Chapter 112
Leonhard tried to maintain composure, yet a cold fire was burning in his chest.
Cordelia Unsorem.
The ill-fated Princess, publicly announced to have died in a carriage accident before he took his first steps. She was a prodigy who was the master of three dragons, born a wizard. However, as soon as he vanquished the first warlock, he learned her true identity.
Cordelia Unsorem cursed the Imperial Family that had cast her out for becoming a warlock.
Her pursuit of dark magic was solely to enhance the Empire’s power. However, a princess turned warlock was nothing but a time bomb for the Imperial Family.
The little patience remaining within the Imperial Family came to an end when Cordelia, in her experiments, killed nine servants. Driven out, her cry that the sole heir to the throne, Prince Ricardo, would never ascend to power still haunted the Empire.
Leonhard wanted to inform Celine of all these facts, but time was running short. Therefore, he gave a simple response to Cordelia.
“Now, you’re nothing but a criminal of the empire.”
“By all means.”
Cordelia gave a bitter smile.
“If you kill me, you will become an executioner of an Imperial Family member, young Bernoulli.”
Leonhard didn’t respond.
If he were to report to the Imperial Family that he had killed Cordelia Unsorem, he might even receive a reward. He might regain the Crown Prince’s long-lost trust. The Crown Prince had been haunted by the fear that Cordelia might come to kill him for a long time.
Regardless, there was no need to correct the enemy’s misconception. Instead of a response, Leonhard adjusted his cloak and informed Celine.
“The goal now is to reach Lou. Go.”
Celine nodded her head.
Under normal circumstances, she would never have backed down. She had sworn not to leave Leonhard alone in his battle against the warlock. But for now, she had to get Lou as far away from the warlock as possible.
As she was about to descend the mountain…
“….!”
Lou let out a long cry, and Celine fell to her knees. It was because the entire mountain began to tremble to the point where she could not possibly stand.
With one knee on the ground, Leonhard muttered quietly.
“…She has cast a barrier on the ground.”
“It’s a way that novices couldn’t even imagine.”
As Cordelia stood firmly, alone on the shaking ground, both Leonhard and Celine realized the situation too late. While the ground crumbled beneath them, a new barrier engulfed them.
Celine tried to save Lou, but she failed, and soon, the three of them fell into a deep darkness.
“Hahahaha…!”
Chilling laughter echoed.
Celine dazedly thought that the laughter sounded somewhat like Leonhard’s voice. As the world turned upside down the next moment, where they were was no longer underground.
‘It’s an illusion!’
She tried to shake herself out of it.
Whatever was forming on her retina would be far from reality.
‘There’s no sunlight.’
Certainly not at this moment. What entered her eyes was a cozy room with a large window pouring in sunshine.
‘….’
Even though she already knew, it was a powerful illusion that elicited admiration.
“Step back.”
Along with Leonhard’s voice, Rashir glowed blue before them.
Celine blinked.
The cozy room flooded with sunlight vanished, replaced by a damp, earthy cave. It felt like she had awakened from a dream, a distant sensation.
“Lou!”
Celine cried out.
She couldn’t believe it had taken her so long to realize that Lou was gone.
“Lou, is gone…”
“I know.”
Leonhard spoke bitterly.
“She’s taken him.”
“We have to find it…’
“Yes, we have to find it before it’s too late.”
He supported the stumbling Celine.
“Celine, pull yourself together. You have to endure more at times like this.”
“….”
When she looked up at him with teary, watery eyes, Leonhard couldn’t find the right words in the emotions reflected in her teary blue-gray eyes. Whatever he said now would only be superficial comfort.
Celine started moving.
At first, it was slow, but gradually, it turned into a swift pace. Leonhard ran with her, trying to match her rhythm as much as he could. The cave was like a labyrinth of passages, but he could sense Cordelia’s traces from all directions. Her movements, initially agile and light, noticeably slowed down after Lou joined them.
A small fortune in their misfortune. It meant they could catch up to Cordelia.
Finally, they caught sight of glimmering golden scales.
“….!”
Celine suppressed the impulse to call out for Lou. For now, she needed to leave everything to Leonhard as much as possible and stay a step back. It seemed like Leonhard knew a lot about the self-proclaimed Princess.
They moved closer to the wriggling Lou.
“Lou…?”
A choked word escaped Celine’s lips.
Cordelia had vanished, and Lou was lying on the ground, groaning.
Suddenly, Leonhard blocked her path.
“It’s a trap.”
Celine bit her lip.
She wanted to rush to Lou immediately, but upon reflection, she knew Leonhard was right. Cordelia wouldn’t have just left Lou alone, as much as she desired him.
Moments later, Lou melted before her eyes.
She let out a sigh of relief. It was just an illusion created by Cordelia.
Leonhard smirked.
“She seems to be quite distressed.”
“Yes?”
“If the magic is crumbling this easily, it means she’s exhausted elsewhere. It must mean Lou isn’t such an easy target.”
Hope filled Celine’s heart, but she could only say one thing.
“Quickly, let’s hurry.”
Leonhard nodded.
They started running through the cave.
After what felt like some time, the golden scales came into view before Celine’s eyes again. Even though she tried not to get her hopes up, when she saw Cordelia with a deeply furrowed face, she realized it was real this time.
Leonhard slowly spoke up.
“Cordelia Unsorem. By the order of His Majesty, the Emperor… I will execute you.”
“How dare you!”
Cordelia raised her head sharply.
“What have I done? Tell me, young Bernoulli. Have I harmed you or your family? Have I killed even one person from this region?”
“Haven’t you killed numerous people so far? That alone warrants punishment.”
“Punishment?”
Cordelia raised her head and chuckled.
“I just wanted power. Power for our Empire!”
“…Can you say the same thing now?”
“Yes.”
Celine was taken aback.
It was because Cordelia’s words were certainly not deceitful.
Her eyes blazed with conviction.
“Back then, I had no choice but to come out on my own because my power was insufficient. But what if I were to obtain even stronger power?”
“….”
“My brother would have to accept me, right? That child is such a person.”
Cordelia was lost in a moment of ecstasy.
“I tried my best… but I was not enough on my own. Other comrades were too foolish to be my opponents. I needed my old friends, the dragons.”
She felt nauseated by the loving gaze Cordelia cast upon Lou.
“I rescued several young dragons, but they couldn’t withstand the dark magic and perished quickly. But the grown ones were too weak to submit… When I saw this one, I thought it was fate.”
A shiver ran down Celine’s spine. She had to try not to show her tears.
…To Cordelia, Lou, who was only physically mature, was the perfect prey.
“If I had just one more week at that time…! But it’s done. Now, this one will be entirely mine.”
Leonhard retorted coldly.
“Not happening. You will die right here.”
A clear smirk played across Cordelia’s face.
“Son of Frederick, you can never kill me.”
Without a response, Leonhard tightened his grip on Rashir. Seeing Celine shivering beside him, he didn’t want to waste any more time.
“Do you recognize the shadow of death looming over you?”
“…Stop it.”
Leonhard frowned.
Clearly, Celine was talking to him.
“Celine, don’t listen to her words. She’s just…”
“No.”
Celine shook her head and looked at Cordelia.
“If it’s about the curse, I know about it.”
Cordelia smiled as if she found it amusing.
“How much have you told your adorable lover, young Bernoulli?”
“Shut your mouth.”
Although he warned in a low voice, Cordelia didn’t stop.
“But it seems your head is filled with quite interesting things.”
Celine gave Leonhard a sidelong glance for a moment before cautiously speaking up.
“You are the key to the curse. That’s why Leonhard can’t kill you. Isn’t that right?”
“….!”
Leonhard tensed all over.
It had been about three months since he learned about the curses spun by the warlocks. While he had researched the curse, he had never considered sparing the warlocks to escape that fate. The warlocks had to die, and if he didn’t step up, others would be sacrificed.
Cordelia’s expression in response to Celine’s words was truly unexpected.
“Very precise. I appreciate you saving me the trouble of explaining.”
“Cordelia Unsorem…!”
“Does Frederick teach you to address nobility like that, Leonhard?”
“Leonhard, now!”
As Celine screamed, Leonhard didn’t hesitate any longer. She had been the only one holding him back all this time, and now that she had given permission, nothing could stop him.
Rashir was thrust towards Cordelia.
Cordelia resisted with various spells, but she was no match for Leonhard. The next moment, Rashir’s blade was aimed at Cordelia’s neck.
“Stop!”
Celine’s voice pierced Leonhard’s ears. He obeyed her voice and subdued Cordelia, pausing for a moment.
That was when it happened.
A small figure wedged itself between him and Cordelia. Frozen in place, Leonhard could only watch as Celine pulled Ringzor from her embrace and struck Cordelia’s neck, causing black blood to gush out like a fountain.
“Celine!”
He tried to restrain Celine, but it was already too late as life was swiftly leaving Cordelia’s body.
…At Celine’s hand.
He swiftly pushed Celine away as Cordelia rapidly lost her form and held Celine tightly in his arms. There was no need to ask why she had done it.
If he were to end the warlock’s life, the curse would be fulfilled.
Celine murmured in his embrace.
“Leonhard… it’s heavy.”
Still, he couldn’t let go of her.
Not in a lifetime.
