of the people looking at them with sparkling eyes was not bad.
“Have you ever walked around like this?”
“No. Never.”
“How much is this?”
She asked as she approached the stall that was selling trinkets, and the bewildered vendor shouted back at her.
“You can just take it!”
“I guess you think the Empress of the empire is a thief.”
“Absolutely not!”
She smiled at the sight of the merchant waving at her and picked up the ruby.
“The price should be reasonable.”
“Of course!”
“It’s not a bad item.”
“It’s different from what you said last time in the port city.”
“Isn’t the situation different from back then?”
As she was examining the ruby here and there, she paid for it to the merchant. She forcibly handed over the money the merchant refused to take, and then Isilis resumed her walking.
Berthas whispered as he looked back to see the merchant staring blankly at her.
“He’s mesmerized.”
“I guess it’s because he saw the Empress in person.”
“Are you going to keep wandering around?”
“I guess I should go. They must be uncomfortable.”
It was fun to look around, but she couldn’t make the people of the empire stop making their living. The store where she bought the item was sure to be overflowing with customers after today.
When she beckoned, she and Berthas moved to the imperial palace.
“Did you do that on purpose?”
“What?”
“Buying something from that merchant.”
“You noticed.”
It was the most shabby place among stores. Moreover, the owner’s clothes were shabby compared to those of the merchants around. The crucial thing was that there was a child wandering near the store.
“You have pretty good observation skills.”
“I take it as a compliment.”
Berthas opened his arms towards her at Isilis’s words.
“What are you doing?”
“To give a hug to the Empress for a job well done.”
“What?”
“Come and hug me.”
When Isilis laughed out loud as she looked at him waiting with his arms outstretched, Berthas also laughed at her and hugged her as she approached. The servants and ladies-in-waiting who saw them embracing in the imperial palace garden turned their heads, but they didn’t care.
Right now, each other was the most important thing to them.
“The child’s hair color changed?”
“That’s right. Your Majesty.”
“Don’t worry. It’s natural since she has manifested her magical power.”
Meryl, who was hesitant to respond to Isilis, who was flipping through the documents without any hesitation, opened her mouth.
“Excuse me… Your Majesty. The Crown Princess’ name is…”
“Ah, it will be announced at the coronation ceremony. Don’t worry.”
“Understood.”
After struggling with what to name the child, she decided to name the child on her own.
While she thought about asking Berthas, she didn’t want to do it. It was her child. There was no denying that Berthas was the father, but this child was a member of the imperial family and would be her successor.
Since the child who manifested her magic also needed a wizard’s true name, it was better to reduce at least one person who knew.
She was glad she didn’t announce it in advance. If it had been announced in advance, the name would have been listed in the book at the Great Temple. Since the name listed in that way had to be confirmed by the priest, the true name could have been exposed.
The book was burned, but it was as if the High Priest knew her true name as well.
“Where is the Previous Empress?”
“She disappeared without saying a word.”
“I see.”
Despite the thought that she would talk to her mother when she had time, it was too late. She felt sorry for her mother, who must have been through such hard times. Before she knew it, the title, which used to be called ‘Previous Empress,’ had changed to ‘Mother.’
The chief attendant in front of the office announced Faylos’ visit.
“Let him in.”
“Ilis!”
Isilis gestured towards Faylos, who was approaching while calling her nickname. His face looked bright as he lightly bowed.
“I’m glad everything worked out well.”
“I see. You guys should take a break.”
There was still work time left, but the aides quickly organized the documents as she spoke.
As they went outside, Isilis sent out all the knights and wizards who had been guarding her with a gesture. When they were left alone, she asked him, having cast a spell that prevented the sounds from escaping.
“Why did you keep quiet when you knew everything?”
“I kept telling you. There is no one more suitable for the position of Empress than you.”
“Is that the only reason?”
“No, not wanting to get involved in troublesome things also played a part.”
Faylos said as he plopped down on the chair in front of him. He whispered again with a hint of playfulness on his lips.
“Why, are you suspicious of me?”
“To be honest, yes. To hold such a secret in your hand and not ask for anything.”
“Isilis.”
“Why?”
“If I had tried to do something with that secret, I wouldn’t be here anymore.”
“Of course. You must be dead.”
“You say scary things so casually.”
“I’ll ask again. Faylos. What is the reason?”
Faylos’ expression changed at the seriousness of her voice. After he caught his breath, he looked straight into her eyes and spoke.
“I said I’ve never seen anyone more suited to the position of Empress than you. Although the Previous Empress lacked those qualities, she had excellent political sense. So even though she had those weaknesses, she was able to sit there.”
“I know that the previous Empress’ magical power was lacking.”
“The Empress’ consort filled that part.”
“I know Father struggled.”
“As the child of those two, you were a natural ruler. A monarch who seems to control everyone with magic but knows how to listen to people’s opinions and has compassion for others. That was you. Isilis.”
“I know I’m a great person, so stop praising me.”
“No, there are rare members of the imperial family whose attitude does not change even after sitting on the emperor’s throne. I saw that in you.”
“You said you deal with information, but you put honey in your mouth.”
“That’s why. The reason I kept silent about all the facts I learned while investigating the matter regarding the previous Empress’ consort.”
