Chapter 28
A little while later, the table was full of desserts that Dylan had ordered.
Despite intending to have just one piece of cake, it turned into a calamity of selecting items from the menu one after another. While it was not as elaborate as what Noah would make, the fresh, fruity scent tantalized my nose as I took a bite.
“By the way, did you have a good time at the Guild Association yesterday?”
I looked up as I sliced my cake in half with a fork.
“Well, somewhat. It was quite enjoyable.”
I replied.
There was one annoying incident, but it was resolved quickly, and I mostly remembered the pleasant moments. Contrary to the initial expectation of the event being somewhat tense, it turned out cozy, and we even parted by pledging to help each other regardless of region.
“You’re impressive.”
“What’s with the sudden praise?”
“It’s something I’ve been meaning to say, but when you suddenly said you were leaving for the countryside, I thought you’d be back soon. After all, you hadn’t left Elkard before becoming a knight.”
“Ah, yeah. That’s true.”
I sheepishly put a forkful of cake into my mouth.
“But to achieve success within a year and then to venture into that… who could have guessed?”
“Just sticking to it will lead to success.”
“Is it that easy? Anyway, when will you actually introduce your husband?”
Unknowingly, my hand that had been moving the fork slowed down.
“My… husband… Well, he’s been quite busy.”
“What could he be so busy with? Seriously, who is he? Now that I think about it, when you sent letters, you still used your original name.”
Ah, sharp as always.
The day I discovered the existence of Kairos, when I found out that the surname engraved beside Hazel Love’s name in the documents I had discovered wasn’t Edith but Hadid, I thought I was going to faint.
Noah had first handed me documents with our names, Hazel Love Edith and Noah Love Edith, written exactly like that. Sometimes, I wrote my old name out of habit, but since then, I’ve been cautious not to write my new name, fearing someone might recognize it.
“I just wrote it like that out of habit. After all, that’s how we used to address each other during the Knight Order days.”
“Hurry up and introduce him. Anyway, I’m genuinely curious.”
“I… later! Much later. My husband is really busy. Oh, I’m done eating. Shall we go now?”
Saying so, I hurriedly got up from my seat.
“Got it. Let’s go, then.”
Dylan looked at me incredulously as he handed me a napkin. What had I spilled? I accepted it and quickly wiped my mouth, noticing a bit of cream.
“I’ll give you a new one later.”
“It’s fine.”
Dylan chuckled and shook his head.
As we got up and left the dessert house, we got into Dylan’s carriage and headed for the palace. The familiar scenery passed by outside the window. Actually, if you looked at it closely, I’ve spent more time in Ferrarium than I did in the capital.
Strangely, gazing at the capital’s landscape made me feel as comfortable as I would in my hometown.
“Missed it quite a bit, huh?”
Dylan asked as I had been staring at the scenery for a while.
“Just… It’s been a really long time, I guess.”
“You’re considering coming back to the capital? Is Ferrarium not comfortable?”
“Compared to here, it’s not as comfortable. But even in its small size, it has everything. First of all, the people are all great.”
“Well, it’s not an exaggeration to say that Ferrarium is the most peaceful village in Elkium.”
“Maybe not so much anymore.”
“Well, then, how about returning to the life of a knight… Never mind.”
Dylan stopped himself from continuing as I gave him a slightly stern look.
The carriage moved diligently.
“Long time, huh?”
As we got out of the carriage, I caught a last glimpse of the entrance to the Knight Order training grounds. Memories from that time when I had submitted my resignation letter and stayed at the Knight Order’s dormitory until I could see the prince flooded back to me.
It was the day when I had thrown the resignation letter forcefully.
“Hey, brave girl! You don’t wear a uniform? Are you off duty today?”
It was the path to the office where Jed Terry Elkium, the male lead and my superior, as well as the prince, worked.
Dylan Banker, with whom I joined the White Dragon Knight Order on the same day, hugged my shoulder and spoke.
He had always tied his red shoulder-length hair back, and his face bore a scar running across his black eyes. What was the story behind that scar again? Was it from the final graduation exam at the academy, during the demon subjugation battle, that he said he got it?
I also, or rather, before I was transmigrated, Hazel Love had also participated in that demon subjugation battle.
Out of nowhere, advanced-level demons attacked, turning the place into chaos, and Hazel used illusion to prevent a major disaster. If it weren’t for her, he wouldn’t just have a scar, but he might have lost an entire eye.
It was also the reason why she came to the attention of the male lead, the prince, and got the opportunity to take the Imperial Knight Order exam.
“I am off duty.”
“But why are you here?”
“I’m quitting the Knight Order starting today.”
I swung the resignation letter in the pure white envelope as I spoke. Dylan Banker burst into cheerful laughter upon hearing this.
“Well thought out. Yeah, since you’re quitting this time…”
His words trailed off, and at the same time, his hand that had been around my shoulder disappeared. When I turned around, I was met with his shocked expression.
“What are you doing? Weren’t you going to the office?”
“You’re quitting?”
“Yeah.”
“Is this a joke?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“It feels like it’s time to quit.”
Dylan quickly approached before grabbing both of my shoulders.
“What nonsense is this? Quitting? It’s not like you to quit! You were even determined to become the head of the Knight Order.”
I flicked his hands off my shoulders and chuckled.
“Why are you so surprised? I said I’m quitting when it’s time to quit. The subjugations are getting tiresome, and I want some rest. At this rate, I won’t even be able to get married and just grow old and die, so yeah.”
I started walking again, prompting him to quickly catch up.
“Don’t joke around like that. You’re not the type to quit something like this. You’ve even said you’ll become the head of the Knight Order.”
I hesitated for a moment and then walked more vigorously.
“How can I become the head of the Knight Order when His Highness the Prince is around? I mean, it’s just nonsense.”
“Are you really quitting? You didn’t mention this until yesterday!”
Dylan quickened his pace, moving ahead and blocking my path. He extended his arms to prevent me from passing, causing me to stop and raise my head to look at him.
“Can you move aside? I’m busy.”
“I don’t understand the sudden change of heart overnight, I can’t comprehend it. Why did you do it?”
He was determined to find out the exact reason for this.
Dylan wasn’t clueless about why I was acting like this. The academy we graduated from, from admission to graduation, was known for its great difficulty, and the camaraderie among their peers shone particularly bright.
To the extent that there was a saying that even when you’re old, if you’re a peer, you’d jump up to help out.
However, Hazel Love faced challenges throughout her time in the Knight Order.
The transparent barrier that nobility created was something I, as a commoner, could feel. That barrier had tried to crumble me down many times. Due to that, I had wondered several times whether I should quit. It could be said that my life would have ended several times over due to that struggle.
“I’m from a commoner background.”
I murmured.
“Hey, what’s the fuss about your background? Right now, you’re a knight, and you’re not someone who would be bothered by such things.”
“It did bother me.”
“…What?”
His surprised expression turned into a bewildered one as he heard my response.
“It bothered me.”
Dylan, who had been blinking his eyes, suddenly burst into anger.
“If anyone says something about your background, I’ll beat them up! Is that okay? Will that work? Hazel…”
“I’ve thought about it a lot and made this decision. Quitting the Knight Order doesn’t mean my life is over. I started feeling averse to going on subjugations at some point. I’m tired of the daily piled-up tasks. I want to rest a bit.”
Moreover, the timing was right.
The months from spring to summer were a relatively calm period without many subjugation missions. This was the right time to quit; otherwise, it would be challenging to replace members during the busy summer, causing headaches.
So, it had to be done!
Today! Right now!
“….”
Dylan, who was full of energy and ready to thoroughly investigate the Knight Order, hesitated but soon turned quiet. I raised my hand and lightly tapped his shoulder.
“I’ll come to visit. Is that okay?”
“Okay, but at least come with me to the office for now.”
“Sure, do as you like.”
Thankfully, there was no further argument. The next challenge was to face the Prince, Jed Terry Elkium. As we reached the door to where he was, Dylan grasped the doorknob first and spoke.
“It won’t be easy.”
Then, he knocked on the door.
“Come in.”
I nodded, and Dylan turned the doorknob.
“Your Highness, hello.”
Prince Jed, who was reviewing stacks of documents on his desk, stopped his pen and raised his head.
“Ah, Dame Love. What’s the matter? Sir Banker is here, too.”

At the start of the chapter it feels like a part is missing since the last chapter. It goes from her leaving the guild party, to being with Dylan with desserts almost as if they are in the middle of conversation
