Chapter 79
He looked at the liquid in the transparent glass bottle she handed him, and without hesitation, gulped it all down.
With Anais gone, this life was already hell for him anyway. Kylian had hoped what she gave him was poison, something that would swiftly take his life.
Kylian accepted what she gave in desperation.
After taking the potion from Lillith, he fell asleep. And then, because he could see what he wanted, he wanted to remain in eternal slumber.
“Your Majesty.”
“Wife!”
Seeing Anais smiling sadly in front of him made Kylian feel as though his throat was choked.
“Why did you leave me, Wife?”
“Kylian.”
Kylian had no idea that her voice was different from Anais’s.
“What Lady Anais wants is nothing more than for you to be happy.”
He could only see Anais’s face, smiling in front of him.
“Wife, please don’t leave me.”
He was not ashamed to cry now. All the emotions she had awakened in him, everything she had taught him, still remained within him. All the attempts to not cry in front of Anais in the past, to appear strong, felt pointless.
“Kylian.”
“Please. Wife, please.”
Kylian knelt at Anais’ feet and placed her hand on his cheek.
“If you were going to teach me these feelings, you shouldn’t have left.”
“Kylian.”
“My heart hurts too much. How can I go on without you, Wife?”
His tears continued to wet her hand as she gazed at him.
“If you’re leaving, please take me with you.”
“Kylian.”
“I don’t want to live without you, Wife.”
Even as he pleaded, she only smiled faintly.
“But surely Lady Anais wouldn’t wish for that, would she?”
Kylian took her hand as if pleading with her.
“My happiness lies in seeing you alive and happy.”
“If that’s not what Lady Anais wishes?”
“Then please take me with you.”
A whistling sound emanated from Kylian’s throat, but he was too afraid of losing his wife before him to feel the pain.
The days of taking Lillith’s potion continued. He couldn’t stop because each time he took the potion, he could meet Anais.
Kylian’s condition worsened gradually.
So, Lillith and Lewarren, who used to gather occasionally with Kylian to carry out retribution during Anais’s lifetime, were now gathered as a last resort to persuade Kylian. Kylian didn’t listen to anyone, but he seemed to hear their words.
“What’s this?”
“Lady Anais’s diary.”
“These scraps?”
“Yes.”
Kylian looked at the charred remains of paper as though it were a burnt offering.
“If we ask the Tower Master, it seems like it can be restored. Should we do that?”
“…Do it right away.”
“Snap out of it.”
“Lewarren.”
Having stood by his side, Lewarren finally spoke.
“Please, just kill me.”
“What?”
“Please kill me.”
Kylian said with a smile. Lewarren seemed about to say something, then, looking at his smile, he could not bring himself to respond, contorting his face as if he was about to cry.
“You can do it? You’re the High Priest of Destruction.”
“…….”
“Please.”
Kylian got out of bed, not bothering to adjust the clothes slipping off his shoulders, and approached Lewarren.
“Pull yourself together.”
“Please, just kill me. Please.”
Lewarren looked at Kylian in astonishment. He was even more taken aback by the sincerity in Kylian’s eyes.
“What’s the point of living like this? Please kill me. I’ll give you everything you want. The throne, I’ll give it to you. Riches? I’ll give you the entire royal treasury.”
“Kylian.”
“The seal, how about the seal? I’ll give you that too. Or perhaps a mine?”
“Kylian.”
“Give you the Quipnos Empire? Then will you kill me?”
“Kylian!”
“Please, just kill me!”
As Lewarren stepped back, Kylian slipped and fell to the ground.
“How long will you keep this up? Have you forgotten that you’re the Emperor?”
“Ha… Hahaha… Damn Emperor… What Emperor…”
“Get a hold of yourself. Think about the people of the empire waiting for you. You can’t live for yourself alone. You became the Emperor, didn’t you?”
“I wanted to become Emperor because of Anais.”
“Yes, Anais wanted you to become Emperor too.”
At the mention of Anais’s name, Kylian regained his senses, only to be overcome with sorrow again.
“You were supposed to become a good monarch. She hoped for the day you would become emperor.”
“But my wife has left me.”
“She didn’t leave! Don’t you understand the sacrifice she made for you?”
“Such sacrifice was unnecessary.”
“What do you think Anais would feel seeing you like this?”
Even at Lewarren’s words, he remained unaffected. He could only feel the endless resentment of Anais leaving him.
He realized that his ideals were futile, and the righteous path he believed in was wrong from the start.
He had come to the realization far too late that Anais stood at the end of everything he had desired.
Righteousness didn’t matter.
Being right didn’t matter either.
Right and wrong were things that only mattered to the living. He had become a dead man the day Anais died.
“Don’t think that Anais left you.”
Kylian heard Lewarren’s footsteps leaving. However, he remained on the floor, not bothering to get up. He had no reason to continue with his daily life.
Anais, who would look at him, was no longer there. After a very long time, morning dawned. The rain had stopped, and the sun was rising, illuminating the room.
“Your Majesty.”
Lilith, holding the diary, knelt beside him.
“There is a way to save Lady Anais.”
Whispering hope to him like salvation.
