Chapter 1
I want a divorce! (1)
“What a nice day for a divorce.”
Leyla, staring blankly at the clear sky rarely seen in the northern region, muttered.
“Of all days, the weather is so nice today…”
It was a beautiful, clear day for the first time since the day she got married.
Even though it was a lovely sky that would make her hum, Leyla’s heart became even more melancholic.
Leyla lowered her head and looked down at the document in her hands.
The large letters written at the top caught her eye.
“So, this day has finally come.”
It seemed like she had spent most of her married life pondering whether to divorce or not.
It took a long time to finally move from dragging on making a decision to actually making it.
It wasn’t an impulsive choice.
The things she had endured all this time eventually burst out.
Her grandfather, who cherished Leyla more than anyone else in the world, passed away.
She only found out about this fact more than two weeks later.
By the time she received the news, the funeral procedures had already been completed.
She never expected to send off her grandfather, who had showered her with love all her life, in such a futile way.
‘I haven’t seen him even once since I got married, and I couldn’t keep our promise to be together until the end. Even if people tried to stop me from going, I should have gone to see you…’
Just as Leyla—overwhelmed by regret and guilt—was trying to hold back the tears that welled up in her puffy eyes, staggering,
“I heard the owner of Full Moon Guild has changed? The previous owner had the wits to even make his granddaughter Countess, but he has no successors. I wonder what will happen in the future.”
Leyla’s steps abruptly halted at the loud chatter of people, who made no effort to gossip quietly.
The Full Moon Guild was Leyla’s family business.
In other words, they were gossiping about Leyla.
“Poor Lord Siegfried. He slayed the dragon and became a hero of the kingdom, but rumor has it that he returned only to enter into an arranged marriage to repay the debts accumulated for war preparations.”
“Lord Siegfried must be the one who got the least beneficial marriage of all the swordmasters in history. Marrying the Lady of a Baron who bought the title with money! My goodness!”
“I know, right? I even heard that Princess Nariel expressed her desire to marry Lord Siegfried, too.”
“And Princess Nariel isn’t the only one. There are rumors that even Princess Henrietta from the neighboring kingdom also has Lord Siegfried in her heart.”
“Oh my, so our illustrious “former merchant” Baron Lady managed to snatch the position desired by not one but two princesses?”
The openly mocking words about Leyla echoed through the corridor, reaching far and wide. It was impossible for her to ignore it, even if she wanted to.
Leyla looked disdainfully at the giggling women who were openly ridiculing her.
As their gazes met, one of the women, who had been covering her mouth and laughing arrogantly, suddenly made an awkward expression.
“I guess she heard everything.”
“…So what if she did? It’s all true!”
Despite how much they had mocked her, and after realizing that Leyla had overheard the conversation, they showed no concern or remorse at all.
They even went so far as to dismissively sneer at Ella, tilting their chins along with a contemptuous “hmph,” and glancing at her with a condescending look.
‘Ah.’
Leyla’s complexion turned pale.
She had been receiving consistent mockery and disdain for the past two years, so it had become familiar to her.
Of course, it wasn’t like that from the beginning.
“You need to know your place. Do you really think becoming a countess by luck makes you a respected noble Lady? Especially when you haven’t learned anything other than counting money from your family.”
***
Upon hearing such words for the first time, Leyla couldn’t conceal the shattered expression on her face.
If she tried to express her anger, people around her would react with, “It’s not about you; why are you getting upset?” She would be left feeling bewildered and unsure about what to do.
There was never a day when Leyla didn’t shed tears because of the nasty remarks from others.
However, after enduring it for about two years, she had grown numb to it.
Now, Leyla could brush off such mean remarks about her with a cynical smile.
But at this moment, she couldn’t.
‘You, bad people.’
After losing her grandfather, her heart shattered; she couldn’t afford to pretend she was okay.
‘You all are pure evil!’
She thought that, with the sadness welling up in her heart, she would burst into tears at the slightest provocation.
However, instead of tears, what burst forth was accumulated anger.
Leyla, clenching her fists, strode forward.
The women, who were taken aback by Leyla’s approaching figure, hesitated and stepped back.
They had expected Leyla to say nothing and just leave as usual, but they were astonished that she approached them so confidently.
Detecting their flabbergasted expressions and inner thoughts, a glint of ridicule flashed in Leyla’s eyes.
‘How ridiculous you must have thought of me…’
With tightly clenched fists, Leyla shot a challenging look at the woman standing in the middle and asked,
“What did I do so wrong?”
“…What?”
The women exchanged puzzled glances. They seemed taken aback when Leyla confronted them with determination since they expected her to slink away as usual, disheartened and avoiding confrontation.
Their reactions fueled Leyla’s boiling anger.
Without giving anyone a chance to intervene, she unleashed what she wanted to say.
“Marrying the count without knowing my place? Because it was a marriage bought with a dowry? I’m a vulgar woman who seized the position of Countess with money? Is that it?”
Every word she just spoke was something Leyla had directly heard.
—A former merchant’s lady who couldn’t shake off her old habits, buying her way into marriage with money.
—A vulgar woman who thought everything could be achieved with money.
—She had no culture because she hadn’t learned any.
—To go off to war for the kingdom only to return with debts and end up in such a degrading marriage—poor Count Vezer.
Now, the familiar words sounded painfully fresh.
‘I am also my family’s precious daughter! My grandfather cherished and loved me greatly!’
The more she thought about it, the more despondent she became.
‘I miss Grandfather.’
With a mixture of longing and sorrow, Leyla cried out,
“Who are you to treat someone like a fool in their face?”
Once she let it out, the emotions she had been holding back for so long burst forth.
“Do you think only you dislike it? I dislike it too, you know?! Me too! I hate it!”
~hate it! ~hate it!
Leyla’s thunderous voice echoed like a roar.
With a final, piercing look at the stunned women, Leyla abruptly turned and briskly walked away.
Seeking solace in the only space that provided a semblance of comfort in the still unfamiliar mansion—her bedroom—she collapsed as soon as she closed the door.
Her legs gave way due to the release of tension.
“I did it…!”
Taking deep breaths to calm herself, Leyla’s trembling hands took the letter she had just received.
It was a letter left by her grandfather before he passed away.
It was a short letter, separate from his will, containing words he wanted to convey to his beloved granddaughter.
The letter, seemingly penned with her once energetic grandfather’s last ounce of strength, stood out with uneven and faltering handwriting, unlike his usual steady script.
You’re still the precious little girl sitting on my lap and chirping.
Ella, the light of my life, it pained me to think about leaving you alone. So I can rest peacefully knowing you’re married.
Since the first time I saw Siegfried, I knew he would become a great man.
Despite people warning against your marriage, saying it was like throwing gold coins into the sea, I ignored it all and followed my guts.
And indeed, my predictions were not wrong. It seems like you have a very successful marriage, isn’t it?
Having a husband who is an extraordinary hero—someone even the queen can’t treat carelessly—eases my worries.
However, you can’t leave everything to your husband.
I’ve secretly set aside land and money for you.
It’s a considerable amount, so you can use it for whatever you want.
Keep it a secret from everyone.
Having a private purse that only you know about will give you peace of mind.
You may not trust anything else, but you can trust money.
What you do with that money is up to you. Use it wisely.
This is the last gift from your grandfather, who loves you more than anyone else ]
Drip~ Drip~
As she repeated the process of wetting the letter with tears and trying to dry it hastily with a trembling hand, a new teardrop fell onto the crinkled paper.
Leyla hurriedly attempted to wipe it away with the edge of her sleeve, but the tears had already permeated the paper.
“Nooo, the ink is smudging!”
Frustrated at why even this wouldn’t go as she wished, tears streamed down Leyla’s eyes, drop by drop.
