Chapter 44 – Part 2
A chilling wind blew, and the tall branches swayed as if weeping. The wind blew over Regina and me, and the world went quiet as if it had lost its sound. Before I could even hear her answer, I felt someone dragging me into reality as the scenery slowly disappeared.
“Noona!”
The vivid voice sounded like a living person, unlike the person I’d just heard.
“Noona, Yuni!”
I put my hand on the back of the hand of the restless Frey, who grabbed my cheek and anxiously looked down at me.
“Why are you making such a fuss?”
I calmly blurted out, but Frey leaned on me as if collapsing.
“…What is that now? You surprised me.”
“What did I do?”
Frey raised his leaning body and slightly frowned.
“Don’t you remember?”
“I don’t. I wouldn’t have asked if I did.”
I felt sluggish for some reason, so I stretched out and relaxed my body. Frey, who had been quietly touching his chin, opened his mouth.
“Noona, what did you see?”
“Huh?”
“Didn’t you just say that you didn’t know what situation you were in now?”
Nodding my head, he briefly explained how I had just been. He explained that my eyes suddenly went out of focus before my body hardened like a stone, unable to move. Not only that, but I also didn’t answer no matter how much he called me and shook me. I just stayed still as if nailed to the ground.
“For a moment there… haa.”
“What for a moment? You thought I was dead?”
“Don’t joke like that. You know that scares me the most.”
He wiped his face and let out a frustrated sigh. He then checked my body worriedly.
“Are you alright? Can you move now? Should I carry you?”
“You’re just like Lisandro. I’m fine, and I can move.”
“It’s a relief that you’re alright, but it’s a pity that I can’t carry you.”
[ T/N: I also want someone to carry me bridal style, but I look at my weight, and gahhd… the weighing scale is broken tsk tsk ]
Judging from his grinning face, it seemed like it was fortunate that he was back to his usual self. As I motioned Frey to follow me, I decided to visit Regina’s house.
“Do you know the house where Regina used to live?”
“Yes, but there was nothing.”
“…Nothing?”
“Yeah. Even the traces that people lived there. It was an abandoned house.”
As he said that, the house Regina used to live in was on the verge of collapsing.
Was it before we came? If that wasn’t the case, I couldn’t shake off the feeling that Regina would have remembered everything about me before turning back time and that she would have left this place right away.
As I taught Lisandro, I liked to imagine the worst-case scenarios and find ways to prepare for everything.
Crouching down, I put my hands on the floor and closed my eyes. I was wondering if there would be something left like I did when I saw it in a place where I didn’t know if it was an afterimage or a dream, so I sent my holy power to the ground.
Even though I glanced around, there was unfortunately nothing.
“Since when did Regina live here? Since when has this house been empty?”
“It was quite a long time. It has been twenty years.”
Then, Regina wasn’t here yet.
I had a lot of things to ask her when I met her. She was most likely Ma-ri. Even if she was not her, since she was the only one who caused my return, then only she knew what happened after that.
I asked her to save Frey, but she couldn’t, so maybe that’s why she made me return?
“Is Regina coming here after some time?”
I thought her face in the vision looked a little mature, maybe when she was a bit older.
“Maybe she will. Don’t worry, I won’t stop searching.”
Eventually, we decided to go back to the inn once again. While I hadn’t even met Regina and hadn’t seen what ‘I’ had done with Regina, I was starting to get a gist of what might have happened.
“Frey, did you know why Regina saved you?”
“Yes. I heard noona asked her for it.”
I remembered the scene I saw earlier.
“Didn’t you see it for yourself?”
“I only have memories of what I went through — what I have seen with my own eyes.”
Indeed. I never knew about other people’s experiences and memories. I also see past events as either dreams or visions only from my point of view rather than Frey’s. If that was the case, then he didn’t even know what happened earlier.
Instead of hiding it, I decided to talk about it openly.
Since he already had memories of the past, we had the same direction to go forward. I had no reason to hide anything. Rather than hiding and getting entangled with anything, it might be better to open up and get tangled with anything.
“I saw Regina earlier. I saved Regina here, and then I asked her to save you in return.”
“….”
“Regina was a dark wizard, and she probably decided that it was better to use that power to save you.”
If it were me, if I were at my limit to save Frey, then I would certainly have thought of using the powers of a dark wizard. Their black magic tools could have been the last resort to saving him from Lisandro. I didn’t know how I found and asked Regina to save Frey, though maybe it was all a coincidence.
He listened to me in silence and quietly grabbed my fingertips.
“Noona, next time — no, I’ll make sure there will be no next time.”
He pursed his lips before continuing his words.
“Because it was noona. Nothing is impossible. That’s what I’m saying.”
With his eyes filled with me, he clasped my hand and wrapped it in his.
“If that happens next time, never jump into the fire — because of me or anyone else.”
His golden eyes shook in despair, stained with regret as if he had seen me die as he uttered so.
“Even if I get to live by sacrificing you, I won’t be happy. It was like that before, and it was even more now.”
“….”
“I would rather die with you. I will live if we live together. However, if only you die…”
“If I die?”
With a somber atmosphere around us that seemed like he was blaming himself for a fault, I playfully asked him.
“I can’t tolerate it anymore.”
“…Don’t you always tolerate it?”
“Well, should I say that I only do that for you?”
The large hand wrapped around my hand softly fell. The moment it fell, it touched the back of my hand to my fingertips.
