Chapter 2 – Reunion
Roa found it difficult to sleep with the thoughts of meeting him running through her head.
When she came down after taking a short nap to prepare to greet him, the servants were already bustling about.
He was not just an ordinary knight; he was Grand Duke Trone’s esteemed son. Roa personally inspected the preparations made to receive such a distinguished guest.
And Azen arrived punctually at the appointed time.
Since the Earl and Countess of Clarion were out in the capital, the current owner of the mansion was Shanderik, Clarion’s heir and Roa’s first brother.
Roa had prepared to welcome Azen along with the county’s heir and his wife.
“Thank you for coming so far. Welcome to the Clarion household.”
Reunited with Azen after four years, Roa froze in place, unable to even blink.
He was already tall, but he had grown to an unimaginable extent since then. He wasn’t just taller; he had become a robust man.
Meeting upfront with a grown-up version of Azen instead of the child of her memories wasn’t what she had imagined.
“Oh…”
After exchanging greetings with Shanderik and his wife, Azen walked toward Roa.
Watching him approach, she belatedly lowered her head.
“It is truly an honor for us that you came to our household.”
She smiled awkwardly but gracefully. Azen knelt in front of her and extended his hand. It was hard to believe that the grand ducal’s esteemed son was following such formalities with the young lady of a count family–he was undoubtedly a knight.
Tentatively, Roa extended her hand for him to kiss.
“It is indeed a great honor that you dedicate such noble time to me, Lady.”
Holding Roa’s hand, Azen bowed his head and kissed it.
Not the leaf of a Silver Osmanthus nor the scabbard of his sword, he had longed for the Lady Roa Clarion.
There was a strange atmosphere between the two, who had reunited after four years.
After lightly kissing Roa’s hand, Azen stood up. Still unable to recognize the Azen she had known, Roa lowered her head when their eyes met.
“If His Grace the Grand Duke were to see, he would be quite surprised. How could you do this to someone of lower rank like me…”
“I am now officially a knight. Please call me Sir Azen.”
A gentle smile adorned Azen’s lips. Roa, still with her head bowed, glimpsed at his smile and lowered her gaze again.
He was a gloomy boy with no expression just a few years ago, but now he had grown into a man who could show such a leisurely smile.
“It’s all thanks to Milady.”
Roa’s eldest brother, Shanderik, quickly read the subtle air between the two.
“We still have duties to attend to, so Roa will give you a tour of the manor.”
Shanderik gently nudged Roa forward.
The two started walking side by side.
All felt unfamiliar. There were too many things to consider–the pace to walk, whether to speed up or not, when to turn direction, and more.
She didn’t know where to start.
Looking around with her eyelids fluttering like butterfly wings, Roa spotted the garden unfolding before her and turned toward Azen.
“Brother Kaylon also designed our castle garden with a natural-like landscape similar to Duke Trone’s.”
He, too, liked natural-looking beautiful gardens. It was the only thing she knew they had in common.
“Sir Azen, you also liked natural-style gardens, right?”
“Of all the things I left behind in that mansion, the thing I missed most was the garden.”
It was a place that didn’t deserve any lingering attachment, yet he couldn’t forget the backyard garden where they first met.
“Especially the silver osmanthus.”
Roa was surprised that he remembered her favorite tree, which she had mentioned in passing. It seemed that their childhood encounter, although brief, had a great impact on him.
Roa’s heart grew heavier.
She didn’t expect him to be so swayed by her casually spoken words.
Though it turned out to be a positive outcome, she felt a hint of responsibility.
“Lady.”
“Yes?”
Roa had been lost in thought and raised her head at the sound of him addressing her.
Azen had leaned a bit closer. Unconsciously, she instinctively moved backward.
Leaning close to her ear, the man whispered in a soft and low voice.
“I would like to spend some private time with you, Lady.”
“Ah…”
Roa glanced at the maids trailing behind them.
“Then, later, let’s have a moment on the terrace.”
Roa, too, responded in a low tone.
Azen offered another affectionate smile. Despite his large and muscular body, he still had a boyish face when he smiled.
Roa caught herself unintentionally staring at his face and quickly turned away.
“In front of the terrace in the courtyard, there’s a Silver Osmanthus planted. Would you like to see it together?”
She hastily changed the topic.
Seeing Roa rushing ahead, Azen couldn’t help but chuckle.
The two arrived at the courtyard and faced each other as they sat on the outdoor terrace.
“Prepare the herb tea that Kaylon bought during his last trip.”
“Yes, Milady.”
The maids left briefly to prepare the tea.
Finally, it was time for the two of them to be alone.
“It’s alright if I speak freely?”
Azen spoke in a friendly manner. Roa was momentarily surprised, but quickly agreed.
“It’s fine when it’s just the two of us.””
In the past, it was she who approached him with a smile when he was frozen. Now, as time passed, it seemed she was the one feeling nervous, while he exuded the relaxed demeanor of an adult.
“I never knew you would truly become a knight. I just wanted to comfort you because you looked really disheartened back then.”
‘Did I inadvertently influence his life?’ Feeling burdened, Roa nervously fidgeted with her hands, avoiding eye contact.
“Roa.”
Azen called her name in a sweet voice. It was the first time he had called her by her name.
Her heart was pounding, and she sensed a rising warmth. It was difficult to lift her head due to shyness, but she still wanted to meet his eyes as he called her.
Slowly raising her head, Roa’s blue eyes met his.
“If it weren’t for you, I might still be trapped in that dark basement, unable to grow at all.”
Azen reached his hand toward Roa. After a moment of hesitation, she extended hers, and their fingers intertwined.
“I can’t forget that warm comfort you gave me that day. You gave me a goal and motivation to live.”
Roa felt strange looking at his face straight on.
His jet-black hair swayed softly. And she hadn’t noticed it at night, but now she realized how beautiful his mysterious crimson eyes could twinkle in daylight.
“I’m fortunate if you think that way.”
Still stiff, Roa forced the corners of her mouth to form a smile. She wished she could smile as naturally as he did, but the tension in her wouldn’t ease.
“So, what I wanted to say is–”
Azen exerted a bit more pressure on Roa’s hand resting in his.
“If Lady Clarion doesn’t have a personal knight yet, I would like to become your official personal knight.”
Roa was taken aback by his unexpected proposal. So startled she was, she almost withdrew her hand from his grip.
However, he quickly noticed her flinch and tightened his grip, preventing her from pulling away.
“Next month, there’s a knighthood ceremony at Luktia Castle, where I belong. I want to pledge my knight’s oath to you at that time.”
Receiving a knight’s oath.
While she had dreamed of it as a child reading fairy tales, she never expected such a thing to happen to her in reality.
“Haven’t you already had your investiture?”
“Yeah. Only the event was postponed due to Luktia’s personal matters.”
That turned out to be an opportunity for Azen.
“And once you finish your debutante…”
Azen continued talking while firmly holding her hand.
“I intend to formally request Count Clarion for your hand in marriage.”
“What?”
Azen was daring and headlong. Roa’s thought process seemed to momentarily freeze at his straightforwardness.
She had also imagined a marriage with him. However, that was a foolish thought she had alone.
It was surprising that he had similar thoughts. After all, they had only met once, four years ago.
“Sorry. It’s a bit sudden–”
“It’s okay to take your time and think.”
Azen released the hand that he had been holding tightly. He comfortably leaned back against the backrest.
“I’ve already thought it through carefully.”
Despite being the one who confessed, Azen still looked calm.
“You gave me the strength to dream and helped me escape from hell. You were the only one who supported me.”
Roa was so taken aback that she couldn’t hide her bewildered expression.
“If you don’t want to, I’ll never force it upon you.”
Azen tried to lighten Roa’s burden.
“Because above all, your happiness is the most important. I have no right to jeopardize that.”
“Okay…”
Soon after, the maids prepared herb tea.
The two spent some casual time chatting about the events that had transpired. As the sun began to set, the servants arranged a room for Azen.
Roa exchanged a brief farewell with him and went upstairs. After a refreshing shower and changing into comfortable clothes, she returned to her bedroom.
Sitting on the bed, she pondered over the things Azen had proposed today.
She was already contemplating marriage, especially after attending Bellanis’ coming-of-age banquet. Thus, the matter weighed heavily on her mind.
When she was troubled, she always opened the window and looked out into the clear garden.
As she gazed out this time, she noticed Azen stepping outside the mansion.
Quickly changing into shoes, Roa descended stealthily towards the backyard where he was.
