Chapter 66
That day, too, after a hard day’s work, Tarhan’s steps toward the empty field were heavy. He had already washed his blood and sweat-covered body at a nearby well for fear that the girl would be surprised by what she saw.
When he lifted his arm and sniffed it, the disgusting smell of the black spiked wolf’s skin that he had spent half a day ripping to the bone before came to him.
‘D*mn…’
He was always worried that the girl would also smell the bad smell of the monster coming from his body. As he quickly changed his mind about returning home, Tarhan turned and hurried back to the well.
He thought about washing himself one more time.
When he approached, he felt the Aquilean girls who were drawing water around the well stop and glance at him.
These days, there have been a lot of people looking at him like that. At first, the women looked at him with disgust as he came from the empty field, but after a while, they blushed and were busy giggling among themselves.
It was the same this time as well. As he approached, the women who were chatting by the well, each holding a water pot at their side, were muttering something and exchanging glances among themselves.
Tarhan completely ignored them and drew water and poured it over his head again and again.
Even after rubbing his face and shoulders with both hands again, the gaze focused on his back did not go away. Feeling somewhat upset, he shook off the wetness and was about to pack up his daily wage and turn around when suddenly a dry cloth fell at his feet.
As he picked it up, a roaring laughter erupted from somewhere.
He raised his sharp eyes to find the owner of the cloth and saw a woman sitting with other women by the well, leaning her body languidly against the tree trunk and smiling faintly at him. When their eyes met, the woman chuckled and gestured towards him with her hand.
The woman’s intertwined legs slowly untied and parted slightly, revealing the bare skin beneath her skirt.
At that moment, an indescribable curse arose.
‘What the hell is this?’
As his face suddenly turned grim, the expressions of the Aquilean girls who were giggling as they looked at him also turned anxious.
Tarhan didn’t take off his ferocious gaze towards them and trampled the cloth at his feet. When they saw that, they immediately averted their gaze and cleared their throats before they quickly took the pots and left.
He spat as he watched them quickly disappear. He had no idea what kind of mind they were showing such interest in him.
‘D*mn barbarians… On the outside, they were cursing me, calling me dirty blood from a ruined country, but on the inside, they were thinking of trying to lure me into bed…’
Suddenly, he remembered something that happened the other day.
He was called to the barracks of a woman who was the daughter of the Supreme Elder Haron and who had recently given birth to another son to Chief Kahanti. A lean woman who was nursing a baby who was just starting to crawl welcomed him lazily, who had been dragged from work without knowing why.
“Can’t you be polite to Servia?”
The soldier who dragged him there kicked him in the shin, made him kneel and shouted.
Servia.
It was definitely that name.
That day, he was beaten to the ground while kneeling on the floor for disobeying orders to massage her back with oil. The woman, who had a strong impression like a female cat, gritted her teeth as if this was the first time she had been insulted like that in her life.
She ordered Tarhan to be whipped, and then she disappeared into the tent.
“You came from the freaking middle of nowhere! You have the worst sense of humor despite your face! I thought that my face might be useful, so I told Servia, but you idiot kicked the opportunity away…!”
The supervisor, whose head was half bald, was furious, kicking Tarhan’s back torn from the whipping. Tarhan didn’t even open his mouth until the end, without even looking at the b*stard.
‘I didn’t even say I was going to do something like this from the beginning.’
He also knew that among the low-level workers like him, fair-faced and useful ones were often called separately to the barracks for high-ranking women. He also knew that those who were called in that way chose to take on the comfortable job.
But after that incident, his supervisor only gave him more and more difficult work.
‘Do you think I’ll suck Aquilea’s just because of that…’
Tarhan gritted his teeth as he recalled the incident. His steps on the way home became faster as he got more angry.
No matter how crazy they were, even if they gave him a hut near a large rock, there was no way he would suck that woman’s crotch, even if he were going to die. As he was walking back home, he suddenly saw a familiar figure.
An eye-popping sight was unfolding before his eyes.
Enya, who must have been waiting for him to return home from their house, came out to the entrance of the village.
Of course, she wasn’t alone.
She was begging in a thin voice between two Aquilean men who were trying to drag her by the wrists and lead her to the tree trunk.
“Please, please let go…!”
This was her first time experiencing something like that, so she couldn’t figure out what to do. Her shaking voice was mixed with crying. The fruit and rice grains were scattered from the basket that had fallen from her caught wrist and ended up as a mess on the group.
She kept a tight grip on her wrists as she was held by the men.
Even though she tried to resist the force, it was no use. Her small body was being dragged mercilessly by two large men. Her trembling legs gave out all her strength, and she fell to the ground.
When one of the men tried to pick her up, sparks flew before his eyes.
He didn’t know how he ran all the way there.
When he came to his senses, Tarhan saw that he was riding on top of the bodies of two men and blindly punching them in front of dozens of Aquilleans.
“You rotting, scum b*stards…! I’ll cut off your hands and feet right away…!”
It felt like blood was spitting out of his mouth every time he screamed. His vision became blurry as if it had been set on fire.
By the time he came to, the bodies of two men much larger than him were lying on the street like huge lumps. Blood from their noses and mouths dripped like water droplets from his bloody fists. He didn’t even pay attention to the noise of people whispering or calling for someone.
Tarhan picked up Enya, who was lying on the floor, and then started walking blindly. The people crowding around him quickly moved out of the way for him, but he didn’t even notice them. His only thought was to get out of that place right away.
“Hu, huuhp… Huuhpp…!”
It broke his heart as she covered her mouth and sobbed in his arms. Not knowing what to do, he frantically patted her body he had picked up and poured out words. There were also occasional swear words mixed in.
They walked for a while and arrived at their house.
Even then, she was sobbing and hugging his neck like she would die. He didn’t know how he could make her stop sobbing. It felt like he was abandoned in a vast ocean with no way to know what was ahead. The feeling of despair knew no end.
He wanted to check her face, so he tried to pull her body away for a moment, but Enya was hugging his neck so tightly that there was no way to check. He was boiling inside, feeling a mess, and he could barely hear a sound like the wind had gone out.
“I’m, I’m sorry. Tarhan, I’m sorry. It’s just… You’re, very, very late… I got worried so I just came out to the entrance and waited, huhp, but you couldn’t even eat lunch properly, uhh…”
With those words, his eyes turned dark.
He was so shocked that he couldn’t even come up with an answer right away and quickly sat her down in front of a tree nearby. Although it was a pile of rocks next to a dry branch that didn’t even have leaves on, it was enough for the small girl to sit on.
He wanted to wipe away the tears that were constantly flowing down her cheeks, but he couldn’t bring herself to place his rough hands on her soft skin. In the end, he had no choice but to sit down in front of her, clutching at a pile of stones and soothing her with a tearful voice.
But what does he know about comforting her?
“Don’t cry. It’s okay. I, I will kill those b*stards. I’ll go after them right away and cut off all the dirty hands they touched you with…”
Even though he tried to pick out the best words possible and try to get words of reassurance out, her sobbing only got louder.
Her tears couldn’t come out properly, her face turned bright red, and as she lowered her little head and whimpered, she couldn’t even move, as if she had committed the world’s blasphemy. His heart burst.
He wanted to cry with her, too.
She was biting her lip, somehow trying to hold back her cries, even as her body trembled hard. It felt like he was going to bleed.
After looking at her sadly, as a last resort, he raised his trembling index finger and carefully placed it on her lips. He wished he had bitten off his finger instead. Anyway, there were so many calluses that it seemed like she wouldn’t even make it bleed.
“Huuh…”
Then, the girl stopped crying in an instant.
There were still big tears hanging around her eyes, and if he touched them, they seemed to burst and run down though he held his breath and wiped them away.
This was the second time he had seen her cry in all the time they had been together.
His heart grieved.
Tarhan quickly removed his rough fingers from her delicate lips. He could not dare to touch her lips with his dirty fingers, which had been moving the gut remains of a monster just a moment ago, no matter how many times he washed it.
As soon as she stopped crying, a wave of relief washed over him in an instant. He opened her mouth with a sigh and tried to get up again.
“Now, let’s go home…”
A small hand hurriedly came and grabbed him. This was the first time they had ever been in contact this way, other than when they were sleeping, and he was so shocked that he flinched and almost fell backwards.
As he was barely able to raise one knee and regain his balance, the child’s crazy soft hand grabbed his hand and held it.
“E, Enya…”
When he called the girl’s name without realizing it, the girl’s eyes widened slightly at the blank voice as if every corner of her head was missing.
The tip of her dainty nose wrinkled slightly, and she glanced up at him with an expression he couldn’t quite figure out. She had been holding back her crying for a while, so her whole face was bright red, even down to her lips.
She opened her red lips as if she had something to say but soon closed her mouth again. It was because as she looked up at him, her heart felt like it was breaking for some reason.
The corners of her slightly frowning mouth were parted in shame and unknown expectation.
