Chapter 2
“Can’t you just shut up and leave?”
Belissa retorted, and Countess Briana, her face full of dissatisfaction, left the room.
Watching the door slam shut, Belissa smirked.
For the past month, Frederick hadn’t visited her even once.
Judging by Countess Briana and the maids’ reactions, it seemed that only Belissa had been unaware of the relationship between Eleanor and Frederick.
Belissa gnashed her teeth. Blood erupted in her mouth again.
As Belissa tried to force herself up, her necklace slipped off her neck, and then,
“Throw this necklace to the fire when you need it, when you’re truly desperate.”
“I don’t know what you mean, Mother. I’m sleepy.”
“Listen well, Belissa. When you feel like dying, throw this necklace into the fire. Then your wish will come true.”
Memories of a long ago conversation with her mother flashed through Belissa’s mind.
She delicately fiddled with the necklace hanging around her neck with her trembling hands. It was an heirloom left by her mother.
Though she hesitated to throw it into the fireplace, she trusted her mother. Her mother was not one to speak empty phrases.
Belissa took a slow breath.
‘A wish, a wish…
Please kill Eleanor and Frederick, or… make Eleanor suffer the same.
Make them unhappy.’
Belissa had many wishes.
However, none of those things would improve Belissa’s situation. It was futile.
“Let’s think of something useful.”
The most earnest wish for Belissa at the moment.
Clenching her teeth, she took off the necklace and threw it into the furnace.
Crack-! The flames turned a vibrant blue. It was as vivid as the sapphire embedded in the center of the necklace.
–Say your wish, Master of Flames.
Master of Flames…? Was it referring to the owner of the necklace? Before the unfamiliar sight, Belissa’s frozen lips slowly parted.
“…Turn back time.”
That was precisely what Belissa wanted.
She could take revenge on her own, but reversing the misfortunes she suffered was impossible for her.
Belissa gently wiped away the tears that silently streamed down her face.
–Master of Flames, to grant this wish, you must use three out of seven chances. The number of wishes you can make will be reduced to four. Is that acceptable?
Four wishes remain in exchange for turning back time.
Belissa thought for a moment and nodded.
She was the current owner of the necklace, and this was her most desperate wish.
“It doesn’t matter.”
–Understood.
And the vibrant blue flames engulfed Belissa.
Beep-!
Belissa sat up abruptly, cold sweat dripping down her face. When she turned her head abruptly, she saw the fireplace with the flames crackling.
“A dream…”
“Elder Sister, did you have a dream?”
Belissa slowly turned her head and saw Eleanor smiling broadly at her.
“Why did you come here?”
Belissa coldly asked.
“Sister…? Did you have a strange dream? Where should Eleanor be, then?”
Looking on the verge of tears, Eleanor shook her head. Then, she embraced Belissa sweetly, filling her nose with a sweet rose scent.
Smelling such a fragrance again, she realized she had noticed a similar aroma on Frederick at some point. However, she dismissed it since he said it was a scent that must have stuck with him from some social gatherings.
‘What a complete fool.’
Belissa scorned her own foolishness silently and pushed Eleanor away.
Then she realized that Eleanor looked younger than the last time she saw her; her cheeks were rounder, her lips were rosy, and her round eyes looked younger.
Belissa pursed her lips.
“How old are you now?”
“Older Sister, really! Eleanor is 18 years old. I’ll be an adult soon! Sister, don’t forget that you promised to buy Eleanor a dress for her coming-of-age!”
“Ha.”
Belissa scoffed.
Eighteen years old! Moreover, the pain that had plagued Belissa’s body had disappeared.
Even without looking in the mirror, she knew she had returned to being 20 years old.
Her mother’s promise was true.
Belissa had succeeded.
She touched her neck. The cold sensation of the necklace remained.
A sense of triumph washed over her.
“Right, I promise, Eleanor.”
“Eleanor is so happy to have a sister!”
Eleanor smiled, holding Belissa’s hand.
“Moreover, when Sister gets married, Eleanor will go as a maid, too! It’s so good!”
“How come?”
Eleanor replied as if it were a matter of fact.
“Because, that way, Eleanor won’t leave Sister’s side! You’re the only one in the Medize family who doesn’t ignore Eleanor. If Sister leaves, Eleanor will be truly alone.”
As Eleanor spoke with a sad expression, Belissa suppressed her laughter.
Everything about Eleanor was false.
“Sister is Eleanor’s benefactor.”
If Eleanor truly considered Belissa her benefactor, then she wouldn’t have shamelessly stolen her husband.
Along with Frederick, she insulted and deceived Belissa.
“I want to rest, Eleanor.”
“Yes! Eleanor was too noisy. Take a break, Sister. Eleanor will leave.”
Eleanor carefully arranged Belissa’s bedding.
Belissa took Eleanor as her maid of her own volition out of pity.
An utterly useless choice.
Eleanor showed her characteristically lovely smile and walked away.
After confirming the sound of Eleanor’s footsteps fading away, Belissa abruptly stood up.
She looked around the room. From the ceiling decorations to the wallpaper, carpet, and more. Seeing these, it was evident that this place was Florence.
‘I’m still unmarried.’
And her tension eased, sloughing to the floor.
Then, the forgotten emotions rushed in like a torrent–anger, hatred, and deep betrayal.
Belissa had noticed Frederick’s betrayal a week before.
He had told her that he would be going hunting in the south with Count Sonabel for a week.
However, she discovered the count casually sitting with a woman at a coffeehouse.
“My dear Belissa, it pains me to leave you in such a state for a hunting trip. But, Belissa, as you know, this matter is crucial. This policy’s success depends on it. You know my feelings, right?”
Son of a b*tch.
Thanks to Count Sonabel, who anxiously looked at her, Belissa realized something was off.
A woman’s intuition is never wrong.
It felt like the beautiful fairy tale where Belissa lived was crumbling.
To corner Frederick, she needed evidence. However, as if he had concealed everything, she couldn’t find any evidence of his deception.
Thus, she waited for Frederick to return. And then she caught his attendant with her husband’s letter and took it.
It was the letter Frederick wrote to Eleanor.
“Ha. Hahaha…”
Belissa burst into empty laughter.
That deceitful bastard.
Was it always Eleanor? From the beginning?
If that were the case, he should have chosen Eleanor!
But that wasn’t possible.
Belissa had lineage, standing, and wealth that Eleanor didn’t possess. Things that Eleanor, the king’s illegitimate child, could never have!
Those elements were likely crucial to Frederick, the crown prince of Boswell.
The emperor of Boswell, the nobility, and even His Holiness would never have approved of Eleanor.
“I love you, Belissa. Meeting you feels like the luckiest thing in my life. You might be a gift that God bestowed upon me. Thanks to you, my life is perfect.”
Frederick’s sweet nothings he whispered at her came to her in a rush. They roamed about in her slumber, striking Belissa like turbulent waves.
Deceived by those honeyed lies, Belissa became complacent, unaware of what was going on behind the scenes.
She married, and a year later, Eleanor left the palace. It wasn’t due to marriage. It was because she had a child out of wedlock!
Eleanor said she would go to a convent with the child, and Belissa continued to look after her until the end.
“I don’t know who it is, Sister. I drank too much… And when I opened my eyes, I was alone. What do I do, Sister…?”
“It’s alright, Eleanor. You have me. I’ll protect you and my niece or nephew.”
How much did Eleanor mock her without her knowledge? Belissa’s heart felt as if it were splitting in half.
She hit her chest.
Recalling the bewildered courtiers who tried to stop her and the maids. Since when were they related, and how much?
She would never know now. Belissa vowed to never return to the Imperial Palace.
She lost everything.
“Now it’s your turn, you wretch.”
What was the point of dirtying her mouth with curses?
Belissa knew hundreds of ways to tarnish his life in a more refined way.
And the first step was–
‘Annulment.’
You take that one, Eleanor.
