Chapter 43
“Lady Iris is not at home.”
Count Shunen’s maid opened her mouth when she saw Carinne at the mansion.
She wondered where she had gone so early in the morning. Carinne didn’t know where she had gone, but she thought she had found out. She was worried about Iris, and if she didn’t apologize as soon as possible, the misunderstanding would deepen.
“Where did she go?”
“Well…”
The maid hesitated and couldn’t continue her words.
Seeing that, she had a strange feeling. Carinne clapped her hands and shouted through the crack in the door.
“Iris! Are you in there?”
“Ah, lady, she’s not at home!”
Even though the maid was taken aback and blocked her in front of her, Carinne didn’t care and shouted even louder.
“Iris, I’m really sorry! I came to explain yesterday’s incident!”
“Lady, if you do this, I will be scolded!”
“I’m really sorry! It’s because of that, you know… what happened yesterday…”
In such situations, it was best to be honest. Carinne was about to blurt out what happened yesterday, when a pale and slender hand rested on the maid’s shoulder.
It was Iris’ hand.
“It’s okay. You can go inside now.”
Iris’ eyes were bloodshot and red.
‘…Did she cry because of yesterday’s incident?’
She felt like trash.
‘I wish she’d get angry… or throw tantrums. I didn’t expect her to cry.’
“Iris… I’m really sorry.”
When a person felt really sorry, they couldn’t speak.
Iris’ eyes were swollen. Unwiped tear stains clung to her cheeks, making them look very pitiful. Maybe she cried continuously from the moment she returned home yesterday until now.
“Carinne, why did you leave me? I thought you didn’t like me and left me…”
It seemed like her guess was right. She must have cried a lot since her voice was hoarse as well.
“It’s not like that. Why would I leave you?”
Looking back, Iris had suffered a lot of wounds in her relationships with people. She was ignored and bullied because of her clueless personality.
Even though she had a cheerful personality, it was not an experience that could be easily forgotten. However, her friend who came with her said she would be right back and disappeared, never to return.
From Iris’ perspective, she could only misunderstand that she had been abandoned.
“Then why…”
Iris sniffled and burst into tears.
Seeing her crying like that, Carinne felt like she should just go and put herself in the trashcan.
“I’m really sorry.”
As she hugged Iris tightly, she patted her back and apologized repeatedly. Iris didn’t stop sobbing and held Carinne’s hand, pulling her into the mansion.
Her room was not much different from the last time during the trial, except for the tear stains on the pink pillow. As Iris plopped down on the bed and tightly hugged the pillow, Carinne stood in front of her, feeling like a new employee about to give her first presentation.
It was time to explain.
“So, what happened was… I fall asleep as soon as I drink alcohol. On my way back from buying clothes, someone gave me a glass of fruit ade, and I had a sip, but it turned out to have alcohol in it.”
Iris widened her eyes, wiping away her tears.
“So, I fell asleep right away. Archen took me home when I fell asleep.”
“….”
“I’m really sorry. I should have checked if the drink had alcohol. It was my carelessness.”
She wasn’t directly at fault. Still, she wasn’t completely blameless either. Considering that Iris was waiting for her, she should have been more cautious before drinking it.
“I didn’t leave you because I didn’t like you. You’re my precious friend.”
Carinne spoke with strength in every word. It was her sincere and genuine feelings. Iris was the only person who accepted her as she was, without prejudice. Such a friend who accepted her as she was could not be found again.
However, Iris didn’t accept the apology, nor did she refuse it. She just sat there and looked at her. Perhaps her anger hadn’t subsided yet.
Carinne bit her lip as she looked down at the floor. In a moment of carelessness, the friendship they had built up disappeared.
“Iris, I’m really sorry. I’ll go now.”
She tried to turn around.
It was at that moment that Iris stood up and hugged her tightly.
“Carinne, don’t go.”
A slender, pale hand gently wrapped around her back. Carinne was startled and stiffened for a moment but quickly understood the situation and reached out to embrace Iris as well. Since Iris was shorter than her, her head nestled against Carinne’s neck.
Their warm body temperatures flowed through their bodies, connecting them.
“Carinne, you’re my dearest friend too.”
Iris said, her head still resting on Carinne’s shoulder.
Why did her eyes become moist upon hearing Iris’ words? Carinne quickly wiped away the tears that had gathered in her eyes, making sure Iris didn’t notice. Crying and hugging each other was certainly touching, but it didn’t suit her nature.
“So, does that mean you forgive me?”
“Of course.”
Iris uttered, lifting her head and holding onto Carinne’s shoulders.
As she returned to her previous cheerful expression, Carinne smiled along with her. They gazed at each other with affectionate eyes. Even without speaking, they could feel what the other was thinking so well.
How much time has passed like that?
After completely wiping away the tears from her face, Iris glanced down the hallway, closed the door, and lowered her voice.
“So, did you confess to the aide?”
Even though her eyes were still bloodshot, there was no longer a trace of sadness in her expression. Her amethyst-like eyes sparkled with curiosity.
“Huh?”
Carinne asked, her face full of confusion.
What was she talking about all of a sudden?
“You said you had a drink with the aide. Weren’t you in a good mood together? It would have been a perfect time to confess!”
Iris exclaimed, her imagination running wild.
Did she expect an answer like, ‘I confessed to Archen, and we’re officially dating from today’? Unfortunately, such a thing didn’t happen, so Carinne decided to summarize what had happened vaguely. She didn’t know how honest she should be.
“It wasn’t the right situation. It’s a bit complicated to explain… Anyway, it wasn’t a situation to confess.” Carinne raised her head, recalling Archen’s dark and gloomy face.
Confessing in that atmosphere? That didn’t make sense at all.
“I see…”
Iris looked disappointed. It seemed as if she had failed in her own confession.
“In my opinion, if one person confesses, they should start dating right away.”
“Ahaha…”
Carinne laughed, hoping that would be the case.
Well, she would soon find out if Iris’ words were true. Carinne had already decided what to say to Archen at Duke Lucas’ mansion.
“What about you? Did anything happen with Duke Lucas?”
Carinne also had something she wanted to ask her. What did they talk about at the bar? Did they become closer while exchanging drinks, and so on?
“No.”
Iris replied casually. That was the end of it.
“Oh, I see…”
She tried her best not to show her surprise. It was because Carinne had hoped that if Iris and Duke Lucas were put together, they would somehow end up together, just like in the original story, though it seemed that wasn’t the case.
But still, she couldn’t believe they were alone together and didn’t say anything. So, she decided to ask again.
“Are you sure you didn’t talk about anything?”
“Well, not really. He asked me when I started to know you. I answered him.”
Duke Lucas seemed to be quite useless. Asking such unnecessary questions.
“And?”
“That’s all. I couldn’t say anything because I was worried about you. I was thinking, what if you abandoned me and left…”
Iris’ face quickly turned gloomy.
The forgotten sense of guilt filled Carinne’s mind in an instant. She must have had high expectations for the date with her friend. How disappointed she must have felt, thinking she ruined it because of herself.
“Hey, Iris.”
Carinne made up her mind. Since there wouldn’t be anything to do today anyway, and the weather seemed nice, why not?
“How about continuing the date we couldn’t have yesterday? Let’s do it today.”
Iris’ eyes grew wider. Her eyes, which had been dull, suddenly sparkled.
“Sure!”
She exclaimed with an extreme level of joy.
“I’ll get ready right away. Oh, before that, I had a list of places I wanted to visit with a friend. Let me see… Ah!”
Iris pulled out a crumpled piece of paper from what seemed to be a diary or a notebook.
It listed a dessert café, a store for dolls and toys, and even a library, although it wasn’t the most suitable place for a date.
That day, Carinne and Iris spent a delightful time exploring the city together.
