Chapter 90
The Capital’s Academy.
The last time she set foot here was over ten years ago. In other words, it was a place in their memories that was far beyond the time when the rivers and mountains changed. Chloe wondered why Eric had brought her here and what he intended to do here.
Her lips parted as she slowly scanned the academy building beyond the carriage.
“…Why are we here?”
Perhaps Eric knew that she would ask that question, he gave the answer he had prepared.
“I came because it was the place where you and I first met.”
Her eyes turned to him.
“So, why?”
Eric opened his mouth before closing it again.
What should he say? Should he say that he came all this way because he wanted to go back to the beginning with her, or that he came to this place of memories because he wanted their relationship back to the beginning…
No, no… It was useless to say this now.
Thinking that he couldn’t reach Chloe now, no matter what he said, Eric shook his head and took Chloe’s hand.
“Let’s get off first.”
Saying so, he opened the carriage door without waiting for her answer.
The sky was overcast, but the sun was shining through the clouds. Then, he opened the umbrella and allowed her to come inside. He tilted the umbrella over her and wrapped his arms around her shoulders.
Since it was a weekend, there were no people at the academy. Everyone who came and went looked like the academy’s janitor, so Eric and Chloe were able to get into the academy building without meeting people.
The academy was still there. In a good way, it had been well preserved so that they could still feel the past, and in a bad way, it was old without innovation.
Chloe, however, was quite eager for this same building. She could feel the fragrance she had experienced a long time ago when she was living in the midst of her dreams. Her depressed mood felt a little better.
She slowly turned her gaze to all the buildings in the academy and the wide expanse of grass, then fixed her eyes on the podium in the middle.
That was where she first met Eric.
He was giving a speech as a senior student, and Chloe was looking up at him from below. The weather was fine, and the wind was pleasant. She could hear the rustling leaves, the cloudless sky, the chirping of birds, and Eric’s low, deep voice through the loudspeaker that day.
She remembered the very moment she fell in love with him.
When his eyes turned towards her, and the moment she saw herself in Eric’s hollow eyes, she felt as if she had the whole world. There was no chattering of people, no chirping of birds, no rustle of rustling leaves, nothing.
Time seemed to have stopped. In the frozen time, just the two of them looking at each other… such a world once came to Chloe.
That day when everything was shining brightly.
Whooo.
The wind blew.
Chloe lost her thoughts, blown by the cold wind. She smiled coolly as she gazed at the empty podium, the dilapidated academy building, the scrawny tree branches and the cloudy weather.
Everything has changed, she thought so.
Then, she suddenly turned her head and looked down at her shoulder. The shoulder that Eric’s large hand touched looked somehow small and shabby before Chloe pulled her chin and clasped her hands.
“I don’t think you came here to see the academy.”
She uttered in a low voice.
“Why are you here?”
Eric decided that now was the time to reveal the real reason he had come here. In other words, to reveal what he had been thinking all along. He squeezed Chloe’s shoulder a little harder.
“I came because I wanted to remember the first time we met.”
She glanced up at him.
“You don’t remember?”
He remembered the first time he saw her. She was the one who stood out among the many people. As he looked at her, her eyes were so dazzling that he had to cover himself with his hands. As soon as he saw her, his heart thumped and dropped…
Eric continued, recalling that precious moment.
“It was the first time I looked down at you. It was the first and the last. Ever since I’ve looked up at you… it is the same now.”
The worlds revealed the desperate inferiority and qualifications that Eric had harbored in his heart, as well as the foolishness that he had been deifying her. Still, Chloe couldn’t figure out why he was saying this.
She shook her head.
“I don’t know what you want to say.”
“So.”
Eric lowered his hand from Chloe’s shoulder and took her hand.
“I mean, it was here.”
Then, he pointed to the podium.
“The place where I first saw you.”
“….”
“And, the place where I fell in love at first sight with you.”
Whooo.
The wind blew again.
Chloe felt the memories she had been trying to erase come back, awakening her senses. She stared down at her hand that was held by Eric, then said words.
“I’m sorry I asked if you were a commoner.”
Eric’s eyes widened.
As he gazed down at her with a slightly trembling gaze, Chloe continued.
“I had no bad intentions. You look so noble, you know what I’m talking about? It’s different from the common people I know, so I asked. Purely.”
The distinction between commoners and nobles was by no means pure. At times like this, Eric felt that she was a deep-rooted noble, and he found out that he was a commoner who couldn’t help it though he couldn’t reveal it again… to be hurt again by her words made him look so weak.
“You are always pure.”
He slipped his fingers into her hand.
“But think about it. If ‘the me then’ and ‘the me after that’ hadn’t been a stupid child clinging to an inferiority complex…”
Chloe looked up at Eric’s open lips.
“I wish I had realized that I loved you a little earlier.”
He spoke of love again with fine lips.
Now he was talking about love again. Chloe shook her head.
“Eric. I am…”
“Chloe.”
He pulled something out of his arms before she could say anything. What he took out was a small box, a very luxurious one made of velvet. As Eric deftly unlocked the latch and opened the box, inside was a necklace decorated with diamonds.
As soon as she saw it, Chloe was somewhat startled and lost her words.
Eric took the opportunity to pull out the necklace and put it around her neck, and whispered softly in her ear.
“I love you.”
Chloe’s breath stopped as she gazed up at Eric with trembling eyes.
Unconsciously, she touched the necklace. The touch of the cold jewelry was felt on her skin. It was an unexpected gift. She didn’t know that he would go ahead and prepare a present. It was an amazing change.
“I have loved you all along. From the moment I saw you until now.”
Eric also spoke in a trembling voice.
“Can’t we please go back to the beginning?”
He was desperate. This moment felt so terrible because he was desperate enough to be too desperate.
“I want to rebuild this false relationship. So, Chloe. please.”
“Eric.”
Chloe thought that the academy’s dilapidated building and Eric’s tired voice were somehow similar. Over time everything has changed.
She, too.
“A lot has changed. I have changed as well.”
She continued, slowly dropping her hand that was touching the necklace.
“I… now…”
Then, she smiled sadly.
“I want to stop.”
Was this how it felt like when the floor was collapsing? Did this feel like the end of the world? Eric took a deep breath, trying to straighten his floundering legs. However, she spoke again as she looked at him indifferently, with eyes devoid of any emotion.
“Please let me go.”
It felt like being pushed off a high cliff. Falling into the bottomless sea and being dragged endlessly… such a feeling. Still, he didn’t say anything, and the silence was driven by regret for everything he had done and feared that he would never be able to change Chloe’s heart.
It was horrible.
Eric thought it would be nice if everything collapsed… except for Chloe.
Except for her.
Eric had no idea how he got back to the mansion. Even in the midst of that, he was worried that her physical condition had deteriorated since she had been out for a long time, so he called a doctor and told Andrea to make more fires and heat her up.
Then, he returned to his room, and as soon as he got back, he uncorked the whiskey. He gulped down the whiskey without even thinking about pouring it into a glass.
Hoo.
He wiped the alcohol from his mouth with his hand and sat down on the sofa, stretching out both legs, putting them on the table and tilting his head back. The light from the electric lamp stings his eyes painfully though he couldn’t shake the feeling that his eyes were still dark.
Yes. His eyes were dark. He didn’t feel lost… he felt like the road itself was gone.
There was no road anywhere.
Where should he go?
Eric covered his face with his palms and sighed heavily.
“Please let me go.”
Her words ring in his ears. Eric didn’t want to hear the words anymore, so he plugged his ears, but once the words got stuck in his head, they didn’t go away easily.
Let go, let go…
He wondered if he really should let her go, whether he was holding her back with his own greed, whether he should say goodbye to her silently if it were for her happiness. Yes. That was right. For Chloe’s happiness, he had to let her go, then make a mechanical heart and transplant it to her, and leave.
But, but…
Eric wanted to be with Chloe.
…It shouldn’t be like this.
Eric murmured and lifted himself up before he hurriedly left the room.
