Chapter 2
I want a divorce! (2)
“Huuk—sob. Sob.”
Loud sobs filled Leyla’s room for a while as she poured out her emotions. Because of that, when the tears subsided, her head throbbed and ached, but strangely, her heart felt relieved.
Wiping her swollen eyes, Leyla murmured with a melancholic face.
“Grandfather, you were wrong. My marriage was a complete failure.”
Even though she couldn’t expect an answer from her late grandfather, venting her complaints aloud felt like it might ease her soul a bit.
Leyla took a deep breath, and with a sigh, she checked the last page of the letter, the inheritance list her grandfather had left behind.
“Wow.”
She had already checked it once, but it was still impressive.
“What can I do with this? Well, at least I won’t have to worry about making a living for the rest of my life.”
If she moved to a relatively inexpensive small town, she could spend money without much trouble and live a life of luxury.
Even though Leyla had never really experienced handling money after marriage, having grown up in a merchant family, she had a fairly accurate understanding of the value of the inheritance she had acquired. Contemplating what she could do with it, Leyla suddenly had a question.
‘What do I want to do the most right now?’ It didn’t take long for her to come up with an answer.
‘Getting out of this place full of people who ignore and hate me!’
As if a lightning bolt had struck her head, Leyla stood up abruptly, holding her grandfather’s letter.
“I’m going to divorce and live a fabulous single life!”
Receiving alimony would be nice, but even if not, who cares?! She had nothing to worry about now. With the inheritance her grandfather left her, she could buy a pretty house and live alone if things didn’t work out.
With newfound confidence and a sense of security, Leyla felt like she could do anything. Like a fox with a tiger having its back, a reliable emergency fund made her believe she could handle anything that came her way.
And so, Leyla took out the divorce papers she had secretly hidden under the sofa, just in case. Although she had prepared them, she never expected to actually use them.
Moreover, she had never anticipated that today would be the day.
Leyla, gazing at the divorce papers with hesitation, walked towards the door.
“You can do this, Ella.”
Her whispers trembled slightly due to the tension. However, her clenched fist displayed firm determination. With a self-encouraging gesture and a tightly held fist, Leyla stepped outside and looked at the sunset sky.
It was time for her husband, who had gone out, to return.
Leyla would find her husband, show him the divorce papers, and boldly demand what she deserved…
Let’s divorce!
As Leyla took heavy steps, the pendant around her neck swayed. Feeling its weight as it swayed, Leyla paused.
“…I’m holding this while heading for a divorce.”
She gently gripped the pendant. The round collar, adorned with meticulously embedded gems, was the first gift she received from her husband, who had become a hero by defeating the evil dragon Phafner.
A treasure that was discovered in the deepest part of the dragon’s lair.
When she received this necklace, she dreamed of a hopeful future.
Goodbye to the lonely life with cold relatives!
She looked forward to a sweet honeymoon with her husband, raising children, and welcoming a comfortable old age. She had even thought of the names for their children: a daughter and a son. However, her heart, which swelled with hope, vanished the moment she met her husband.
Leyla’s husband, Siegfried, was the complete opposite of her.
In appearance, interests, personality, family relationships, and even their upbringing, everything was different.
Above all, he had no interest whatsoever in a married life with Leyla.
No, he had no interest in Leyla herself.
Even when facing his wife, he always stared blankly with an expressionless face and rarely uttered a word as if he were bored.
Even a warden facing a criminal would send warmer glances than he did!
Whenever Leyla faced her husband, she was so tense that she couldn’t speak properly.
As a result, and despite living with her husband for over a year, she still didn’t know what kind of person he was.
Well, that was because they had never had so few exchanges before…
‘…Eight times, to be precise. Excluding those routine greetings like “Did you sleep well?” or “Have you eaten?” We probably had a genuine conversation around a bit more than three times.’
Leyla hated that she even remembered such trivial details. It seemed too petty, and above all, it made her seem overly attached to her husband.
‘He probably hasn’t even thought about whether he’s ever had a proper conversation with me.’
Perhaps her husband had even completely forgotten that he had given her this pendant.
From the beginning, their marriage was not based on love but rather on a strategic alliance with no particular emotions involved. Two years—or rather, practically one year of marriage—had passed, yet the distance between them remained.
It felt like they were more distant than strangers, despite being a married couple.
They had never shared a bed, let alone kissed. They had never had a proper wedding ceremony, so they hadn’t exchanged vows or sealed their oath with a kiss.
No, forget the kiss! They didn’t even hug or hold hands!
‘What kind of marriage is this?’
As the realization sank in, Leyla thought it might be better this way. With their relationship so dry, Siegfried would probably agree to their divorce without hesitation.
Leyla bit her lip tightly before letting go of the pendant. Fiddling with the paper in her hands as she walked towards her husband again, the pendant somehow felt heavier.
‘…If he had just liked me a little, I wouldn’t have decided to divorce.’
Her own thoughts startled her.
‘Stop regretting like a fool!’
She disliked herself for being so doubtful until the moment she decided on a divorce.
Biting her lip, she regained composure and forced her hesitant feet to move again. As her breath reached its peak, she arrived at her destination. The space where her husband, who spent more than half of the day outside, lingered upon returning home—his office.
The office door was so huge that it was easy for the large Siegfried to come and go, but Leyla had to tilt her head to see the end.
Standing in front of it, the petite Leyla felt an overwhelming pressure, as if her shoulders were being weighed down.
After shrinking reflexively, she mustered courage once again and straightened up.
The two pieces of paper in hand—the letter and the divorce papers—gave her the strength she needed. With trembling hands, she cautiously raised her hand and knocked.
Knock. Knock.
There was no response from inside. Worried that she might not have been heard, she strengthened her hand and knocked louder.
Knock! Knock!!
“Honey, it’s me.”
Still, there was no answer for a while. As Leyla frowned, thinking, ‘Should I knock harder? But if I hit any harder, my fist might hurt–’ the door suddenly creaked open.
“Eek!”
Startled, Leyla shrunk back and found herself looking up at a massive wall—no, a man who stood in front of her.
“Wife.”
Siegfried was looking down at her, his usual serious and gruff expression in place.
Leyla always found her husband uncomfortable. He had never been rude to her, but she felt uncomfortable.
He had a towering height, muscular build, imposing presence, and almost unchanged expression; he rarely opened his mouth first, and even when she tried to engage in conversation, he answered briefly and ended it quickly.
It was all the opposite of Leyla, who was small, lively, curious, and loved chatting.
This time, too, he just stared at Leyla without saying anything.
‘Is he angry because I came without notice?’
Feeling uneasy, Leyla hesitated before finally speaking.
“Um, I wanted to talk for a moment. Would that be okay?”
After maintaining silence throughout, Siegfried finally spoke.
“Please come in.”
Siegfried held the door and stepped aside, creating enough space for Leyla to enter. Hesitantly, she walked in.
She heard the sound of her husband closing the door behind her.
Click—
Even though it was a small sound, it made Leyla shudder as if she had heard thunder.
Watching his frightened, rabbit-like wife, Siegfried widened the space between the two and entered the room.
“Please, have a seat.”
“Yeees.”
Leyla followed his guidance and sat on the sofa. The deep green sofa was soft, but her husband’s office felt unfamiliar and uncomfortable. The tension didn’t seem to ease.
As she awkwardly sat, rolling her eyes like a frightened rabbit, Siegfried opened his mouth, breaking the silence.
“I will have someone bring tea.”
“N-no! It’s okay. I won’t be—cough—staying that long!”
Leyla declined, waving her hands. She was so tense that even a short sentence caused her voice to break. As the awkward Leyla sneakily glanced at Siegfried, he maintained the same indifferent expression as before.
It was fortunate that he didn’t mock her, but it was equally awkward that he showed no reaction at all.
‘I guess he’s not interested in anything I do.’
Feeling suddenly downhearted, Leyla fidgeted with her fingers.
As she thought he might think she was frustrating for coming and not saying anything, Siegfried just silently observed her without urging her on.
Neither of them spoke first, leaving the room in complete silence. The heavy silence made Leyla uncomfortable and uneasy, but on the other hand, Siegfried’s lack of urgency allowed her to collect herself.
“Ehem!”
Having regained her energy, Leyla straightened her posture and lifted her head.
As she did, her eyes met Siegfried’s, who had been staring at her. He had stunning eyes that complemented his handsome face.
‘I wish I could see myself reflected properly in those eyes.’
Still, she could never fathom what thoughts were hidden behind those calm, seemingly emotionless pupils.
Feeling awkward, Leyla opened her mouth.
“Uuum, I have something to give you.”
She had no longer the energy to be disappointed in Siegfried, who didn’t even ask her what it was.
As she handed him the documents she had brought, he didn’t show any signs of curiosity. The gaze that had been fixed on Leyla’s face all along shifted to the documents for a moment.
When Siegfried slowly accepted the documents, she tried to catch a glimpse of his expression.
‘Even if he looks at the documents, he’ll probably just nod stoically and sign, as usual.’
She had no expectations whatsoever as she imagined her husband’s next reaction.
However…
