Chapter 1
“Has the curse been lifted?”
The first to break the silence was Roa.
Even though Azen was right beside her, she missed him dearly.
Gazing at his side profile, Roa tilted her head and rested it on his shoulder.
“At least time won’t turn back anymore.”
Azen raised his hand and gently stroked Roa’s long hair as she continued talking.
“Is it really the end if I die now?”
There was no longer a chance to change this twisted fate.
The moments of Azen dying flashed through Roa’s mind again. Just recalling it made her vision blurry.
“I don’t want to see Azen die anymore…”
She tightly embraced Azen with both arms. She felt his firm skin and warmth, telling her he was still alive.
However, she couldn’t easily let go of her anxiety and the fear he would disappear at any moment.
“It won’t happen.”
Azen brushed aside Roa’s hair and pressed his lips against her exposed forehead.
Chu- The sensation of his lips and the sound that followed felt pleasant.
“Let’s have the wedding before the imperial ball.”
There wasn’t much time. They couldn’t afford a grand wedding like when they first married.
At this moment, where life wavered, it wasn’t important.
“Don’t worry about anything.”
Azen comforted Roa. However, he wasn’t unnerved. His own feelings mirrored Roa’s.
“You’ve worked hard all this time on your own.”
Just as he willingly risked his life for Roa, she did the same for him.
He wished he could love her more. Why did she insist on loving him the same, experiencing pain just like him?
He knew she belonged in a place where she could always smile beautifully and lovingly, like a pretty flower in a greenhouse.
“From now on, leave everything to me.”
Azen’s comforting words gradually calmed the pounding heartbeat that had anxiously thudded in Roa’s chest.
“No matter what happens, I’ll make you happy.”
His sweet, whispering voice was pleasant. So were his arms, pulling her close, and the gentle touch of his breath.
Lifting her head, Roa met Azen’s gaze.
“I won’t let you die, and I’ll survive until the end.”
His crimson eyes, focused only on her, were also comforting.
“Azen…”
Caught up in the events that led them into the shackles of misfortune, Roa failed to properly look at Azen.
“Don’t cry, Roa.”
Azen wiped away the damp traces of tears on Roa’s cheek with his thumb.
“Today will be the last time you cry so sorrowfully.”
Azen covered Roa’s small face with his palms. Leaning in, he licked away the tears streaming down her face.
His lips moved slowly to her sensitive ear.
“Don’t remember anything. Just focus on me at this moment.”
Roa nodded, releasing tension from her entire body and leaning comfortably against Azen.
“Ha, hm…”
A hot tongue flicked across an earlobe, and gentle lips delicately embraced it. Roa let out a peculiar moan at the stimulating sensation.
His hands moved up so gently that she wasn’t startled. They traced along the curved waist and upward, enveloping the supple mounds with a firm grip.
As stimulation overwhelmed her, Roa’s mind turned blissfully blank.
At this moment, she didn’t think about anything else but focused on this act of sharing and confirming the love between the two.
“I love you. I love you, Azen.”
Actions alone weren’t enough. Embracing Azen so closely that their bodies melded together, Roa conveyed her feelings verbally through words.
Azen had been exploring Roa’s neck and momentarily paused.
He lifted his head to gaze at the woman in front of him. Her eyes, half unfocused due to thrill, were endearing.
“Such words should be left for a man to say first.”
Azen chuckled as he looked at Roa, but she couldn’t bring herself to join in his laughter.
“I can’t wait.”
She wanted to be earnest at the moment of conveying her feelings.
“I’m in a hurry. The thought that Azen might disappear from my grasp at any moment…”
Even with both arms and legs tightly wrapped around him, it wasn’t enough to stop such fears.
“I won’t disappear.”
Azen held Roa’s hand and entwined his fingers with hers, gently clasping them.
“Take a little more time.”
He gently laid Roa, who was still crying, on the bed. She was completely dominated by the shadow cast by Azen, who had risen above her.
“I love you, Roa.”
He brought their joined hands to his lips and kissed the back of hers. While doing so, his eyes remained fixated on Roa’s.
“I love you, I love you.”
To ensure she wouldn’t feel anxious anymore, he engraved his sincere feelings deep into her heart.
“I will never let you go. I’ll never leave or disappear.”
Man and woman’s bodies entwined completely.
Azen grabbed Roa’s chemise and pulled it down. Her snow-white skin was revealed vividly, and a scratch, like a blemish, remained where he had torn off the collar.
“Promise.”
Azen licked the tender skin above the mark. Roa squirmed at the ticklish sensation.
Kisses fell on the nape of her neck, collarbone, and rounded shoulders, leaving traces of crimson passion.
“Sir Azen dedicates his knightly oath to Lady Clarion.”
A promise from two years ago that he failed to keep.
Only after two years was he able to dedicate the knight’s oath to his beloved Roa.
Two years ago. It was a fantastically sunny day.
Despite it being past waking time, Roa couldn’t bring herself to leave the comfort of her bed.
“Miss, please get up.”
“Hmm, just a little more sleep.”
“Really now, Miss, you’re already eighteen. Your debutante isn’t that far off, and you still sleep in like a child?”
At the nanny’s teasing, Roa quickly got up.
After a brief shower, she went to greet her family and headed to the back garden.
After strolling through the garden for quite some time and having tea there, she returned to the mansion.
“These are letters for the Young Miss.”
Roa carried a stack of letters on a tray and ascended to her bedroom.
After changing into more comfortable clothes, she sat at her desk and opened the letters she received from her maid.
She started with the letter from her closest friend, Bellanis.
“Oh my, Bellanis is already preparing for her debutante. How exciting!”
Bellanis lived not far away and had been a very close friend of hers since childhood. Roa was very excited as she received an invitation to Bellanis’ debutante ball.
“I hope she doesn’t go too far, though.”
Once she debuted in society, she would be looking for a marriage partner.
Roa wondered who her friend would marry. It would be disappointing if her closest friend followed her lover and moved far away.
However, Roa’s own debutante ball wasn’t far off either. Just as Bellanis would find her spouse and leave, Roa would also leave this estate soon after her debut.
Roa closed her eyes and imagined who her betrothed might be.
Regardless of the person, she hoped that the mansion’s garden they would share would resemble the natural landscape garden created by her elder brother, Kaylon.
Roa immediately took out paper and a pen. Every time she finished each letter, she responded promptly and sealed it.
Finally, she picked up the last letter and checked the sender.
“Azen Trone?”
The name ‘Azen’ was vaguely familiar, but the appended last name ‘Trone’ was unmistakable.
Gently closing her eyes, Roa recalled a time about four years ago, when her brother Kaylon, a landscape designer, had been invited to a dinner party in return for designing the garden for the Trone Grand Duchy.
Azen was a boy she had met back then. A boy her age who was unfortunate enough to live without recognition and whose existence was denied within the Trone family.
Roa recalled the time when she had provided comfort and encouragement to him.
“Ah, that Azen!”
Roa quickly opened the letter. It contained news that, after meeting in the back garden of the Trone’s residence four years ago, he had developed a dream and had now been knighted.
“Wow, Azen has truly become a knight!”
She felt genuinely pleased, as if it were her own achievement. The boy who seemed so gloomy back then had found hope, pursued his dreams, and achieved them, thanks to her.
It was truly joyous news.
Azen expressed his gratitude to Roa for inspiring him to pursue his dream and requested a meeting.
She readily replied, gladly accepting his proposal, expressing that she would soon attend the debutante ball of her friend Bellanis and suggesting a visit at a convenient time after that.
Soon after, she received a response from him; he wanted to visit on the day she returned from the ball.
“So soon?”
Roa found his haste in setting a date surprising.
Yet, considering the pressing schedule of a newly minted knight, she brushed it off, thinking that he might need to quickly arrange things here and there.
Time passed, and Roa attended Bellanis’ debutante ball.
Although she held a formal ball, her future spouse had already been decided. The ball was more like a small party among close friends.
Roa heard the news that Bellanis would be heading to the Southern territory, far from the capital.
On the carriage ride back to the castle, Roa couldn’t close her eyes even for a moment.
Everything Bellanis did today was something that would soon happen to her as well.
However, unlike Bellanis, Roa’s future husband had not yet been decided. Of course, after her debut, requests from many noblemen of marriageable age would arrive.
Her heart felt uneasy. She was truly beginning to feel like an adult.
“Miss, the bath is ready.”
“I’ll stay in the garden for a bit before going in.”
Upon returning to the residence, Roa didn’t immediately head inside but lingered in the garden.
The natural landscape garden, without flower beds and topiaries, was a rare sight in the Hayden Empire, found only in two places—the county of Clarion and the grand duchy of Trone.
Roa wondered how Azen, who would soon be visiting her, might have changed.
Closing her eyes, she immersed herself in vivid imagination.
Even as a boy, he was tall, and with the training to become a knight, he would have grown even taller and sturdier.
If Azen became her fiancé, and the two of them set up their newlywed home, they could create such a beautiful garden together.
He probably shared similar tastes with her, since he appreciated Kaylon’s garden.
Lost in the waves of her imagination, Roa suddenly snapped out of it, regaining her senses.
“What am I even imagining…?”
They hadn’t even properly greeted each other yet, and here she was already thinking about marriage.
Perhaps it was the aftermath of attending her friend’s debutante ball, but her mind was filled with such thoughts.
Getting ahead of herself, Roa shook her head and blushed in embarrassment.
