Chapter 67
It felt like his heart had stopped.
Anticipation.
For a moment, he agonized over whether he had seen something wrong. Cold sweat seemed to be coming out of the hand he was holding.
At that moment, it felt like someone had taken out his heart and stoned it. What on earth does she want? If he was mistaken, it felt like someone could strangle him at this moment. It was such a harsh thought.
“…Tarhan.”
The moment the child’s lips gently parted, and his name came out, he felt like he was going to lose his mind and retreated again.
She was embarrassed to the point of death by the terrible smell of skin and blood that might come from his body. Even though his hair was still wet from the wash, he was worried about the bloody smell that might come out.
If someone were to open his head and get a glimpse of his thoughts right then and there, they would point out that he was the world’s worst moron.
Still, he couldn’t look away from the gap visible between her slightly opened lips. The inside of her mouth was completely dry. It was as if a tingling sensation ran down his spine and spread between his toes.
Finally, he jumped up from the place like the crazy man he was.
“Get on my back.”
A harsh, completely indifferent sound came out that was completely different from what he had been thinking.
Pretending to wipe away what might be water droplets or sweat running down his temples, he turned around and crouched down in front of her, sticking out his back.
When he thought about the wetness between the bones moving up and down on his bare back, he was mortally embarrassed, thinking that his feelings had been discovered. Nonetheless, he couldn’t go back to the house, holding her in his arms and looking at her face.
Enya went to his back without hesitation.
She was always like that. There were times when she came into his arms before he could even open his arms to her as if she had been waiting… as if she was glad to reach him.
An expression filled with something.
Every time he remembered that fact, he felt a strange feeling in his heart, like he was being pricked by a needle.
The slender arms hugged the back of his neck tightly and held him close, and the fuzzy feeling spread across his entire back. Without realizing it, she faltered with every step she took, so he had to pick her up and carry her. Otherwise, her leg would swell so much that she wouldn’t be able to walk even one step.
As he thought about how even his earlobes would be red, he gritted his teeth.
“Tarhan… I’m sorry, I’m heavy.”
Her hair was fluttering in his ear, and he could hear the child’s wonderful sound. The way she hesitated and asked that without knowing what that did, seemed like she really thought she was heavy.
Tarhan didn’t even answer.
To him, who had to carry three baskets of her size on his back every day, it felt like she weighed as little as a bundle of wool. Nevertheless, he couldn’t even open his mouth because he was afraid that if he answered, a strange sound, like the sound of a strangled toad, would come out.
Her slender legs dangling from his arms were plump, and each time he took a step, his heart rattled as if a huge rock was falling.
As he thought about hearing the child’s heartbeat on her back, he thought it would be nice if his heart just stopped for a moment. She must have thought that he was in a bad mood, so she kept her mouth shut and gently rested her small head on his back.
Did she close her eyes?
At that moment, he was extremely curious about what kind of expression she would make while being on his back.
In the meanwhile, he didn’t even notice that the child’s hand around his neck was fidgeting nervously.
He didn’t know how he got home.
“From now on, I will sleep in the kitchen.”
Tarhan made a declaration he had been pondering for a long time. Seeing her eyes widen when she heard those words made him feel numb again, like his heart was broken.
She nodded her head, saying she understood, but she couldn’t reply with that somewhat hurt face.
That night, after taking care of the bedding, he tried to sleep alone in the kitchen, with her body not in his arms. But there was no way his eyes could close. The dark ceiling seemed as if it was going to swallow him up.
Since the first time they slept together, they have never fallen asleep separately.
“Come quickly. Sleep.”
When she rubbed her eyes, which were starting to close, he would urge her bluntly. Then, she would finish what she was doing and hurried to lie down next to him.
That girl and he would sleep with their backs against each other, and when he opened his eyes, he would often wake up with their arms wrapped around each other. It was always like that, so there was no way he could fall asleep, even if he tried to sleep now.
Even inside the room, the sound of tossing and turning continued for a long time, showing that both of them were in the same situation. Then, he closed his eyes and took a few deep breaths, pretending to fall asleep before really feeling like falling asleep.
His body was hot.
He could hear a groaning sound like a small animal grunting in his sleep.
“…Enya?”
He opened his eyes, lifted his body, walked on his knees, and headed towards the room where she would be lying. She was clutching her stomach, curling her body into a ball, sweating coldly and making groaning sounds.
When she saw him, her eyes widened slightly, and her embarrassment began to tinge. Suddenly, he realized that she was still on her period.
It felt like someone was pouring cold water on his mind.
She quickly got up, covered herself with the blanket, and tilted her head. A small sound burst from her mouth.
“Did you wake up because of me? Sorry, my stomach hurts…”
Apologizing was her habit. Even though she didn’t do anything wrong, she always felt sorry. Every time she did that, it occurred to him that it would be better for her to put a dagger in his hand and stab him.
Without thinking anymore, Tarhan got up with a deep sigh. He brought water, which was always boiled in the evening, to the room in a water bag made from pig’s intestinal skin.
He slowly approached her, crawling on all fours, and positioned himself behind her. He placed one arm around her neck, and with the other arm, he very carefully placed the bag of warm water on her lower stomach.
Suddenly, the groaning noises subsided, and the cold sweat on the back of her neck began to cool and disappear. He could feel her body relaxing comfortably in his arms.
At that moment, it felt like butterflies were fluttering in his stomach.
“…Is it warm?”
He could feel her quickly nodding her head at the barely uttered words.
Her little fingers crept up onto his hands, which were folded on her lower stomach, so close that they almost touched him. As he watched her slowly calm down, Tarhan thought he could do this until he died. Then, without her knowing, he placed his nose on her head.
As the scent of fragrant grass and an indescribably warm scent entered his nose, his toes curled, and his thighs stiffened, and at the same time, an inexplicable feeling of comfort filled him.
In the incredible disharmony of comfort and discomfort, Tarhan closed his eyes tightly, consumed by a desperate feeling of happiness. At the same time, while she was in this much pain, the fact that he was so happy to have her in his arms seemed like an absolute evil to her, and his judgment got twisted again.
‘You idiot… You are truly irredeemable.’
He groaned self-deprecatingly. He no longer knew how to interpret his own feelings. It had been a long time since everything went haywire.
At that time, he felt her slightly twisting her body as if she was uncomfortable. Tarhan quickly loosened the grip on her, where he had been holding her tightly without his knowledge, allowing her to move freely and change her position.
But instead of changing the angle or direction of her limbs, she carefully turned her head and looked for his face in the dark. She looked at him face to face and seemed to have something she wanted to say.
His mind seemed to stop for a moment as she cried out with tears hanging from her eyes as she didn’t know what to do.
“I, I stink….”
He couldn’t understand what she was saying. Standing there in the dark, dumbfounded, she heard the woman’s voice sounding so low, as if she was crying, but he couldn’t make out what she meant. He didn’t know if they were speaking the same language.
“The smell of medicinal herbs… is terrible, right?”
It was only after she kindly pointed it out that he realized what she was talking about.
Her leg. She thought he was starting to avoid sleeping together with her because he was disgusted by the smell of herbs that were always applied there.
Was that what she meant?
How could she think like that?
Tarhan realized what it was like to have his head flashing white. Did she stay silent for a while because she had those thoughts in mind? He had no idea where to start with this unbelievable idea. His vision suddenly narrowed.
From her, only an indescribably warm and fresh scent flowed. When he smelled it, it felt so good that he couldn’t tell whether the place he was lying in was grass or not.
Tarhan’s entire neck stiffened, and he could barely shout.
“That can’t be possible…!”
He saw her shrug her shoulders in surprise. Even he was surprised by the sound, which was louder than he expected, so he was taken aback. He quickly crawled in and breathed a warm breath into her ear.
He didn’t even notice that his hand, which was still touching her lower stomach, was straining.
“There’s no way you could smell like that. For you, always… Ugh, the smell of monster bone powder on me would be more disgusting. The smell of blood coming from my hands…!”
Suddenly, a strain came to his neck. He was so embarrassed that he couldn’t continue speaking. The more he talked, the more miserable he felt.
It was at that moment that a small voice came out of her throat.
“But I, I…”
At night. In the invisible darkness.
Her delicate voice burst out in confusion. It was a creeping voice because her eyes were wide open. Perhaps it was anticipation, but the voice contained deep emotions that he could not possibly understand.
She confessed.
“… Tarhan’s hands are the best in the world. It’s so warm, so big, and there’s nothing you can’t do with these hands… To me, better than any other hand…”
The air coming out of those lungs was so sweet. The heartbeat, like that of a small bird in his arms, seemed to flow through the tendons of his wrist and into his arteries.
Thump, thump, thump.
It made him wonder how that small heart could beat so vigorously.
“I—Ta, Tarhan… I am…”
It felt like someone was tearing at his heart.
He didn’t even know it was happening until the water bag in his hand fell to the floor with a thud. Enya moved her body motionlessly as if she had stopped breathing. Looking down at the back of her head, he couldn’t say anything.
