Chapter 27
The man introduced himself as Carrion, a noble who proudly claimed to run a prominent guild in Tenegal.
Tenegal, the vast plains of Elkium, lay between the northern Sergal and the southern Castalt, a region entirely different from Ferrarium. There was no reason to create unnecessary interactions with him since there was no business for me in that direction should I decide to flee.
Besides, boasting about his nobility seemed somewhat ludicrous. After all, the ability to establish a guild was only bestowed upon wealthy commoners and nobles.
The number of commoners, including myself, was scarce, and even high-ranking nobles had no more than a mercenary guild each, excluding other kinds of guild.
Today’s gathering was for a common purpose, yet it was customary not to overtly showcase it. As a newcomer, I was still in the process of understanding the rules. How could a person who had attended this event multiple times not know this?
“Well then, let’s exchange greetings and part ways. We’re here in the same circle, so we might meet again anytime.”
Rham added amiably.
“We’ll probably be back at the hotel around ten o’clock, right?”
I asked Nigella.
“Likely. Are you tired?”
“No, I think Noah will be waiting. I’ll probably head to the lounge later to contact him.”
I conversed briefly with Nigella while completely ignoring that side of the room.
“In this case, since it’s quite regrettable to leave for another place now, may I at least have the pleasure of knowing the name of the beautiful lady? Running a guild must entail numerous challenges, and I’d be more than willing to offer my assistance. We could have a separate conversation if you wish.”
That was when it happened.
An unpleasant sensation touched my shoulder. It wasn’t just a touch; it felt like a spider crawling as his fingers brushed against my shoulder.
The gazes of those around me turned fierce, and my smile that had been forming came to a halt.
When I turned my head, Carrion, the man who called himself that, was grinning at me. As if brushing against me wasn’t enough, he even grabbed and held onto me, his actions blatantly intrusive.
With a sharp sound, his hand tightened its grip.
“Ugh!”
Before I could even move, Nigella had forcefully slapped Carrion’s hand away.
“Do not display disrespectful behavior towards my boss. Don’t lay your hands without permission either.”
Carrion’s face turned grim as he held onto my hand. Thanks to Nigella, my urge to react subsided, tempering the unpleasant sensation.
“Well, I only meant to make a good connection, that’s all. Why are you so sensitive?”
“Unless it’s an urgent situation, assistance should be sought by the other party first. And that’s not sensitivity, it’s discomfort. If you haven’t learned that yet, it’s time to apologize and leave. This gathering is for mutual camaraderie, causing a scene won’t bode well, right?”
Eventually, Ted stood up.
“Ted’s words are correct. This is a meeting of mercenary guild representatives, not a confrontation ground. Causing trouble is not appreciated. You should apologize to her here.”
Rham added support, causing Carrion’s face to flush.
“Did I ask you? It’s because she was slow to respond! It’s because of that! Who do I think I am?”
With these words, he glared at me with reddened cheeks. I must clarify that I hadn’t uttered a single word or taken any action, yet nonetheless, his displeased gaze was directed at me.
“Quite the impressive person, you are.”
“Now, you respond. With the intimidating atmosphere around here, what else could one do? If you’re fine with it, lady, could we have a separate conversation over there? I’d like to share insights on guild management.”
I smiled sweetly, facing him.
“I’m sorry, but I don’t think I have the time today. Rather, over here.”
Then, I gestured towards one of Carrion’s shoulders. It was where he had grabbed my shoulder before.
“Shoulder? What… Argh!”
Simultaneously, his face turned pale.
“S-s-scorpion?! Ahhh!”
Suddenly, after hitting his own shoulder, he frantically checked inside his clothes, appearing panicked. The gazes of those at the table became curious. I pretended not to notice and shrugged my shoulders.
In an instant, the room grew noisy as everyone’s attention shifted to him.
“Scorpion, venom! Oh, get away! Get away! Help, please! The scorpion, it’s… help!”
Thud!
With a loud sound, he collapsed to the floor.
“Why… is he like that?”
“Help! Get it off me! I’m not okay! Please, someone remove this scorpion!”
Carrion was now lying on the floor, rolling around frantically, swatting his arms and legs, and trembling in panic. He kicked and shook as if trying to get rid of something.
Eventually, feeling helpless, I raised my hand and called over one of the association staff.
“Sir, it seems like something’s wrong. Can you help?”
“I’ll call a doctor to check.”
“Thank you.”
The staff, along with the servers, led Carrion away.
“Are you okay, boss?”
Nigella asked me.
I nodded while watching Carrion being carried away.
“Yeah, I’m fine.”
The surrounding gazes slowly dispersed, and the room quietened.
“…Is he insane?”
“Why would he suddenly do that?”
Rham and Hermes shook their heads in disbelief. Unlike the other tables, this table had gathered particularly formidable individuals.
Fortunately, it seemed they hadn’t noticed anything.
“Well, he can figure his own way out. It’s appreciated. Even garbage gathers in places like this. Wasn’t it unpleasant? If it were a different setting, he would have been thrown out.”
Ted inquired with a concerned expression.
“Are you alright? Seems like he had too much to drink.”
“Still, that doesn’t excuse his rudeness.”
Lena scolded him.
“Well, in the course of work, there are ups and downs. If you focus on every single detail, you can’t manage a guild, can you?”
I replied, causing the faces around me to relax, and laughter spread once again.
“The boss of Soul Guild, you have a positive outlook in life.”
“Thank you for the compliment.”
As I smiled and took a sip of the remaining champagne, Nigella muttered curses under her breath, wiping my shoulder with a damp cloth. Perhaps Carrion, even after leaving here, would struggle against thousands of scorpions throughout the night.
That was what you get when you push too far.
It was an unintended consequence.
Thankfully, Carrion, who had caused a commotion, didn’t return to the banquet hall until we were ready to leave. Thanks to that, I gathered plenty of information about various situations.
In particular, I learned about a small village in Castalt that would be perfect for emigrating or escaping.
