Chapter 33
Behind Dylan, a short, lemon-colored head of hair swayed in and out of view. It looked like it was Fay.
I tilted my head with curiosity.
“Let’s introduce each other. Fay, this is Hazel Love, my former colleague and your academy senior. Hazel, meet Fay Martin. She joined the Order just three months ago.”
With a brief introduction, the illusionist called Fay revealed herself.
Were we from the same academy? I only knew Hazel as the top graduate, though I had no knowledge of her juniors.
I raised an eyebrow in surprise.
Fay had lemon-colored hair neatly tied into two braids, and her orange eyes stood out. She seemed far from the image of a knight, even her training uniform appeared excessively large. Surely, the attire of the knights, including the uniforms, would be tailor-made. Yet, it seemed to be at least two sizes too big.
Well, as long as she was skilled, I supposed it didn’t matter.
Fay had a round face, with plump cheeks and a short chin, giving her a youthful appearance. Perhaps that was why she felt like an adorable younger sister, even though I had no siblings of my own.
I extended my hand towards Fay Martin.
Since I had decided to help, I should do so sincerely. Besides, leaving abruptly would leave me feeling uneasy.
“Nice to meet you, I’m Hazel Love.”
Then, Fay Martin’s face turned as red as a plum.
“I, I’m Fey Martin! I’ve heard a lot about you, senior! The legendary genius illusionist… um! I’ve always wanted to meet you! I admire you!”
Oh boy. I chuckled awkwardly.
“Ah, I’m not that impressive. I’m not active anymore, either, so you can feel free around me.”
“N-No, that can’t be! You’re my senior…!”
I intended to ease her tension with my words, but it seemed only to make her more nervous. Awkwardly, as I shifted my gaze to Dylan for no apparent reason, he shrugged and turned his body towards Fay.
“Fay, can you perform your illusion spell in front of Hazel, as we discussed earlier?”
“Ah, r-right now?”
When Fay Martin appeared greatly confused, I glanced at Dylan.
“I already told her that the great illusionist would become an instructor.”
“… What’s so great about me?”
I replied.
Dylan casually said something embarrassing, making me cough in response.
“She couldn’t even sleep properly after hearing those words yesterday.”
Fay, standing nearby, vigorously nodded in agreement, her eyes wide with a mix of awe and anticipation.
“Y-Yes!”
“Anyway, Hazel needs to see your abilities to have a sense of your level, right? Isn’t that right, Hazel?”
“Of course. Feel free to do it. Do you have any particular talents?”
Then, Fay started to visibly panic.
“Ah… May I, um, have a moment to prepare?”
…Prepare?
This piqued my curiosity even further. Unlike conventional magic, illusion spells did not require prior preparation. Engaging in any form of preparation in front of others was highly dangerous, as we need to be discreet.
Observing her intense state of tension, I thought that it must be a mental preparation. So once again, I nodded in agreement, willingly granting her the time she needed.
“Sure, take all the time you need.”
I replied calmly.
“Thank you!”
Fay took a deep breath, her face filled with tension. The other knights, familiar with such moments, maintained a respectful distance and settled down to observe. Meanwhile, me and Dylan waited patiently.
About ten minutes passed.
“I-I’m ready now!”
Fay announced, her expression still taut. Taking two steps back, I nodded in acknowledgment.
“I will handle the release, so concentrate on confining me with your illusion spell.”
I became extremely tense, wondering how terrifying of an illusion she was trying to show me.
It was at that moment when I was subconsciously focused on not to instinctively deflecting the spell, that our eyes met, and the surroundings were engulfed in flames as the terrain changed. Yet, to my surprise, there was no searing heat. It was purely an illusion, and everything seemed to be fine… so what could possibly go wrong?
…That was what I thought.
“Aaaah! Mommy, it’s scary!”
Huh…?
In an instant, with an abrupt scream, the surroundings snapped back to normal, escaping the clutches of the illusion spell in less than two seconds. When I gazed ahead in bewilderment, the knights emitted collective sighs of exasperation.
‘…What on earth just happened?’
Up ahead, Fay was waving her hands frantically.
“What… was that?”
“I-I’m sorry. Let me try again!”
Fay apologized profusely, bowing repeatedly.
Only then did I realize that Fay Martin had been incredibly nervous and had released the spell.
“It’s alright. Mistakes happen. Take your time.”
I reassured her, although unsure if such mishaps were even possible. After all, I had always regarded myself as the illusionist—except, of course, for the presence of Fay Martin before me now.
Summoning her courage, Fay made a few more attempts at the spell.
“Aahh! Ugh! Mommy…”
Like a fledgling bird flapping its wings for the first time, she waved her arms in the distance, resembling someone urgently attempting to extinguish a fire.
Initially, I thought it was a joke.
While I wasn’t particularly fond of pranks, everyone had their own style of humour. Still, there were tears welling up in the corners of Fay’s eyes. The trembling, the way she shuddered… she truly seemed terrified.
“Wait a moment.”
Amidst the collective sighs of the knights, I approached Fay. Startled, she turned her gaze towards me, tears threatening to spill over.
“I-I’m sorry. I’m just a little scared.”
Fay stammered, her lip caught between her teeth, her body trembling. I raised the corners of my mouth, trying to maintain a composed expression.
“It’s okay. It can happen. Take a break and we can try again, alright?”
“R-Really?”
“Yes, go and have a drink of water or something.”
I patted Fay on the shoulder, and she bowed her head slightly.
I could still feel her shoulders trembling with fear. Unbelievable… she was frightened by her own illusion spell. How could she seek an illusionist to dispel the illusion when she herself was the source of it?
This was beyond something I could handle.
Having done my best to calm Fay down, I turned around and bestowed a bright smile upon Dylan.
“Sir Dylan Banker?”
I called out, and Dylan, who had been shaking his head, straightened his posture.
“Huh?”
“Can we talk for a moment?”
Once we were in the office, I firmly grasped Dylan’s arm.
“Are you kidding me, playing a prank on me?”
“No! I would never do that.”
Dylan jumped up.
“Then?”
“Seriously, I really need your help…”
“Hey!”
I exclaimed, almost akin to a lion’s roar. He flinched, his shoulders quivering.
“Sorry for not telling you in advance, but there’s no other illusionist I know besides you. You know that all the knights are the same. I thought maybe you could come up with a solution if you saw her…”
“Just send her back to the academy. At least the professors can teach her there. I can’t help, Dylan.”
“Ah, Hazel.”
“I thought her illusion spells weren’t sophisticated enough, or she struggled with mana manipulation. How can I solve that when I’m not even a teacher?”
“Oh, please. We have a large-scale extermination coming up. It’s going to last for about three months this time.”
“….”
“You know, even if it’s not this issue, you’re going to be away throughout the autumn. Without an illusionist, there’s no way it would last three months. It could take up to six months easily. Please help me, okay? Hazel.”
I pressed on my temples and tried to speak calmly.
“You think I’m capable of solving this? Oh, honestly, even if it’s not me. If we hadn’t crossed paths, you would have found someone else, right?”
Dylan flinched again.
“Well, why? Why do you have that look on your face? Is there something else you’re hiding?”
“Actually, His Highness…”
“What about the Prince?”
“I think he’s planning to officially summon you for this upcoming large-scale expedition… I-I think.”
He slowly stepped back, trailing off at the end of his sentence.
“What?”
