Chapter 1
[ To Eleanor,
My beloved Eleanor, are you doing well? You must be going through a lot because of Belissa.
Contrary to your concerns, she hasn’t noticed anything yet. However, Belissa might catch on soon, but I’m not afraid of anything.
I believe that God will protect our love.
I have loved you from the beginning, and that feeling hasn’t changed, so I trust that God’s grace will be with us.
Eleanor, I don’t know how the truth I’m about to tell you will affect you. But I believe that you will be happy in some aspects and sad in others.
My angel, Eleanor. Belissa has miscarried. She can no longer have children.
Eleanor, please do not be too sad. She is perfectly fine.
As promised, my successor will be the child you bear.
I’ll write another letter soon, Eleanor. I eagerly await the day we meet.
Loving you dearly, Frederick ]
“F*cking piece of sh*t.”
Belissa cursed without realizing it.
The aching pain in her tired body and the heartache that seemed to split into a thousand pieces both disappeared completely. Even the presence of the beautiful sunset tickling her feet was forgotten.
Her head throbbed. She lowered eyelids that trembled more delicately than butterfly wings.
Hot tears streamed down.
“It’s okay. Our child was taken by God’s immense love, Belissa.”
Frederick, her husband and the author of the letter she had just read, whispered those words to Belissa while holding her.
Belissa slowly gentled her rough breathing. Her heart was pounding like she was having a seizure, and her fingers were trembling.
It was difficult to move; even putting strength into her limbs felt challenging.
‘…Snap out of it, Belissa.’
Are you going to continue to endure this?
Frederick rejoiced in Belissa’s miscarriage and promised his lover a successor.
There were countless accusations that Belissa wanted to hurl at Frederick, but it was futile. She couldn’t waste strength on useless matters.
Belissa bit her lips tightly. As she held the letter in her hand her eyes gleamed viciously.
As written in the letter, Belissa could no longer conceive.
In the happy married life that Belissa had envisioned, there was a child.
However, she might have lost that opportunity due to her husband.
Belissa wiped away her tears forcefully. Though despair seemed to pull her into hell, she couldn’t just endure this foolishly.
The disgusting face of Eleanor came to mind as she said that she had decided to enter a convent because she had not met the man she loved.
Belissa touched her face with slender fingers. Between the exposed fingers, hot tears flowed once again.
It felt like the blood in her whole body was boiling.
Uncontrollable feelings of betrayal, humiliation, and anger–emotions that cannot be described in a single word–gathered and churned in her stomach.
“Ugh…”
A trickle of blood flowed from Belissa’s lips. In the tabletop mirror on the desk, her face was reflected. Burst blood vessels were visible in her eyes.
Just when Belissa staggered and grabbed the desk,
Clak- The door, which had seemed tightly closed, as if confining Belissa inside the room, opened.
“Belissa? Are you here?”
It was a damned sweet and gentle voice.
Belissa didn’t recoil. She glared at Frederick with shot-blood eyes.
Still portraying himself as a perfect, caring husband, the man walked in.
“What’s wrong, Belissa? What happened…”
As he reached out toward Belissa, he noticed the letter in her hands.
What was clearly visible in the crumpled letter was the name of the Fedorica Convent.
“…Aah.”
Frederick exclaimed as if he understood what was going on. He ran his hands over his face.
“It seems that stupid chamberlain caught the letter.”
Those were Frederick’s first words. Belissa snapped.
“No words for me?”
“What should I say? You probably know everything from that letter.”
Frederick shrugged as if no further explanation was needed.
“All you read is the truth, Belissa. Come here.”
Frederick gently pulled Belissa, who stood stiff as a rock, into his arms. While patting her back, he continued.
“Don’t overthink it. God hasn’t given us a child. That’s why I thought I needed a woman who could bear children.”
“What a contradiction. You started those filthy deeds with Eleanor before we got married.”
Frederick scratched his forehead.
“Did you know all that? Hmm.”
He rolled his eyes gently.
Everything was just as Belissa loved it. Nothing had changed, so what went wrong?
Transparent tears fell incessantly.
Frederick sighed lightly and gently wiped away Belissa’s tears; the touch remained the same.
“Why are you crying? It hurts my heart.”
Frederick kissed her tenderly.
“Just think of it as a precaution for any unforeseen circumstances, Belissa. A substitute for you. Just as it was fate for God to take our child and for you to become unable to have another, it’s also fate for Eleanor to bear the child who will succeed us.”
Despite the gentle tone, each word pierced Belissa’s heart.
Belissa swallowed her hot tears.
“Just go and die, Frederick.”
Frederick smiled at the venomous words.
“Oh dear, you’re angry.”
“I curse you. I curse the foolish me who married you. I–”
Frederick interrupted, “I still need you, Belissa. You, being that smart, understand what that means.”
With every blink of Belissa’s eyes, tears streamed down.
While her soul seemed to burn with agony, Frederick remained unscathed.
Like an eagle clutching its prey, Belissa grabbed Frederick’s hand as it wiped at her tears.
“Bel— ah!”
She bit his hand.
Frederick managed to pull Belissa away, staring at her strangely.
With blood smeared around her mouth, Belissa was smiling bizarrely.
Frederick calmly wrapped the wound with a handkerchief and commanded nonchalantly.
“Listen. Lock Belissa in the room right away. Make sure she can’t take a single step outside. It seems the queen’s body isn’t in good condition; she is saying weird things.”
“Yes, Your Majesty!”
The attendants waiting outside responded with rigid voices.
Like this, Belissa was confined to her room.
A day, two days, a week, and then a month passed.
Belissa pondered while trapped in the room.
Where did it all go wrong? What made Belissa suffer so much? Who else was involved in this matter?
“Your Majesty, if you don’t eat anything like this, you’ll be in big trouble.”
Countess Briana had been attending to Belissa for the past ten years and now spoke with a voice full of concern.
Countess Briana sighed and continued,
“His Majesty is also very worried. And there are letters from the Medize Kingdom expressing concern for Your Majesty.”
Countess Briana opened the letters and held them out.
Belissa lay still on the bed; only her eyes moved
[ My beloved little sister,
How could you make such a foolish choice? There has never been in history an emperor who had eyes for only one woman. ]
Belissa chuckled. Her body, which had not been properly nourished for a long time, trembled with laughter.
She swung her skeletal thin arm.
Watching the letter fall to the ground, Countess Briana frowned.
“…It’s because you behave like this that His Majesty’s attention is going elsewhere.”
There was no one on Belissa’s side. She let out a hollow laugh and opened her mouth.
“I’ve wasted my life.”
“What?”
“Just leave.”
Countess Briana picked up the letter.
“Your Majesty, if you continue like this, you might not be able to maintain your position. In fact, even though Miss Eleanor’s status is a bit questionable, she is still the daughter of the Medize family, isn’t she?”
Countess Briana finally revealed her true colors. Her sharply raised eyes looked venomous.
Perhaps Briana had covered Belissa’s eyes—to see nothing, to know nothing…
Was this the meager price of trust?
