Chapter 75
“That’s too much!”
“Too much?”
“No, that’s a good idea.”
Agreeing with his words, Isilis stepped out.
“The Marquis gave up his life, and those who filed appeals with him also needed to give up part of the territory. There has never been a case where proof of lineage was requested to the imperial family, who did not neglect their duties. Under these circumstances, it is difficult to prove my lineage without any conditions. So you shall risk your life.”
Marquis Miller bit his lip. As the nobles following him waited for his answer, he eventually opened his mouth.
“Very well.”
“That’s it, then.”
She smiled and rose from her seat.
“I understand that the Marquis accepted my terms, and the other nobles agreed to it. Then, in a week, I will announce the place to prove the imperial lineage.”
“I accept your orders.”
“You may go.”
Seeing the nobles hurrying out of the field at her words, Isilis cast a pitiful gaze. Duke Verus, who remained, came closer to her and opened his mouth.
“Your Majesty.”
“That’s enough. Don’t say anything.”
Looking at him with a gloomy face, she couldn’t say anything. She knew for the first time that there were no nobles who would be on her side.
The Emperor, who enjoyed omnipotent power, was in such a lonely position. She realized once again that, apart from her confidants, there were few nobles in this Larchen who showed allegiance instead of reverence and fear.
“Are you going to the temple?”
She nodded her head at Duke Verus’s words.
“There is no other way than that.”
“If the place where your true name is exposed, would it be okay?”
Even Duke Verus knew that she had no other way to prove her lineage. Even as the guardian of the imperial family, he had no choice but to do this.
Since public opinion was not good, Duke Verus could not understand Marquis Miller’s strange imagination, though he found it difficult to bring back the nobles who had already gone over to the Marquis. In addition, he felt sorry for the danger Isilis had to endure.
Berthas, who was listening by the side, spoke.
“Your true name? A wizard’s true name?”
“Yes.”
“Isilis!”
“Stop. Don’t complicate my mind even more.”
Berthas, knowing the meaning of exposing the place where a wizard’s true name resides, called her, but Isilis had already made up her mind. She intended to speak with the High Priest, just like how she talked with Faylos.
She intended to completely cast off the restraints of the imperial family for her child. If this incident remained as a precedent, it could have happened to the child as well.
Wanting to avoid such a situation, she made a decision.
“Call the high priest. Duke.”
“Your Majesty.”
“Get the high priest to come to the palace as soon as possible.”
“It is customary for the temple not to get involved in the Empire’s affairs.”
“I know, but I need to seek the temple’s cooperation. If this incident exposes the place where my true name is located, I will try to destroy the book containing my true name.”
“…It is a wise judgment.”
Duke Verus spoke, bowing his head to Isilis. She said she would get rid of another custom. Isilis was delighted with the Duke’s reply.
“I’m glad you’re on my side, too.”
“The nobility of Larchen always stand by Your Majesty’s side.”
“There are many people who aren’t.”
“Since this incident covered the good and bad, the only thing left is for Larchen to develop.”
Duke Verus, who had abandoned the lingering attachment to his old friend, uttered firmly. Looking at him, she nodded and patted the Duke on the shoulder.
Everything was decided.
Berthas looked at them with shining eyes.
Just before the week Isilis had promised, there were people who came to see Berthas. It was Dahan and Allure.
“Your Excellency.”
“You came sooner than expected.”
“I found it!”
As soon as Berthas saw Dahan’s face, he laughed. Of course, Dahan would know how to find it. Since he thought it would take longer, he was surprised that they came so quickly.
“Where did you find it?”
“There were documents in the cracks in the wall between the secret passages.”
“Documents?”
Even though this incident exposed all the secret passages in Hillenton’s imperial castle, Berthas did not care. It was a damned country anyway, so what if the secret passage was revealed? He had no intention of leaving Hillenton’s name as it was since he would tear it to pieces and wipe it off the map.
That was his plan.
As he looked at the documents Dahan held out, he couldn’t stop his eyebrows from furrowing.
“The reason they have the magic bullets is to attack Larchen?”
“It is, Your Excellency.”
“The previous Emperor and Crown Prince of Hillenton are insane.”
“Since His Excellency is on a winning streak, it seems that they had this idea.”
Even so, this went too far. Despite the fact that the difference in national strength was significant, saying that they would attack Larchen first was like saying they would kill all the people of the Empire.
“They were insane.”
“There is another thing.”
“More?”
With Dahan’s gaze, Allure stopped to take out the papers in his arms.
“It is right that we should give it to Her Majesty first.”
Berthas nodded towards Allure. He didn’t have to stir up trouble by saying he would look at the papers now. He could be seen where he was with Isilis.
“Are you going to Isilis?”
“Don’t use His Majesty’s name carelessly.”
Allure replied bluntly, giving off a hint of displeasure at Berthas’ words. He didn’t like his attitude of dragging down a heavenly person so carelessly.
“What if? I will stand by her side now.”
“That doesn’t mean that you can use Her Majesty’s name carelessly. Be polite in the presence of others.”
“That’s a given, but not you. You are her aide and the teacher of the Empress of Hillenton, so you count as someone close.”
Strangely persuaded by Berthas’ words that he was not being polite because he felt close to him, Allure relaxed his expression.
Seeing that simple appearance, Berthas smiled and spoke again.
“So, let’s go. To her.”
Dahan shook his head as he saw the two of them stepping out side by side.
He was his superior, but he was a man with a scary side to him. Showing closeness to others casually or being able to bow down to anyone if necessary. While he hadn’t seen Berthas for a day or two, Dahan felt his arm had a sudden chill.
“What happened?”
“It is said that there are people who sympathize with Hillenton.”
“In Larchen?”
“Otherwise, so many magic bullets can’t go out of Larchen.”
Seriousness was evident from Allure’s face as he spoke with a firm face. Berthas, who cast a glance at his face for a moment, looked back and responded.
“It’s fortunate in many ways.”
“What?”
“I decided to become the consort of Larchen.”
“You didn’t choose Larchen, Her Majesty did!”
“Yes, of course, but isn’t it better in the end? Because it’s me.”
Allure, who did not want to agree to Berthas’ words even if he had to die, ignored him and went ahead. Following him, Berthas was also lost in thought.
‘…There is someone in Larchen who cooperated with Hillenton.’
There was no way there wasn’t. It was an event almost on the scale of a rebellion. It was clear that there must have been some kind of contract with the provider, knowing that Hillenton was collecting magic bullets to attack Larchen but continued to provide magic bullets.
However, things changed when Berthas took over the imperial palace.
And since he killed the previous Emperor and the Crown Prince, things must have gone even worse. Perhaps, had they been alive, the rebels in Larchen could have plotted another business with them two.
Berthas went on, feeling fortunate to have made a quick decision and killed them both. She was at the end of the road.
“Your Majesty. The chief wizard and the regent of Hillenton ask for an audience.”
Soon, the title that the chief attendant called him would change from the regent of Hillenton to Larchen’s consort.
“You may go in.”
Watching the chief attendant bow down to him, Berthas made up his mind. It would be around the corner. In the meanwhile, Allure hurriedly entered, bowing his head towards Isilis.
“Greetings, Your Majesty.”
“Yes. Did things go well?”
“I have something to report.”
She beckoned and dismissed everyone around as she cast her gaze at Berthas, who entered quietly and sat down in the chair placed under the throne. As the attendants and ladies-in-waiting and the aides and knights withdrew, she spoke.
“What is it?”
“Your Majesty. The matter is bigger than I thought.”
“A big matter?”
Isilis accepted the bundle of papers Allure held out and read them one by one. The papers, which had been moving slowly, picked up speed and finally fell from her hand with a harsh sound.
“These guys are out of their minds!”
Her face flushed red as she set the papers down on her desk like throwing them away.
It was obvious that they didn’t even have to look at it anymore. It must be where there was nonsense written about joining hands with Hillenton and driving out the Empress of Larchen, and the names of the people who said that nonsense would be written on it.
Seeing Isilis, her face flushed with anger, Berthas held out his hand and she passed the papers to him. It didn’t go beyond expectations. It was not surprising that among the names written was the name of Marquis Miller.
Berthas, who was meticulously examining the papers, turned his gaze to her. Without feeling his gaze, she raised her head after roughly writing down on the paper and stamped it.
“Call Duke Verus. And Allure.”
“Yes. Your Majesty.”
“Go and get them all.”
“I take orders.”
After receiving the instruction, there was the sound of Allure going outside and summoning the wizards.
“Guard!”
At her call, the knights hurriedly entered.
“It is treason. Commander, go immediately and bring the ringleaders together with the chief wizard and have them kneel before me.”
“I take orders.”
As the knights rushed out, only Isilis’ sigh could be heard in the silent audience room. Couldn’t say anything to her, Berthas just waited for her heart to clear up.
After staring at the empty audience room for a while, she opened her mouth.
“Why did I become the Empress of Larchen?”
“What?”
