Chapter 73
Cahill cradled Holly in his arms, listening to the rhythmic sound of her breathing. He gently lowered his head, observing her peaceful slumber as her hair cascaded over her face. Carefully, he brushed her flowing locks behind her ears.
“You sleep beautifully.”
A tender smile graced his lips.
Cahill gently patted her shoulder, hoping to lull her into a deeper sleep. A rustling noise broke the tranquility, causing his sharp gaze to shift towards the source.
“Your Highness!”
Startled, her body tensed at the sound of Adam’s voice reverberating through the clearing.
Seeing her like that, Cahill held her tighter, providing comfort and protection within his embrace. In the meanwhile, Adam stiffened when he belatedly saw her asleep. He then spoke, his voice hushed yet conveying the urgency of his words.
“A contact has arrived from the Kingdom.”
Cahill narrowed his brows.
“Send a rough reply.”
“Tha, that…”
Adam’s gaze shifted towards Holly, who stirred and rubbed her eyes upon awakening, while Cahill expressed his dissatisfaction with a click of his tongue, tenderly caressing her cheek.
“I think you should see it for yourself.”
Fully awake and grasping the gravity of the situation, Holly cast a concerned glance at Cahill. It became clear to her that the elder of Laurieue had likely disclosed the matter of her being the ‘Prince’s lover’ to Cahill’s mother, the King of Aisen.
“Holly.”
Unlike Adam, Cahill gazed at her with a softer gaze.
“What?”
“Call the spirit.”
She tilted her head puzzledly as Cahill was staring at her with earnest eyes. Still, without hesitation, she called out the name of the spirit.
“Shiver!”
A light breeze ruffled Holly’s hair. Soon, a spirit the size of a puppy appeared and it lunged at her before rubbing its head against her skirt.
“It must have been a wind spirit.”
After confirming Shiver’s appearance, Adam spoke in a moved voice.
“Can Adam see it now?”
“Yes. The spirit revealed by the contractor’s call is visible to ordinary people.”
Adam nodded, answering in a voice full of emotion. All the while, Holly couldn’t take her eyes off Shiver. Cahill, who looked at it disapprovingly, lifted her chin with his hand.
“If anyone approaches, don’t hesitate to blow them away.”
When his gaze then shifted from her to the direction where George left, Holly then understood why Cahill asked her to summon the spirit.
“Yes.”
Even as Cahill followed Adam, he continued to look back at her with regret. Her heart trembled at his sullen look.
“Go quickly. I’ll be playing with Shiver.”
Holly, who had hardened her heart, motioned with her hand. Cahill reluctantly disappeared into the forest, his shoulders slumped. At the same time, Shiver perked up and panted, happily wagging its tail as if it delighted in being called by its name.
‘Is it a dog or a cat…’
Holly raised her finger and scratched Shiver’s chin. Shiver turned over, showing off its belly.
‘It’s like a real dog.’
Holly laughed and scratched Shiver’s belly.
“By the way, how should I give you energy?”
With the question, Shiver turned back upright.
— Allow me.
Then, it buried its nose in her palm. Holly didn’t understand what it was saying, and her eyes went wide.
— Allow me.
Shiver’s voice rang louder in her head.
“…I will allow it.”
As she spoke, she felt something flow through her veins and escape through her palms against Shiver.
— Remember this feeling.
Holly closed her eyes. The sensation started near the base of her heart. However, the energy that was flowing suddenly stopped, and she opened her eyes and gazed at Shiver.
— This is enough for every day. More than this if you use your strength.
Shiver said, spinning around her.
— Holly has a big vessel. I won’t be lacking.
She could feel that Shiver was in a good mood.
— The vessel will continue to grow as it is emptied and filled.
“Then, let’s practice every day. Will you help me?”
Amidst Shiver’s joyous hopping, Holly’s attention was caught by the rustling sound of bushes parting nearby. She raised her head to see who was approaching.
“Come quickl—”
Her face, which was colored with delight, was contorted when she saw the new face in the bush.
“Are you alone?”
Scanning the area, he noticed that Holly was standing there alone, a mischievous grin formed on George’s lips as if he imagined something.
Growl—
Suddenly, a low growl echoed through the air. Shiver positioned itself in front of Holly, its teeth exposed as it warned George. The trembling leaves of the surrounding trees added an ominous touch to the scene.
“…Don’t we get along well?”
George admired, staring at Shiver at Holly’s feet, surprised.
“But isn’t it too much to threaten each other?”
Holly narrowed her brows at George’s words. She was deeply displeased at his words. Her fists clenched. When she was being harassed at Halidem, she had to put up with it many times for the sake of the boss who took care of him.
‘…I don’t have to do that anymore. That person is not a guest, and I am not an employee.’
Holly opened her eyes and looked at George.
“If you come a little closer, the spirit will bite it.”
As her eyes went between his legs, George flinched at the threat he could not ignore. Still, he didn’t give up easily, probably thinking that her being alone was now an opportunity.
“Don’t be like that.”
He smirked and took a step forward.
“Anyway, his appearance and mine are not so different…”
‘…Does he really think so?’
Holly let out a dumbfounded laugh.
“Ah! Are you a person who lusts for power? Then, it’s better to be by my side. I am the man who will become the next elder, and in Laurieue, a high-ranking Elementalist is treated like the head of a family.”
Seeing a confident smile spread across George’s face as he spoke, Holly’s stomach churned as he continued to speak.
“You never know. Your body will suit me better than him.”
When George’s gaze went over her body, Holly frowned in displeasure.
“Take a guess…”
“If you say one more word, I will attack you even if you don’t come close.”
Sensing her anger, Shiver raised its fur. As a sharp wind clawed George’s cheeks, the red lines on his white cheeks became clearer and clearer.
Holly’s eyes widened in surprise that she had hurt someone with just a thought.
‘I definitely warned him.’
But soon, she made up her mind.
George ran a finger across his tingling cheek. Seeing blood on his fingers, he contorted his face.
“I was trying to be nice…”
Holly’s fists clenched tightly as she confronted George, an elf known for his strong connection with the spirits. With a nervous expression on her face, she stared at him, her gaze filled with intensity.
“What kind of atmosphere is this?”
Just as the tension was building, a voice interrupted the confrontation. Holly lifted her head, turning her attention to the source of the sound. It was Cahill, finally arriving on the scene. Holly’s cheeks flushed.
“What else did that bastard do?”
Cahill, disinterested in hearing any explanations, shifted his gaze to George and snapped his fingers. Thin ice emerged from the ground, enveloping George’s shoes and freezing them in place.
“Nothing happened. There was also a Shiver…”
As Holly spoke, she immediately remembered how Shiver stood in George’s way. She crouched down and gazed into Shiver’s eyes.
“Good job.”
Saying so, she stroked its head. Shiver seemed to feel good, closed its eyes and purred at her touch.
“I shouldn’t have left.”
Cahill pursed his lips and grumbled like a pouting child. As he looked at Shiver with envious eyes, Holly stood up and gave him a worried look.
“Are you really okay?”
She couldn’t help but wonder what the contents of the letter might be. Was it a message urging Cahill to return immediately? Or perhaps it was similar to Adam’s scolding, insisting that he break up with her?
The thought that the letter from the King, Cahill’s mother, could be about Holly herself weighed on her mind.
“It was nothing.”
Perhaps out of consideration for her worried expression, Cahill shook his head resolutely. He then shifted his gaze towards George, staring at him intently before spitting out his words.
“We have a lot of firewood, so we need a lot of hands. Come and help.”
His expression frowned at the tone of command, but Cahill’s presence was undeniably compelling. In the end, George closed his mouth and followed him.
“What do you mean firewood… you can’t even light a fire?”
Left alone, Holly muttered with an absurd expression.
