Chapter 114
Kiicck, kiick.
The wheelchair moved slightly in the wind blowing from somewhere. The creaking sound from the unoiled wheels was annoying enough to get on his nerves.
“Can’t you please get rid of that damn wheelchair?”
Eric couldn’t hold it in any longer and shouted.
“Why should I get rid of it? It’s proof that Your Excellency survived. I will keep it right by your side.”
As Daniel replied nonchalantly, Eric grimaced and tightened his grip on the nipper he was holding.
“It’s been over three months since I was able to use both my legs. I’m sick of looking at that wheelchair. So get rid of it.”
“I refuse.”
“Daniel.”
“Madam told me to keep it.”
“….”
Eric halted, wanting to shout. If it was an order directly issued by Chloe and no one else, he couldn’t argue against it.
“…Why did Chloe say that?”
“Didn’t I tell you? It’s proof that Your Excellency survived. Madam also thought that way and wanted to keep it.”
“Useless.”
Even though he retorted, the slight raise of his lips betrayed his good mood. The mere fact that Chloe was thinking of him made him elated.
After fixing her heart and coming back from the brink of death, he became convinced that true love was exactly this. The smile that kept surfacing whenever he thought of her, the clarity that came when he spoke her name, the warmth that filled his fingertips when he recalled her scent…
Everything contained love for Chloe. It made him even happier.
After glancing at the clock, he tightened the spinning screw even more. He had to fix this piece of scrap metal quickly to make it in time for his appointment with her.
“I really thought Your Excellency was going to die.”
However, Daniel seemed unwilling to end the conversation. He added.
“I’m serious. You’ve been asleep for months like dead with a pale face, so I thought you were actually dead…!”
“I won’t die.”
He responded indifferently as he looked at Daniel, who was fussing.
“How could I die and leave Chloe behind?”
Eric chuckled.
“I’ve never been this happy with Chloe, so I couldn’t die because it would be unfair. That’s why I came back alive.”
“Now that you’re happy, is it okay to die?”
“No.”
He raised an eyebrow slightly.
“I have to feel even happier.”
After putting down the nipper and taking off his gloves, he straightened his disheveled tie and glanced at the clock.
It was noon.
It was a good time to have lunch with Chloe.
“Take care of the rest until I come back.”
“I can’t have lunch?”
“Starve.”
Eric spoke firmly.
“That’s your punishment for saying weird stuff like you thought I was dead.”
Daniel groaned, but he ignored him as he left the lab. Eric’s footsteps down the neatly organized corridor were lighter and more cheerful than ever.
“Chloe!”
Eric called out to her with a joyful voice as he opened the door. She, standing by the window, came into view.
Chloe, with her lustrous silver hair elegantly tied up, her fair skin glistening, and her blue eyes sparkling. He smiled again, feeling the vitality on her face, the evidence of life that he had not felt in the past. The scythe of death no longer seemed to loom over them.
“Andrea said on the way that lunch preparations were all done. Shall we go down together?”
He approached her with a step.
However, he began to notice something different. Chloe seemed strange. She just stood there absentmindedly without giving any response. No, she wasn’t just standing there, she was staring down at something she held in her hand.
Sensing a momentary unease, he grabbed her shoulders.
“Chloe?”
“Ah, yes.”
Finally, she looked up at him, hiding the letter-like thing she had been holding behind her back. Her eyes were filled with anxiety. Eric could feel his breath quickening.
“What’s wrong?”
“No, nothing.”
She quickly shook her head.
As she tightly clenched the letter she was holding, anger and sadness, the emotions that she couldn’t hide were vividly apparent.
This made Eric look at Chloe with even more suspicion.
Biting her lower lip and glancing around, she eventually dropped her shoulder helplessly and extended the letter she had been hiding behind her back to him.
“A letter came… from Mother.”
“From the Duchess?”
Eric frowned as he took the letter from Chloe’s hand.
The letter was long. It accused her of not caring for her mother. Questioned whether she felt sorry for her mother and Joseph. Saying that if she was the kind of child to abandon her mother, she shouldn’t have been born in the first place and that her mother would not have loved her.
At the end of the letter, filled with venomous words, was a demand for her to come and apologize immediately.
The content was so stupid that he still couldn’t understand it.
Haa.
Eric sighed, rubbing his forehead.
“You can ignore this. Didn’t you expect the Duchess to react like this?”
“Yes. That’s right. But…”
She dropped her head.
It wasn’t the first or second time she had received such a letter; she was getting used to it. It was something she could ignore and pass over, as he suggested. However, Chloe felt uneasy about letting it go. She felt like she was missing something and walking away.
…No, she even felt like she was running away from the problem.
She shook her head.
“How long do I have to keep running like this?”
She gradually raised her eyes to meet Eric’s gaze.
“I have become a disobedient daughter who abandoned my mother for love. My mother has become an endlessly pitiful and miserable person.”
“Chloe.”
“It’s so unfair. That’s not true. I…I have never once received Mother’s love.”
She bit her lower lip again and took a deep breath.
Since Eric woke up, or more precisely, since she had received his blood and started living a complete life, she had thought that nothing would block her path ahead. Now, she had thought that only a happy path would open up in front of her, that there would be no more misfortunes or hardships.
However, that wasn’t the case… There was still old, unresolved bitterness from the past.
Chloe decided that she couldn’t leave this bitterness. How long was she going to keep running like this? She didn’t want to run away anymore… she wanted to be confident in everything.
“Chloe, the Duchess hadn’t acted like this for just a day or two. If you react to this, you won’t be able to endure it.”
His words were a reasonable alternative. He had wanted Chloe to live her life as she always had, ignoring the Duchess.
To him, the Duchess was no more than an annoying fly buzzing around.
Nonetheless, it seemed different for Chloe. She firmly pursed her lips and looked directly into his eyes.
“Though if I run away from this, I will be tormented by my mother for the rest of my life until she passes away! No, maybe until Brother dies!”
She shuddered at the thought, wrapping her arms tightly around herself. Her tightly closed eyes seemed to block the painful past, the days when she was constantly tormented by her family.
“I don’t want to live like that anymore. I don’t want to be blamed for the wrongdoings I didn’t do.”
Eric hesitated for a moment, carefully taking in each of Chloe’s words as they flowed from her lips.
He still didn’t know what kind of wounds she had suffered from her family. He could only guess. However, he couldn’t ignore the fact that there was much greater pain than he assumed. He pulled her chin and placed his hand on her shoulder.
“You’re stubborn.”
“Yes.”
Chloe nodded.
Eric decided that he needed to work out this issue in order to heal her wounds, or rather, to take her one step forward. He stretched out his arms and embraced her, holding her tightly against his chest, whispering softly in her ear.
“What do you want me to do for you?”
She flinched.
Eric… what could he do for her?
As she pondered deeply, she held onto Eric’s waist and took a deep breath.
“With me…”
Chloe lifted her head.
“Let’s go to Mother with me.”
Her deep determination was reflected in her blue eyes.
“I will go and talk to her myself.”
It was a decision to cut off all the shackles and bitterness of the past.
