Chapter 76
“My mother had no other children, so I had no choice. I grew up hearing that I was born into the imperial family to rule Larchen, but why? If they’re going to put me down, doesn’t there have to be a justifiable basis and reason?”
Berthas’ lips fluttered at her angry cry.
He wanted to tell her. He also stepped down from his position as crown prince because there was a justifiable basis and reason, and those who wanted power didn’t care about that. He wanted to tell her that people who thought like her would never covet her position.
“Though this position may look easy, it is not that comfortable. There is not a single thing you can do however you want, and there is always a lot to think about, so why? Why is everyone so anxious not to be able to sit here?”
“Isilis.”
Even though he opened his mouth wanting to calm her down and called out her name, Isilis continued speaking as if she could not hear him.
“It wasn’t just a day or two where I didn’t sleep because I was thinking about the empire. What about the child? Even though I want to have more children, I am cautious about the harm to the child who will inherit the throne. It’s not because I wanted to have children, but because my subjects urged me to have children! So…!”
Isilis’ body trembled.
Was it supposed to be like that? An Empress who ascended to the throne at a young age. Plus, a woman.
Since she didn’t have a husband, she was told to take one, yet since she refused, they would have asked what she would do. There was only one way she chose in that situation. She would have chosen to bring a successor from somewhere rather than share power with someone else.
She thanked the heavens for Berthas that he was staying in the port from which she fled. Even if it weren’t for him, she would have had a child somewhere because she probably thought it was her doing her duty.
“Do you regret it?”
“What?”
“Do you regret having a child with me?”
Isilis turned her head at Berthas’ low-pitched question. He got up and stood next to her as he frowned, asking her what she was talking about.
“I have no regrets.”
“What?”
“For whatever reason, you chose me and had a child. The child is now the Emperor of Hillenton and the successor to Larchen. Yours and my child.”
“Regretting is ridiculous.”
“Yes. Isilis. That’s what an Empress is like. You shouldn’t regret anything you’ve done. The Empress is shameless. Isn’t this the basics of kingship?”
“Berthas.”
“If you had told me you regretted sitting on the Empress’ throne, I would have been disappointed in you. You are the one more suited to this position than anyone I have ever seen.”
Berthas whispered, as he gazed into her eyes and took Isilis’ hand and kissed the back of her hand.
“I know that much.”
“Then you. You can’t let those who try to take what’s yours.”
“I have no intention of leaving it alone.”
“Isn’t that enough?”
“Yes.”
As Isilis nodded her head at his lightly spoken words, Berthas rolled his eyes and smiled at the sight of her seemingly organized thoughts.
She looked good with her confident face.
Even though he didn’t mind seeing her frown because of him, he didn’t want to see her upset for reasons other than him so he deliberately spoke lightly. Seeing how her mood quickly improved, he realized that he was having more of an effect on her than he thought. That was enough.
Her heart thinks of him.
That was enough.
She felt her sinking mood improve a little after hearing Berthas’ words. This was the first time she felt betrayed. It hurt her that the people who knew what she had done so far for the empire were prepared to come after her in this way.
To deceive the Empress of the Larchen Empire.
‘How dare you ask me to prove my lineage?’
They were insane. After Berthas calmed her anger, her thoughts gradually came together.
It was clear that they were trying to do something to her through Hillenton, which was why they shook her. The wine was produced near the estate of Marquis Miller, smuggling trade across the continent. It all came down to one thing.
It was clear that Marquis Miller had handed over the magic bullets to Hillenton. There must have been collaborators among the wizards, and they would have continuously passed on information to Hillenton.
‘For what purpose…’
Anyone who was not of Larchen’s bloodline couldn’t inherit the throne. It was an established fact and an eternal and immutable truth.
Why did they use this trick?
There was something that was missing. Something was passing through Isilis’ mind as she continued to think about it. Documents that she didn’t see because she had to deal with things after having the child.
It seemed like there might be something in the papers Faylos had left behind that was entangled in her father’s death. She got up from the audience room and quickly returned to her room using magic. Berthas’ surprised face appeared through the brightly shining magic, but that wasn’t the important thing.
As she searched through the magic-sealed drawer in the bedroom, she noticed that the documents Faylos had given her were still unsealed.
It was a report.
She burned the seal with magic without using a paper knife and read the report. Her hands were shaking as she read the report. She could feel her legs giving out at the secret she had never even thought of.
‘Faylos. Even after knowing all this…!’
Isilis felt dizzy and leaned against the table.
She couldn’t wrap her head around it. The content written in the report should not have been revealed to the world. What on earth was Faylos thinking and kept his mouth shut even after knowing all this? If he was right in front of her, she wanted to ask what on earth he was thinking.
The chief attendant’s voice sounded in her ears, who could not stop her thoughts from spreading even as she burned the report in her hand.
“Your Majesty. The chief wizard has returned.”
Isilis took a deep breath upon hearing that they were waiting for her in the audience room. Although her mind went blank and she could not think, she answered mechanically.
“Tell them I’ll be right there.”
“Understood.”
She was shocked when she saw her expressionless face in the mirror as if it was covered in wax. Seeing her pale face, Isilis closed her eyes tightly and opened them.
It was just as Faylos said. Nothing changed.
She was Isilis Larchen.
She was the Empress of this empire.
The ladies-in-waiting and servants followed her as she opened the door with magic and walked away. The knights who went out of the imperial palace and returned from handling her mission also walked behind her.
Finally, the wizards joined. Isilis tilted her head at the footsteps of those following her. The Empress of Larchen was her.
No one but her could sit here.
When she entered the audience room, many nobles were already tied with ropes and kneeling before her. Without even casting the slightest glance at them, Isilis sat down on her throne.
A brass crown shone on her head.
“Marquis Miller. Do you know why you were captured?”
“Treason! I never planned anything like that!”
“I guess you don’t understand the situation.”
With her gesture, Allure began reading the document in her hand.
It was worth seeing when their faces changed every moment when they heard his voice. Among the nobles whose faces turned black at Allure’s voice reading every last line, only Marquis Miller had a calm expression.
“Do you still have anything to say?”
“Let’s say I collaborated with Hillenton to overthrow Larchen. Why do you think I would do that?”
“It seems like you wanted the throne.”
“No, I couldn’t stand to see Larchen being toyed with by someone who isn’t from the imperial family!”
Everyone’s eyes turned to Marquis Miller. He continued speaking slowly with a calm face.
“Isilis Larchen. No, you are of too low blood to be called Larchen. Did you find the nobles of Larchen funny as you deceived the empire and sat on the throne? You know best that just because you have strong magic power doesn’t mean you become an imperial family, right?”
“You’re talking nonsense.”
“Still avoiding until the end! Come on, prove your lineage! You can’t do it? Because you are not a member of the Imperial Family!”
Despite the fact that the people in the audience room looked at her with puzzled eyes, Isilis’s expression did not change. Isilis got up.
“It’s the proof you want so much, so I’ll give it to you. I was planning on doing it tomorrow anyway, so it doesn’t matter if it’s today or tomorrow.”
Isilis stood up from her seat and spoke to the wizards.
“Prepare the space movement magic.”
“Where?”
“I’m going to the Great Temple.”
Isilis nodded when the wizards said that it would take time to move everyone in the audience room.
There was silence while the magic circle was being prepared. Neither Berthas nor any of the nobles present could easily open their mouths. Only Duke Verus was looking at Marquis Miller with sad eyes.
“Your Majesty, preparations are complete.”
“Let’s go.”
Since the Great Temple was located not far from Larchen’s imperial palace, the magic circle was prepared sooner than expected. As the wizards, who had herded both those who were bound by ropes and those who were not, into the magic circle, chanted a spell, a pure white light appeared, and the vision changed.
They were at the Great Temple.
“I was waiting. Your Majesty.”
“It’s been a while, High Priest.”
When the High Priest, who was present at the meeting place, bowed to Isilis and greeted her, she made a light gesture. He straightened his back and opened his mouth again.
“I was told that you had to go into the room where your true name was written.”
“That’s how it is.”
“The people back there…”
“They’re just an observer.”
“…I understand.”
The High Priest, who had already heard everything from Faylos, took a step forward. Isilis followed the High Priest. As he walked, the nobles and Berthas walked behind him, and the knights moved with the bound nobles.
Finally, the priests at the very end of the group moved.
No one could escape.
“This is the room.”
When the High Priest stood in front of a fancy door, everyone’s steps stopped. The room was surrounded by red magic, and from the outside, it looked like no one other than the imperial family could enter.
At the forefront, the High Priest opened his mouth.
