Chapter 121
Tessa smiled when she saw the pre-set dishes and glasses of juice. Before long, Hert brought the toast covered in egg wash. The golden brown toast and the sugar sprinkled on it were already whetting Tessa’s appetite.
“It looks really delicious. Thank you for the food!”
“Be careful because it’s hot.”
“You’re treating me like a kid again.”
“That’s because you’re so clumsy.”
“I’m not like that anymore.”
Tessa grumbled but didn’t feel bad inside, so she took a big bite of the toast. Tessa let out a small scream at the sweet, soft flesh. As expected, this is the best for the morning. Hert also brought a toast and sat down facing her and began to eat his meal.
“What should we do after eating?”
“I think I should stop by the store for a moment. I left something behind.”
“Then let’s go out and buy some groceries.”
“Good. Let’s eat something delicious.”
Hert had a day off from work for the first time in a long while. Tessa planned to relax and enjoy the day with Hert, at least for today. Hert would become busier once Janet would leave the estate next month, so it would be difficult for her to enjoy this kind of leisure time with him for a while.
Tessa was halfway through her toast. Tessa, strangely enough, felt a bit nauseous so she took her glass and drank some water. At that time, Hert suddenly asked.
“I heard you’ve been taking a lot of naps these days.”
“Ah… that. I guess I was tired after opening the store this time. I often fall asleep. Once I get used to it, I’ll be fine.”
Maybe someone saw her dozing off in the store recently and said something to Hert. Tessa answered casually, as if it was nothing. However, Hert had a very serious face.
“Let’s stop by the doctor’s office on our way out today.”
“Suddenly? No, I’m fine…”
“Let’s go today. We should go when we have time. I’m afraid you’ll suddenly get sick when I’m not around. Don’t you remember the last time you kept it a secret from me that you were sick and lost consciousness?”
“Yes… alright.”
When Hert gave a light reprimand, Tessa put down the utensils and nodded. Sometimes Hert tended to prioritize Tessa’s health over his own.
While Tessa liked Hert’s attention to detail, she also wished that he would take more care of his own body. His carefree attitude of saying it was nothing when he occasionally received serious injuries upset Tessa more than once.
“…Are you full already?”
Tessa looked at her toast, with half of it still left on the plate. Hert looked at her with a puzzled look. Normally she would have asked for another one because it was delicious, but he seemed to be having doubts about the fact that she couldn’t eat even one today. Tessa once again opened her mouth as if it was no big deal.
“Huh? Yes. Strangely, I feel like I’m getting full quickly today.”
“You really… You’re not hiding how sick you are these days from me, are you?”
“No. I’m really just feeling full today…”
Tessa shut her mouth for a moment before speaking. A thought passed through her mind as she had been having a particularly hard time sleeping over the past few days and what happened today. It may not have been the case, but are exceptional situations also possible?
“Hey, Her…”
“What’s wrong, do you feel bad?”
“No, that’s not it… What if, really what if… What will it be like if we have a child?”
Hert’s expression instantly hardened at the mention of a child. He was silent for a moment, then reluctantly opened his mouth.
“That won’t happen.”
“But what if…”
“No ifs. Because there will never be any children.”
Tessa closed her mouth to Hert’s stern voice that made her feel cold for a moment. Of course, Tessa knew full well that having a child between them would be difficult. The two, who were born and raised in an orphanage, had already promised from an early age that they would not have children and were thoroughly using contraception.
Hert even took contraceptive pills on his own because the pills were not good for Tessa’s body. The possibility of having a child between such two people was nothing short of extreme.
Even though she knew that, Tessa felt upset.
Really, isn’t it possible to have a child despite the worst odds? But firmly saying that couldn’t be the case felt like completely denying the existence of the child.
Hert opened his mouth again after Tessa did not say anything since before.
“Tessa, I know what you’re thinking. But wasn’t that topic already completely over between us?”
“I know, but…”
“Let’s stop. I don’t want to talk about that topic with you in the morning.”
Before Tessa could stop him, Hert got up, put his plate away, and walked out. Tessa was dumbfounded by what happened so quickly. She knew what a child means to them, but why does he still react this way?
Tessa was becoming increasingly angry at Hert’s attitude as he went out without saying anything.
‘I didn’t say this out of anger… Just…’
Soon, Tessa also got up, put away her plate, and returned to the bedroom. Then, as if to prove that she was angry, she covered her head with a blanket and lay down. She wasn’t going to show her face to Hert until he apologized first.
But ten minutes, thirty minutes… Even after an hour, Hert did not return home.
“What…?”
Tessa was once again dumbfounded and stared blankly into space, then curled up on her back and closed her eyes. She didn’t want to go looking for Hert right now. That’s something her pride wouldn’t allow. As it was a sensitive subject for Hert, it could be that he needed a lot of time to sort out his head.
‘Let’s take a nap and wake up. Then… It will get a little better.’
Tessa went to sleep to calm down her anger.
Drop, drop…
Shaaa…
“Just wake up, Tessa.”
Tessa was awakened by repeated banging on the window. She looked out the window and saw rain pouring down under a dark sky. Tessa quickly closed the window and came out of the room. There was a dead silence in her house.
In an instant lights flashed and thunder struck with a loud sound. Tessa was startled and let out a small scream. It was strangely cold and dark inside her house.
“…Her?”
Tessa looked for Hert and called him. But Hert was nowhere to be seen in the house. Could it be that he hasn’t come home yet? Tessa quickly changed her clothes and, holding an umbrella, went out of the house and took a quick look around. Hert was nowhere to be seen, neither in the small garden they had grown together nor in the chicken coop.
“…Her!”
She tried to shout Hert’s name out loud, but it was soon drowned out by the terrifying sound of pouring rain and thunder. Tessa shivered and headed to Mani’s house.
But as she left the house, she couldn’t help but feel strange all the way. She felt like the entire village was surrounded by silence. Above all, even though it was this dark, there was not a single light on in the house.
“Mani? Mani!”
Tessa arrived at Mani’s house and, in haste, pounded on the door and called out to Mani. However, there was no sound or sign of presence inside the house. Tessa knocked on the door calling for Mani a few more times, but the house was quiet as if no one was there. Eventually, Tessa left Mani’s house and began knocking on other neighbors’ doors.
However, there was no sign of presence in any of the houses.
“What is this…”
Tessa suddenly felt afraid. What happened to the village while she was sleeping? Otherwise, there was no way she would have felt like she was left alone. Tessa went through the village looking for Hert with a tearful face. Still, Hert was nowhere to be seen.
Tessa ended up going into a stable at a random house, led the horse out, and climbed on top of it. She was thinking of going out to the entrance of the village or the downtown area.
The horse neighed and purred as a stranger climbed onto its back.
“Shhh… Sorry. But please help me a little.”
Tessa calmed down the horse and quickly went out to the entrance of the village. She could see the downtown in the distance, but like the village, everything there was covered in darkness without any lights.
Tessa thought it was strange and ran further to the place where the castle walls were.
