Chapter 120
Leonhard still clenched his fist, feeling the lingering tension.
‘Celine…’
It had only been three hours since she accepted his proposal. The tremor of that moment still shook him.
It was an impulsive proposal.
He received an education befitting the heir to the Grand Duke and naturally knew how a proposal should be conducted. However, at that time, he had no leisure to choose the optimal time and place.
His only thought was to reveal his sincerity to Celine, who was uneasy.
Fortunately, the sight of a flower, the one that Celine liked, allowed him to follow the longstanding tradition in the North of proposing with a flower symbolizing spring.
He felt like he was living a dream until Celine joyfully leaped into his arms, and after a lingering embrace, they made their way to Bernoulli Castle.
The dream approached reality when he reported to the Grand Ducal couple. While they seemed slightly surprised, the Grand Ducal couple exchanged meaningful glances as if they expected it.
When Leonhard was about to leave the office with a relieved heart, the Duke casually spoke.
“Leonhard, it won’t be easy. Not for you or for Celine.”
It was such an obvious fact that Leonhard simply nodded.
“I will stake everything to protect Celine.”
The Grand Duke seemed relieved.
“Then, it’s settled.”
Leonhard closed the door and stood still, gazing up at the ceiling. Unlike the glamorous and splendid structures in the South or the Imperial Palace, a subtle yet elegant pattern caught his eye.
Now, all of this belonged to Celine.
He thought about the words he had just heard with a stern face.
‘…Father is right.’
Being the lover of the heir to the Grand Duke and being the next Grand Duchess were entirely different matters. Moreover, if it became known that his curse had been completely lifted, there would undoubtedly be more than a few families eager to marry their daughters to Leonhard, trying to beat Celine.
He had to protect her from all those storms.
‘Wait…’
Leonhard froze for a moment.
…Did Celine know about all these facts?
Naturally, she wouldn’t. She seemed to know nothing about the North or even the entire empire.
It was only then that he realized that he was heading towards Celine’s quarters. While it was a different direction from his original destination, it didn’t matter.
He had to meet her.
Of course, on the other side of the open door stood Leonhard. He looked more serious than anyone else, as always.
A smile spread across Celine’s face.
Seeing him, it felt like the fatigue that had accumulated all day was melting away. As she grabbed his hand and pulled him into the room, she didn’t question why he came. She was just happy to see the person she wanted to see.
The two sat side by side on a long sofa, feeling each other’s warmth. Leonhard seemed like he had something to say, but he simply held her hand without uttering a word.
“Natasha is worried that I’ll be extremely busy from now on.”
“Why is that?”
“Because of the engagement ceremony.”
“Ah.”
He nodded.
Naturally, both of them would have to have a grand engagement ceremony befitting the heir to the Grand Duke. However, Leonhard didn’t miss the tired expression that Celine revealed through her words.
“If you don’t want to… we don’t have to go through with it.”
“It’s okay.”
Celine shook her head.
“Letting the Empire know that Leonhard is my man isn’t a bad thing.”
“Really?”
He recalled the concerns he had just thought of and gave a bitter smile.
“Indeed, if it becomes known that the curse has been lifted, who knows what proposals I might receive? It’s probably better to take care of it before that happens.”
“…Proposals?”
Although Leonhard hesitated for a moment, he remembered his promise to Celine not to hide anything from her.
“Until now, the reason I haven’t had any marriage proposals is because of the curse. If people find out that the curse is lifted…”
“There will be marriage proposals from all over the Empire.”
Celine nodded.
“I see. I’ll do my best to prepare for the engagement ceremony.”
“Celine, I don’t want you to be more exhausted than this.”
Leonhard spoke sincerely.
She had already done so much, and he didn’t want to burden her with the obligation of an engagement ceremony if she didn’t desire it.
“Natasha might have exaggerated a bit.”
“Do you think so?”
Celine smiled softly.
“Well, even if I participate actively, it won’t be that difficult.”
“I, I see.”
Leonhard realized that Celine was speaking as she pleased, but he didn’t feel bad about it. As a moment of silence settled, she gazed into his eyes and opened her mouth again.
“Thank you for coming, Leonhard.”
“….?”
“I just happened to miss you.”
His face slightly flushed.
It felt as if Celine had seen right through his feelings.
“I missed you too.”
“We only parted for a few hours!”
“You said you missed me as well.”
“That’s true.”
Celine chuckled softly, leaning against Leonhard’s chest and gazing at the wall. A painting depicting the barren yet beautiful landscape of the northern regions caught his eye. It was only now that he truly remembered the reason he came to this place.
“Celine, there’s something I want to tell you.”
“What is it?”
Although she responded with a light question, the conversation was about to take a much heavier turn. Still, Leonhard didn’t hesitate, as it was something the person who would soon be his wife had to know.
“We need to distance ourselves from the imperial family.”
“….!”
Celine widened her eyes, staring intently at him.
“Though the Grand Duke already did that, right?”
“No.”
Leonhard shook his head.
“Father can’t refuse any imperial decree, no matter the consequences. Even if it harms me… I do the same.”
Celine bit her lip.
His words could be interpreted as treason at first glance.
“What if the imperial family decides to leave Leonhard alone?”
“Then, so be it.”
Uttering so, he tightened his embrace around Celine.
“I will make sure nothing harms you.”
“Even if it brings harm, I don’t mind.”
Celine, who had made a quick decision, answered slowly.
Leonhard, who had been faithfully devoted to the imperial family until now, had changed due to the power of Lute Dave and the unknown boy. She, as the future Grand Duchess, also didn’t want to blindly pledge loyalty to the imperial family.
“I want to do what Leonhard believes is right.”
“…Celine.”
His voice carried a sense of determination.
“If it weren’t for you, I would have accepted His Majesty’s orders blindly, even if I thought it was unfair.”
“Me?”
Celine asked, a little surprised.
“Yes. Until you appeared, I could only think of a life devoted to loyalty, forever hunting down warlocks.”
He gently stroked her hair, which was softer and shinier than ever.
“Though because of you, I’ve discovered a new world.”
At those words, she looked at him with a hint of impulsiveness. He gazed back at her with eyes more intense than ever.
“I want to be someone you… And our child can be proud of.”
“Leonhard…”
Celine slowly approached Leonhard, but he was a bit quicker.
As he gently pulled her close, a dizzying sensation overwhelmed her. They explored each other’s tender lips. Heat, starting from their heads, spread throughout their bodies, and soon, Celine found herself gasping for air.
Just as his proposal had changed their relationship, she couldn’t be satisfied with the same old boundaries. She momentarily escaped from his firm chest, breathing heavily. Her heart pounded as if it would burst at any moment.
“Celine.”
She could sense the unrestrained passion in his voice and gaze.
Desire.
As she slowly moved towards the bed, Leonhard rose from his seat, matching her pace. Celine sat on the bed, looking up at him.
She loved this man with all her heart, in every world she knew.
Certainly, Leonhard felt the same way.
“Leonhard.”
No more words were necessary.
Feeling his presence, she closed her eyes.
Time passed quickly, like flowing water.
Leonhard and Celine’s engagement ceremony was grandly held in front of guests from across the empire. Contrary to concerns, there were only a few incidents during the ceremony.
Danny mentioned it was all because of Celine’s reputation.
“Who would dare take Lute’s place? If they survive for a day, it’s considered lucky.”
“Is, is that so?”
“Indeed.”
Danny nodded vigorously.
“Agathirsus and even the structures made by the warlock in the Imperial Palace, you destroyed it all by yourself.”
“The position of Grand Duchess wasn’t meant to do that.”
“Lute, you didn’t know!”
Danny explained with a joyful expression.
“Do you know how Lord Leonhard responded to the first marriage talk? He said if they’re going to be his spouse, they should be capable enough to take care of the boss monster on their own…”
As Danny trailed off, Celine followed her gaze with a slightly surprised face. It was because Leonhard was looking at them with an amused face.
“That was supposed to be a secret.”
“For, forgive me.”
After Danny sincerely apologized, she discreetly left.
“Was that really true?”
“It seems to have worked well.”
“Leonhard!”
Celine couldn’t contain her laughter.
“It’s a bit exaggerated, but… that’s true.”
“Let’s say so.”
As he pulled her, who continued to laugh, into his arms from behind, Celine muttered as she fell into Leonhard’s warm embrace.
“I wish time would stop.”
“Why?”
“Because nothing has happened yet.”
The conflict between the Imperial Palace and the North continued to be one of her concerns. Despite the fact that the Imperial Palace had not yet given Leonhard any unreasonable tasks and there were no visible conflicts, a full-scale clash was just a matter of time.
Leonhard rested his face on Celine’s shoulder.
“I wish time would go on.”
“Why?”
“If time stops, nothing will happen. Not only the bad ones… but the good things, too.”
“That makes sense.”
Celine agreed.
Leonhard’s words were right. She wanted to live a lifetime with him. So, if time were to stop here, she would miss out on half of that lifetime.
“We’ll be fine, all of us.”
“Is that foresight?”
Instead of answering, Celine just smiled.
Now that the game was over, she couldn’t even pretend to be a prophet. Still, she was confident… Just like how she changed the dreadful future, she believed that no matter what challenges lay ahead, they could overcome them.
Together with Leonhard.
