Chapter 36
Sid spent the next day with Popo.
It was a late night, and he barely made it home from work because he had to stay late due to his master’s antics. However, thanks to Popo whimpering all night, he had to stay up with tired eyes. If Popo weren’t cute, he would’ve been furious.
Why did Elrod bring his puppy to the workplace?
When Elrod first adopted the puppy, he boasted about how he couldn’t live without it, saying it had separation anxiety. The day before, he had brought it to work to show off to his colleagues.
However, he was the one suffering while Elrod was still out on a field assignment and hadn’t returned yet.
“Sigh… Your owner will be here soon, so wait a little longer.”
Popo was a young puppy, just under a year old. It had a cute appearance with curly fur all over its body and a protruding snout.
It had been straining its throat, whimpering and barking, trying to find its owner who had left it here. Even though he tried to console it, it only worked temporarily. The quietest times were during mealtime and sleep.
Still, even so, today was going smoothly. There were no early morning calls, and through reports from other employees, Sid could tell that his master wasn’t in a bad mood. He started to work more relaxed than usual.
He managed the information guild operated under the name of the Hadid family and checked the earnings of Elkium’s battle arena, auction house and the shops in the commercial district.
Looking at the accumulating earnings day after day, he smiled with satisfaction. After receiving reports from each territory, including the Hadid Duchy and the Edith Barony, he first organized them and then wrote the reports.
“Whine, whine!”
“Wait a little longer.”
Sid quickly finished his work. Moreover, he had more time available while Elrod was in the capital city.
There was no need for him to go back and forth to the Barony, which was quite a hassle. It was true that the teleportation portals in the underground were created with a large sum of money, but using them frequently would make most tired as if working overtime.
Well, excluding his master with his monstrous stamina since he would be fine even if he used it a million times.
‘If he can maintain this mood for the rest of the day, I have nothing else to ask for.’
Sid petted Popo with one hand and hummed as he continued writing the reports. However, when he moved his gaze, he saw Popo in Kairos’ office.
It was an aghast sight. Kairos’ office was on the third floor, and he couldn’t understand how Popo managed to come all the way up here with its short legs. Its tiny eyes were like beans, and Sid felt dizzy looking into them.
“M-master.”
“Bark! Bark!”
Popo, standing on all fours, raised its head proudly and wagged its tail vigorously as it barked fiercely at Kairos.
Unless it were incredibly strong or a formidable beast, most creatures would tremble at the sight of their master. However, this little dog, about the size of two fists combined, showed great determination.
Somehow, as Kairos seemed completely disinterested and didn’t even bother to look, Popo started tugging at his pants.
“Arf…”
It whimpered, gripping the pants tightly with all two paws.
Sid couldn’t get close to Kairos due to the fear that bordered on terror, and his face turned pale. It was bothersome to deal with, yet his master showed no reaction. Why was that? He could have sent it away long ago. Seeing the curly chestnut-coloured fur, he couldn’t help but think of Hazel.
Still, he broke out in a cold sweat.
“What did you come here for? Speak up.”
Sid instantly lifted his head at those words.
“Ah, master. It’s just that I’ve successfully acquired the commercial zone in Sector 5 of Mayfield, Elcard. Lately, it’s been quite difficult to secure properties in the Capital, so I thought it would be a headache, but luckily, it worked out, didn’t it?”
“I see.”
“Nng, woof, grrr…”
Popo now turned back towards the door, scratching at it restlessly. Thanks to Sid closing the door and coming in, he couldn’t go outside anymore. While it was too late to realize, it wasn’t worth turning around and opening the door in the middle of the report.
Helpless, Sid left Popo scratching and whimpering and resumed his report.
“The new expansion project of the Soul Guild is also proceeding smoothly. The dispatched employees are working diligently, so you don’t have to worry. That’s all.”
“Alright, go.”
“Woof!”
Scratch, scratch!
“Yes.”
Just as he bowed slightly and turned to leave with Popo, Kairos called out from behind.
“Sid.”
“Yes? Master.”
Sid, who had been walking with a wobbly waist, straightened up again.
“Why is that dog whining like that?”
Kairos’ eyebrows furrowed with dissatisfaction. It was a small bundle of fur near him instead of Hazel. Even though it was a completely different breed and had a different appearance, it reminded him of Hazel.
He simply let it be to replace someone cute with something cute.
However, why was it whining so persistently? It seemed like it was searching for something, but since it couldn’t speak, it just looked like a puppy desperate to relieve itself.
Sid was once again extremely surprised inwardly. It was fascinating enough that he let an animal by his side, but now he was curious, too. He didn’t know what kind of emotional change it was, though he thought it was too drastic to understand it right away, so he decided to take some time to observe it.
“Oh, it’s the little puppy that Elrod raises. When it’s away from Elrod, it acts like that. It seems to feel anxious when it’s away from its owner. It’s noisy, isn’t it? I’m sorry. I’ll make sure this doesn’t happen again.”
“It acts like that just from being away from its owner?”
“Yes? Oh, yes. It only calms down when its owner appears. It even licks and wags its tail. Seems like it misses its owner so much.”
“….”
“It hardly sleeps and can’t stay still.”
Kairos’s eyes turned to Popo. Somehow, it seemed like a faint emotion was appearing in his calm red eyes.
“Its owner.”
What was with this eerie feeling?
Why did it act like that?
A thought suddenly crossed Kairos’ mind.
Kairos was also waiting for Hazel’s call like the lost puppy, and that thought made him burst out laughing.
Sid felt uneasy and scared when he saw that smile, but his master laughed to himself. It wasn’t a pleasant feeling. Why was he like this? This question had been on his mind since Hazel’s behavior started to change since her gaze had become different somehow.
“Right, that’s it.”
Why was it so unpleasant, making him nervous and worried? It was like something was constantly nagging at him, but he couldn’t bring her here to confirm right away.
Kairos clicked his tongue. Then, he casually waved his hand at Sid, telling him to take the puppy out.
I went to the palace today to teach Fay Martin and didn’t make it to the hotel lobby until late afternoon.
Yesterday, I was so tired that I didn’t even think to contact Noah when I came back to the hotel and collapsed on the bed after taking a bath.
The same goes for breakfast. I was fine the first day, but my taste buds were gradually rejecting the food that others had made. It tasted good, but it lacked something, unlike Noah’s food. I missed the food that would excite my senses and would make me feel abundant as it played a magnificent orchestra in my mouth.
The hotel breakfast, made by a chef from the palace kitchen, did not suit my taste buds, and I didn’t feel like going out to eat in the morning. So, when I said I didn’t want to eat, Nigella was horrified.
“You didn’t even eat dinner last night, can’t you please eat breakfast? If you want something, I’ll get it right away.”
“No, I’ll just have a glass of water today.”
“No, Boss!”
“Huh?”
“Um… I feel like my heart will be torn apart, Boss. Please, please. Even if it’s just three bites or even just one bite, please eat it.”
“No, it’s just one meal, what’s the big deal? Nigella, don’t make such a big fuss…”
“I’m your assistant, Boss. If I can’t take care of you properly, then I…”
“Then what?”
“…Nevermind. Part of my job is to take care of your health, so please let me do my job.”
“Um…in that case, I’ll just have a simple breakfast at the hotel, okay?”
“Thank you, Boss!”
