Chapter 114
“Is that so?”
“Right.”
With Leonhard’s words, a heavy silence settled inside the carriage.
Celine, while trying to avoid his gaze, stole a glance at his face and suddenly their eyes met. He had a strange expression that made it impossible to guess his intentions.
“I, I didn’t know you thought that way.”
Celine continued to stammer, feeling like a fool.
“I’m glad you know now.”
Fortunately, he nodded to her words.
As the carriage was filled with a heavy silence, Celine leaned back in her chair, pretending to sleep. Her desire to sleep was like a chimney, but she couldn’t, thanks to her pounding heart that refused to calm down.
Leonhard remained seated without moving until Celine’s breathing became even, as if she had fallen into a deep sleep. He couldn’t get the image of her startled expression from earlier out of his head.
‘Celine…’
He confirmed that she had fallen completely asleep before finally closing his eyes.
Three months had passed since that dreadful night, yet there had been no progress in his relationship with Celine. Of course, he no longer felt any guilt and could whisper words of love to Celine.
Still, a vow of eternity was something he couldn’t even dare to articulate.
By worldly standards, his attitude toward Celine was nothing less than playing with her and nothing more than that.
Leonhard was neither a fool nor clueless, so he was aware that similar unfounded rumors were already circulating. Celine, who had a somewhat naive side, might not have known, but it offered no comfort.
‘Does Celine think that it’s okay to stay like this?’
He swallowed hard.
There was no way any woman would want to stay by the side of a man who couldn’t even vow eternity.
‘…Ah.’
All of a sudden, a bone-chilling realization washed over Leonhard. There was a possibility that she didn’t know he could never propose to her.
‘I thought she would naturally know.’
Celine knew nothing about Leonhard other than his name and Rashir. She didn’t even know that he had no thoughts of marriage. One day, which seemed like ancient history, he did mention it, though she wouldn’t know the reason.
‘I have to talk to her.’
Leonhard looked down at his hands, his gaze wavering. For someone who had killed so many warlocks, his hands were surprisingly clean. It might have been better if only the visible things were distorted. The curse left by the warlocks distorted his future.
Assuming he avoided a future where he sacrificed her and became a tyrant, the curse remained that none of his descendants would live a proper life.
So far, this issue hadn’t been a burden for him.
The succession issue could be solved by adopting a nephew when his healthy younger siblings had a child in the future, and so far, there hadn’t been any woman he wanted to consider as his life partner.
Until Celine, he also realized the same feelings.
If she hadn’t kissed him in that snowy wasteland, he would have hidden his feelings for the rest of his life… But as always, she had revealed her heart, shattering his own. She didn’t know that he could never propose to her.
‘I am no different from deceiving Celine.’
Leonhard reached out towards Celine, then quickly clenched his fist again. Even though it might not matter right now, the problem was the future, which they didn’t know when it would come.
Eventually, Celine would wonder why he didn’t vow eternity to her.
‘At first, it might just be a simple question.’
However, eventually, he would have to confess to her… that he was not the man to consider a future together and would ask her to find someone else and leave, along with the lie that he wished for her eternal happiness.
‘….’
Leonhard closed his eyes again. He wanted to escape from the sight of Celine, which he couldn’t help but watch.
When he opened his eyes, he had made up his mind.
‘When we return to the north, I have to tell her everything.’
And he would step back, just like a long time ago, when he never expected the miracle of Celine accepting his heart. Until then, he would continue to play the role of her lover by her side.
It was a cowardly decision, but he had no other choice.
He felt like he couldn’t live without a piece of happiness to cherish for a lifetime in his heart.
Celine woke up, feeling a mark on her cheek.
‘I, I really fell asleep…’
She had pretended to be asleep to avoid the discomfort of Leonhard’s persistent gaze, but she had fallen asleep for real. When she raised her head, she noticed that Leonhard was staring blankly out the window.
Celine approached him and looked out the window with him.
Dawn had already broken.
“How far are we?”
“Still a long way to go.”
Leonhard replied shortly, avoiding her gaze.
‘….?’
She was perplexed, tilting her head in confusion. It was quite the opposite of last night.
“Did something happen?”
“…How could it be?”
“That’s right.”
As she naturally sat closer to Leonhard, feeling his warmth, his body immediately stiffened and she laughed.
“Leonhard, why are you suddenly like this!”
“It’s nothing.”
Still, even as he spoke, he didn’t relax his body’s tension.
“What’s wrong?’
“Nothing.”
“Or did you have some strange thoughts?”
“….”
Instead of answering, Leonhard looked at her blankly.
Blushing again under his gaze, Celine spoke confidently, driven by a sudden impulse.
“I don’t know why Leonhard is acting like this, but… I can tell you what I’m thinking right now.”
“What is it?”
His words sounded somewhat dry.
Celine, feeling a little annoyed, stood up.
“….!”
Leonhard’s eyes widened as he felt her soft lips, then closed them. The next moment, he pulled Celine forcefully towards his body… imprinting every moment in his heart.
‘It’s been three months.’
Celine gazed up at the towering Livron Castle, lost in thought for a moment. The last image she remembered of Livron Castle was a scene filled with green smoke, the scene of chaos, but now the castle looked splendid.
“What’s with you?”
“Just because it’s been a while.”
“I see.”
Leonhard nodded his head. It had been three months since he had come to Livron Castle. After returning to the north and retrieving Rashir, he immediately headed to Bernoulli Castle, where Celine was waiting for him.
“You must not have missed it.”
“Of course not!”
Celine chuckled.
“I like Bernoulli Castle.”
“… I’m glad to hear that.”
Leonhard’s response came after a slight pause. They slowly made their way to the audience room where the Emperor was waiting.
Fortunately, Lou stopped outside the door to the audience room, since the door was too small for Lou to enter easily. Naturally, only the Emperor and the Crown Prince were in the audience room because all information regarding Cordelia Unsorem was classified.
Celine realized that instead of the usual guarded expression, the Crown Prince was looking at Leonhard with a face that clearly indicated disbelief.
Leonhard respectfully knelt on the floor.
“Frederick’s son, Leonhard, greets His Majesty the Emperor and His Highness, the Crown Prince.”
“Come on, get up.”
The Emperor waved his hand.
“I’ve heard about the purple iris…”
Despite the fact that the Emperor seemed to be trying to appear calm, he couldn’t hide the blurred tone in his words.
‘Purple iris must be a code name.’
“…Yes.”
As Leonhard took out a piece of jewelry from his pocket and extended it politely toward him with both hands, the Emperor received the piece of jewelry with trembling hands. It was a platinum bracelet adorned with amethyst and diamonds that shone brightly.
“This is…”
He couldn’t speak properly, but it was evident to everyone present that the Emperor recognized the bracelet.
“There was only a small part of the remains, and I respectfully sent it away, considering their former status.”
Leonhard lied without batting an eye.
Celine remembered how he had hastily burned the remaining traces of Cordelia. Even that seemed more like a cleanup to completely erase any traces rather than a funeral ritual.
“…Thank you for your hard work.”
The Emperor mumbled to Leonhard, then turned his head toward the Crown Prince.
“I’m not feeling well. You can take the report.”
“Understood.”
The Crown Prince responded quickly, almost too hastily.
In the meanwhile, the Emperor staggered out of the audience room, clutching the brooch, looking clearly shocked. Celine thought that it was the weakest face she had ever seen among the imperial family she had encountered so far.
The Crown Prince didn’t speak until he was sure the Emperor had completely left the audience room.
“Leonhard, tell me. How did that witch… die?”
There was a strange excitement in the Crown Prince’s voice. Leonhard slowly explained how they had encountered Cordelia and what had happened to her in the end, carefully hiding the fact that it was Celine who had actually ended Cordelia’s life.
As soon as he finished his explanation, the Crown Prince got up from his seat and strode towards him.
‘….!’
Celine’s eyes widened.
The Crown Prince embraced Leonhard for a brief moment. It was a fleeting gesture, and he soon stepped back, his eyes shining with admiration and joy.
“To think that you put an end to that witch…!”
“It was something that needed to be done.”
“Yes, it needed to be done. But I am happier about this than anything else you’ve done so far.”
“Your Highness’s happiness is my own.”
The Crown Prince paced the audience room for a moment.
“I don’t know how to reward this.”
“You don’t need to worry about it too much.”
“Don’t say it like that.”
The Crown Prince shook his head.
“You’ve eliminated a specter lurking in our empire… How can I pass it without any reward?”
The Crown Prince looked Leonhard straight in the eye.
“Of course, you’re not someone who desires anything. You already have everything the empire can give.”
“….”
Leonhard neither confirmed nor denied.
“Well, how about this then?”
A small smile appeared at the corner of the Crown Prince’s mouth.
“I’ll grant you immunity.”
“I already have considerable immunity…”
“That’s not what I mean.”
The Crown Prince shook his head.
“Even if you were to execute a noble, I will provide you with a document of immunity.”
Celine couldn’t even catch her breath as she couldn’t grasp the Crown Prince’s intentions at all.
Leonhard’s calm voice came.
“Your Highness, even if you were to grant it, I cannot accept it. The very fact that I possess such authority is disrespectful.”
“Is that so?”
Seeing the Crown Prince seemed visibly disappointed, she heaved a sigh of relief. For once, it seemed that the Crown Prince’s offer had come from pure goodwill and joy, without any ulterior motives.
“Then, do you really have nothing you wanted?”
“I do have one thing… but I’m not sure if it’s possible.”
“Really?”
“Yes.”
Leonhard glanced briefly at Celine before speaking.
“Please allow me to meet the beginning of the dragon, Pangea.”
