Chapter 44 – Part 1
‘Why did this happen?’
Viscount Rochelle couldn’t calm his anger after he was imprisoned. It would have been just a regular meeting had it not been for the Grand Duke’s shocking statement that his daughter would be the successor.
The Grand Duke often left his seat at every regular meeting, so he was often the one who led the meeting. He took it for granted. Because he was the Grand Duke’s uncle, he thought that manipulating the ledger and using Descartes’ assets were the price of his devotion to the family.
“I shouldn’t have touched the mine. I should have been a little more careful.”
He thought that he had gone crazy about some woman and threw everything away, but was he just watching in silence?
‘But even so, how can you humiliate me? Even going as far as locking me up like this? How can you do something like this?’
Viscount Rochelle murmured under his breath, “What’s with that shrew?”
Kiik.
“…!”
At that moment, as the heavy iron doors and the cold sound of shoes echoed, Viscount Rochelle stopped his thoughts. Every time he heard the sound of the shoes, he felt as if every hair on his body was standing up.
It wasn’t long before a person’s shadow hung over his head. The darkness inside the prison grew worse.
“Viscount Rochelle.”
The viscount flinched, then deflated in relief. It was the Grand Duke’s aide, not the man himself.
“Wh-where is the head?”
’I just need to get out of here. I can go back to how it used to be anytime as long as I show that I am disciplining myself and showing restraint.’
“Ah,” Dante laughed softly, “Something urgent suddenly came up for His Excellency.”
Dante recalled what had just happened.
[‘I like Pihne the most! Let’s eat together, Aaron.’]
This was what the little Lady said after she found Calpihne’s picnic basket, leaving behind His Excellency. Thanks to this, Cullen’s feet, which were about to head to the prison after having an affectionate father and daughter meeting, were frozen on the spot.
Joining them, Calpihne saw His Excellency’s strange expression and said:
[‘This… maybe preposterous of me. But would Your Excellency like to have a snack with the lady? It’s sunny today.’ ]
To his surprise, he readily accepted the offer.
Thanks to this, Viscount Rochelle’s disposal was passed on to Dante, and he came alone like this. Of course, that didn’t change his disposal he would be given—because his punishment had already been decided.
“Dante, I’m asking you this favor since you’re close to His Excellency. Can’t you tell His Excellency that I did a lot of reflection, and I will need time to clear up the misunderstanding?”
Contrary to the words ‘asking for a favor’, his posture was arrogant. He was perhaps relieved that His Excellency didn’t come in person.
Dante smiled softly. “Rejected. The viscount’s punishment has already been decided.”
Viscount Rochelle frowned. “No, there must be a misunderstanding! What my daughter said were strange things she heard somewhere. Do you think it is alright to listen to a kid’s words and treat me like this? I am the head’s uncle!”
Tch
“I don’t know about that. His Excellency has given me two decisions and the right to decide.”
“Two?”
“Yes. One is dying here.”
“…Wh-what about the other one?” Viscount Rochelle asked in a hurry.
“Be deprived of all your properties and titles before getting banished.”
“…What?”
“I will give you five minutes to decide. I have to hurry up and join the tea party.”
“Wh-what?”
“That’s why you shouldn’t have been unconstrained. Why do you pull on your trouser leg*? Didn’t you know that His Excellency didn’t close his eyes just because he didn’t know anything?”
(T/N: pulling on your trouser leg=doing something you knew the consequences of/doing something that will put you in danger)
Viscount Rochelle grabbed the bars and shook them. “I, I was wrong! I will tell His Excellency myself!! So let me see him just for a moment. Please?”
As he listened, Dante trembled in impatience.
“Please decide quickly. I’m busy. Right! Your children will return on a carriage this afternoon—they’ll be very safe.”
’So, please decide. Or I will choose for you.’
Only then did the viscount realize that there was no way he could turn back on every single mistake he had made.
Dante’s sharp eyes were fixed on Viscount Rochelle. The latter’s eyes darkened.
