Chapter 35
‘Well, it’s only for a little while.’
I thought to myself as I decided to look into the details about Fay Martin separately later.
For now, I focused on her training as we had planned. According to Fay, severe phobias were the cause, so I concentrated on changing the negative memories first. I was so engrossed in the training that I didn’t notice the evening fading away until it was over.
After using the illusion spell without a break for a long time, her breathing became slightly labored.
“P-Please take care of me tomorrow, too…”
Fay said, clutching her knees and gasping for breath.
I conducted the training with low difficulty levels to ensure that she could develop an affection for the illusion spell. Even though I tried to accommodate her as much as possible, I was also overwhelmed.
“Can you do it tomorrow?”
“Of course! I’ll do my best!”
I smiled satisfactorily at her response.
“Then, let’s meet again tomorrow.”
After finishing my work with Fay and waiting in the office until the end of the training, Dylan went wild when I arrived, patting me on the shoulders.
“Our genius illusionist. Thank you so much. There hasn’t been any progress so far, not even a tiny bit. It’s like a dream that she can maintain the spell even for a few seconds.”
“Don’t flatter me.”
“It’s not flattery! Besides, I don’t flatter just anyone. It’s you. How do I look to you?”
“Well, she’s a type I’ve never seen among knights, and she’s also a first-time illusionist, so it’s fascinating how she got here.”
He made a grumbling sound and uncomfortably rubbed his neck for some unknown reason after hearing me.
“…Actually, I brought her here as a special recruit because she can use the illusion spell. She’s the daughter of a Viscount, you know.”
He glanced at me out of the corner of his eye.
I smirked because I knew why he was acting that way. You see, Hazel Love may be a genius illusionist, but she was a commoner, so she worked hard and passed the exams to get here, while Fay Martin became a special recruit.
He was afraid I might feel bad, so I pretended not to notice and kept my voice low.
I murmured.
“Hmm, a special recruit. I guess I should treat her more respectfully.”
“You don’t have to. Honestly, even if you try to help her, it might be impossible, but still, thank you so much. I might have to train her again at some point.”
“It hasn’t even been a day yet.”
“It was just a thought. It’s tough, isn’t it? I’ve arranged a carriage, so you can go comfortably to the hotel. Do you need anything else? Just tell me. I’ll listen to anything!”
I tapped Dylan’s bicep and replied.
“I don’t need anything else for now. You lent me the carriage, so that’s enough.”
After making plans for another appointment tomorrow, I got into the carriage Dylan had lent me and headed to the hotel.
“Woof, woof, whine…”
Scratch, scratch!
“Whine, whine!”
The pitiful whimpering of a puppy was irritating Kairos. Just a while ago, a bundle of reddish-brown fur squeezed through the narrow opening of the door.
Exhausted from several sleepless nights, he was resting on the couch, leaning his body against it with his arms covering his eyes. Despite being a four-legged creature that walked, its gait seemed oddly clumsy. It was quite small and cute, reminding him of Hazel, who seemed like she would be hurt if touched too much.
So, he left it alone, and now it couldn’t even go out through the narrow opening it entered from, continuously scratching and pawing at the door. It spun around in one spot and again, scratch!
It repeated the scratching.
Already in a bad mood, Kairos was getting frustrated.
“Such a bother.”
Now, even a puppy appeared to torment him.
“….”
Hazel really loved animals. Dogs, cats, squirrels, rabbits—anything with fur. Ah, did she find snakes a bit scary?
Anyway, she said she loved any furry creature. In fact, during one of their dates, whenever they encountered a cat, she would always greet it, and once, she even helped a stray kitten reunite with its lonely mother.
She had a gloomy face when they had to leave after a few hours together. When he asked if she wanted to raise the cat, she said it wasn’t the right time yet, as loving something and taking responsibility for its life were different things.
She said they should think about it when things were a bit more stable, and they were better prepared.
Since then, he hadn’t seen many animals around.
“Whine, whine…”
Scratch!
“Sigh.”
Kairos, who couldn’t seem to find any peace, let out a sigh of frustration.
Strangely, the sound seemed to be getting closer, and now it was right beneath him, scratching and pawing at the couch as if asking to be lifted. It jumped up and down, whimpering. Ignoring it, he closed his eyes, but then he heard a firm knocking sound on the door.
“Master, I have something to report.”
It was Sid.
“Come in.”
Kairos spoke with his eyes closed. Sid, who entered the room with a nod, paused.
“Oh, were you resting? Should I come back later?”
“Forget it. Give me your report.”
Kairos said while still lying on the couch with his back against it. Sid always responded whether he was sitting at his desk, standing, or lying down.
“Woof!”
As the puppy jumped on him this time, Sid was startled and stepped back.
“No, Popo!”
Sid exclaimed in horror.
“Why are you here? Master, I apologize. I’ll take him out quickly and come back!”
“Never mind, leave it be and finish your report.”
As Kairos spoke, he widened his eyes.
“Really? Yes, understood!”
Sid found himself absentmindedly scratching Popo’s back, who was now whimpering and trying to be held. Although it still seemed to be searching for its owner, the whimpering had significantly decreased.
It was a mystery how the puppy ended up in his master’s study.
Sid began his report, sweating profusely. Fortunately, there were no major issues to report today. It would have been better if it weren’t for Popo. Throughout the report, he tried to calm Popo by patting it gently.
“…Then, please rest, master.”
Despite the fact that it was an ordinary report, it was more challenging than usual. Eventually, Sid left with a bow.
That evening, Sid once again gave up on going home.
He had been working late through the night for several days. The reason was simple: his master never rested, so as a subordinate, Sid couldn’t possibly rest either. It felt excessive, but he didn’t want to quit either. Betraying the master meant certain death.
At least, that was how he saw it, partly because of his own nature and partly because the master was the one who saved him.
It was he who first pledged his loyalty and offered himself to serve until his death if the master would accept him. And there was no other place that took care of him like this.
‘When is the captive coming back?’
Although it was supposed to take about a week, judging by what was happening now, it felt like it would take at least a month. Suddenly, he had a feeling that it had been a long time, so he quickly turned his head to check the date.
“Only three days have passed if I include today…”
Oh, my goodness.
He thought it had been at least a week, but it had only been that short. He realized how uncomfortable his life had been during this time.
“When will she come back?”
She was busy in Elkard. Even though he asked Nigella, she said Hazel was too busy and couldn’t even properly explore the Capital. In the meantime, she went to the temple to pray. She must have offered a prayer for his master.
Even on regular days, she was worried when his master came home late because of his schedule.
Since this was the first time she was away, it must be even more difficult. She probably wants to finish her work quickly because she wants to see his master every day. She must have been unable to sleep properly and was irritated…
“Huh?”
A foolish exclamation came out of his mouth. Now that he thought about it, it seemed similar to his master’s condition.
Sid scratched his head in confusion.
“No way. How could it be…?”
Sid’s thoughts were absurd. It couldn’t be true unless he had gone crazy.
…That wouldn’t be the case, right?
“Right? Popo.”
Sid spoke to the puppy that he was taking care of while his colleague was out on a business trip. The puppy, who had fallen asleep in his arms, opened its eyes drowsily.
“Woof, woof, whine…”
His expression crumpled. It had been sleeping so peacefully, but he unintentionally called it and woke it up.
Today has really been a tiring day in many ways.

Hehehehehe. It’s fun seeing the light bulbs go on gradually around Kairos and Hazel. Of course Hazel will be the last to know, but Kairos will probably be second to last…
Thank you for the chapter! I enjoy this one a lot.
