Chapter 187
“Daniel.”
“….Azela.”
Oddly, even though he was sure she would return alone, she was still accompanied by Zagnac. Daniel’s face, which had been smiling, stiffened like dry land.
“Why…?”
He couldn’t bring himself to ask why the two of them had come together, but Zagnac smiled as if he had heard the unspoken question and shrugged. While he used to visit here only to see Azela, he had become a visitor, bringing her along now.
Azela was equally new to this situation as Daniel. The Todd mansion hadn’t changed much since she left. Before, she used to greet guests by his side, but now she had come as a guest.
“Why, why did you come?”
It was where his youth had melted away.
As Azela looked around the mansion with a feeling of longing, she heard Daniel’s cautious voice. There were a few maids cleaning the mansion. Just by looking at them, she could tell how excited he had been to hear the news of her visit.
“I heard that Sylvia left. Is it true?”
“…Yes. Did you come to see that?”
“It wasn’t exactly my purpose.”
As she glanced around the empty mansion, Azela suddenly smiled and looked straight at Daniel.
“But now that I’m here, it’s quite refreshing.”
“….!”
He frowned at her words, but he couldn’t say anything to Azela. It was because of Zagnac, who was standing right there. He couldn’t afford to treat Zagnac lightly, given the rumors about him.
Watching Daniel’s reaction, Zagnac just smiled contentedly.
“What’s the reason you came?”
“I don’t have a big reason.”
As Azela replied casually in response to Daniel’s question, even Zagnac looked at her with curiosity. The gaze of everyone in the mansion was fixed on Azela. Had she come here to tease Daniel? Or perhaps due to lingering sentiments for the mansion that was gradually falling apart?
It was an inexplicable reason.
Smiling as if she knew all their emotions, Azela continued.
“Sorry, though I’m sure you already know that I don’t have any feelings for you anymore, right? Whether this place falls apart or not, it’s no longer my concern.”
“…So?”
“It’s simple.”
Azela’s hand gestured outside the mansion.
“Before this place completely crumbles into ruins.”
“….”
“I came to retrieve Irene, who was buried outside.”
Irene would be upset to be buried out there.
Azela laughed at the thought. In the meanwhile, her words left Daniel with a blank expression. He hadn’t considered it at all.
Retrieving Irene…
Daniel laughed with a sense of disappointment. Then, as if to imply that he wouldn’t give in to everything she wanted, he shook his head vigorously.
“That’s not possible.”
It was a childish idea.
Azela was nonchalant in response to Daniel’s refusal. She already expected that he would react this way. There was no way he would send her off with a pleasant farewell.
“Irene was a maid working here in Todd’s mansion. When she died, she was still a maid in Todd’s mansion, so it’s only natural that she’s buried here.”
“Though you didn’t plan to bury Irene here, did you? If I hadn’t pleaded with you, you would have buried the deceased Irene deep in the forest, right?”
Her discussion about the deceased Irene was different from the past. In the past, whenever Irene’s name came up, she seemed to lose her mind. Even though she pretended to be calm, there was a hint of sadness in her expression.
But now, that wasn’t the case.
She appeared nonchalant and had seemingly come to terms with Irene’s death. Daniel couldn’t strike a blow against her, and he realized that.
Daniel clenched his lower lip tightly and spoke.
“Daniel.”
“….”
“Don’t act so recklessly. You’ve never properly cared for Irene, have you? Technically, Irene belonged to me as Countess Todd. So, it’s only natural for me to take Irene with me.”
He sighed and shrugged his shoulders.
“However, she has been buried on Todd’s estate with my permission, or you can come here whenever you want to visit. I’d welcome that.”
Daniel’s half-hearted remark caused Zagnac to burst into laughter. It was because it was a desperate attempt to persuade her one way or another.
Similarly, Azela seemed to sense Daniel’s thoughts and let out a light sigh. Then, she turned her head and looked at Zagnac beside her.
“Zagnac.”
“Yes.”
“Go back to the mansion first.”
“….!”
Daniel and Zagnac both wore astonished expressions at Azela’s words. Zagnac grabbed her arm in surprise.
On the other hand, Daniel couldn’t conceal the smile that crept onto his face. Of course, Azela was destined to return, but Zagnac had no idea how passionate their love had been. Even when countless men whispered words of love to Azela, she always returned to Daniel.
The ending had always been with Daniel.
So, this time was no different.
Daniel smiled contentedly.
“Azela.”
“It’s okay, Zagnac. Just go back.”
Azela gently brushed away Zagnac’s hand that held her arm and patted the back of his hand. Although her eyes conveyed the message not to worry, Zagnac couldn’t help but feel concerned. His worry was not so much about her having a change of heart but more about what Daniel might do to her.
“…Alright.”
However, it was Azela’s decision.
Zagnac couldn’t say anything more. After alternating his gaze between Daniel and Azela for a while, he let out a sigh and turned to leave.
“If you ever need anything, call me. Understand?”
He told her to call him when he was no longer a devil, though he couldn’t come immediately with just a call. Regardless, Azela appreciated the sentiment, and she nodded her head a couple of times with a smile.
Confirming her nod, he turned and left the mansion. Then, as she turned her head, Azela looked at Lina, who seemed unsure of what to do.
“Lina.”
“Yes, yes, Mistress! Aack… no. Du, Duchess.”
“Could you prepare some tea in the parlor?”
“Yes, yes!”
With Azela’s request, Lina nodded vigorously and hurried toward the kitchen.
“Azela.”
“Daniel, let’s talk.”
Azela smiled and naturally headed toward the parlor. She knew this place well enough to get sick of it. She passed by Daniel, who had been having a bewildered expression. He let out an almost inaudible groan and followed her.
“It seems like there haven’t been many visitors.”
“Ah… yes.”
The parlor was much colder than before. Despite the fact that it used to be bright and well-lit, the lack of lighting made it dim now, and there was a faint smell as if it hadn’t been cleaned for a while.
Azela turned on the lights and took a seat on the sofa, gesturing for him to sit as well.
“What are you doing? Have a seat.”
“Uh, uh…”
Daniel, who had been stroking his neck due to the strange sensation of Azela taking such initiative in this mansion, finally sat down across from her.
Silence filled the room.
While the two of them had been in this parlor together many times before, it was the first time they were sitting face to face like this.
“We haven’t really talked before, have we?”
She took the lead in starting the conversation.
To her words, Daniel nodded his head with a puzzled look.
It was true. They hadn’t talked much. After Azela had left like that, it had always been Daniel clinging to her one-sidedly. This was the first time they were having a real conversation. Or perhaps they had talked like this before, maybe just before she left?
He looked at Azela with a blank face.
It was clear that the girl he had seen and remembered was a young teenager. Yet now, the woman sitting before him exuded an air of elegance, her face having matured, unlike the girl from the past.
