Chapter 111
Chloe found Haras’s words somewhat amusing.
Eric had said that her transformation was good, or rather, that she needed to change. However, Haras, who claimed to be ‘family,’ was not of the same opinion. He seemed to want her to remain as the child she was in the past.
She found him ridiculous and tiresome.
It was absurd that she had relied on such people and considered them family. At that moment, Chloe found courage. Perhaps it was because she realized that the people who had seemed somewhat frightening were nothing special.
She clenched her fists and glared.
“If you think this change is a bad thing…”
She uttered with a sardonic smile.
“Then, you really weren’t my family at all.”
Disdain filled her face. Haras, William, and Elizabeth, who could not fail to notice it, flushed with shame.
Chloe looked at each of them as she continued.
“I came here today to give you a warning. Please don’t harass me any longer. If anything like this happens again…”
She stared at Haras.
“I might just expose the royal family’s private affairs to the world.”
Having spent a long time with the royal family, she knew their flaws better than anyone else. It was her only weapon, and she had just brought it out.
Haras’s face, understanding this fact, was colored with astonishment.
“Chloe! How could you say such a thing?!”
“How could Brother try to kill me?”
Seeing Haras hesitate for a moment at her sharp words, she decided that it was time to end this conversation. If she continued speaking, she might end up seeing things she didn’t want to see.
“Please be careful not to go as far as to do such a thing.”
With those final words, Chloe left the room.
It felt relieving.
So, this was the feeling.
Chloe smiled faintly, and that smile soon spread into laughter, making her happy.
Though Eric had entrusted everything to Chloe, he, too, was still within the confines of the royal palace. He could no longer turn a blind eye to the despicable acts of the royal b*stards. Having his limits on tolerating, he requested an audience with the King.
The one thing that Haras feared the most was the King, and Eric had the ability to manipulate the King.
As he entered the room, he saw the King lying on the sick bed.
He had once felt sorry for him, but not anymore. The current Eric believed that the King had raised monsters like Haras, and he had to take some responsibility for that.
So, Eric spoke briefly.
“I believe you have heard.”
As the King’s droopy eyes slowly opened, Eric looked into his hazy pupils and continued.
“About me ceasing my dealings with the royal family.”
The King’s fingers trembled.
“Marquis.”
The King spoke in a feeble, aging voice.
“Was it… necessary to do so?”
Eric gave a bitter smile.
He could sense the resentment in the King’s tone. Who was blaming whom? Who was the one who should be blamed, and now they were blaming him?
He exhaled a frustrated breath and looked down at the King.
“You can ask the princes for the reasons.”
“Marquis.”
“And there will be no further financial support.”
“….”
“The royal family will continue to live as the royal family, and I will live my own life.”
Eric spoke with a composed and calculated attitude before he bowed his head respectfully in front of the King.
“Thank you for all your efforts.”
For a long while, the King said nothing.
He lay there, his eyes still clouded, his face showing signs of illness, and he gazed at him intently. There was a sense of shame in the King’s expression alongside the illness.
The royal family boasted of its noble lineage. It must be quite shameful to have to make concessions to a commoner like him in such a place. Eric, well aware of this, smiled once more. The current situation was quite amusing for him.
“Marquis.”
The King’s lips parted.
“Please reconsider one more time. If my children have done wrong, I will make them apologize…”
“Some matters cannot be resolved with an apology.”
Eric cut off the King’s words.
It seemed that the King had the wrong idea, believing that if he put in more effort, he would listen obediently. However, Eric had things to protect now, and it was clear what he needed to do to ensure that.
“Your Majesty.”
He opened his mouth again.
“Now, I wish to create a new world.”
“Marquis. Please…”
“I ask that you watch over that path.”
Despite the fact that the King reached out to grab him once more, Eric shrugged him off. In the end, the King lay back on the sickbed, forced to breathe slowly once again.
A scarecrow king who couldn’t even raise his voice.
Eric looked back at the King indifferently, lost in thought.
Rumors spread that the King’s illness had worsened.
The number of people speculating that he might soon pass away was increasing. One newspaper published an article on its front page, stating that the King’s death was imminent and that it was uncertain who would succeed the throne, expressing concerns about the future of the kingdom.
However, such gossip would likely disappear by tomorrow.
Today, Eric made a declaration.
He declared independence. Marquisate would no longer be subject to royal interference and declared his support for liberalism.
This was welcome news for the revolutionaries who had been advocating for liberalism and a surprising story for those who were still struggling to accept change.
On the other hand, there were discussions if Eric Aslan would be a fitting figure for liberalism, mocking his previous life as a capitalist who had exploited workers. Regardless, he paid no attention to it, instead hiring the factory workers as regular employees as if to mock those who mocked him.
The workers, who suddenly received higher wages and stable jobs, were initially taken aback but soon raised toasts and cheered.
Eric, looking at them, mocked them as vultures who would one day become his firm support. Regardless, he had made a significant decision as a capitalist and planned to use it to move forward.
Today was also the day of Chloe’s surgery.
“Darling.”
Wearing a surgical gown with buttons at the front, Chloe spoke with a trembling voice.
“Are you okay?”
Despite the life-and-death nature of today’s surgery, she first worried about his well-being. It seemed she was aware of his declaration today.
Eric, with a somewhat tired face—having not slept well—approached her.
“Why are you worrying about me even in moments like this?”
He spoke with a somewhat resigned laugh.
“The most important thing to worry about right now is yourself.”
As Chloe smiled weakly and bit her lip, he took a step closer to her and gently stroked her cheek.
“Aren’t you scared?”
“I am.”
She replied.
“I’m afraid I’ll fail and never be able to open my eyes again. The thought of never seeing you again is terrifying.”
She blurted out without even taking a breath. That was how scary and fearful it was for her. She realized that this feeling of terror stemmed from the fact that she had a strong desire to live, something she had been ignoring.
She let out a laugh similar to Eric’s.
“For the first time, I knew I was someone who longed for life this much. I actually thought I didn’t want to live much…”
Eric grabbed Chloe’s hand as she lowered her head.
“It’s natural for anyone to have the same thoughts when they come close to death.”
There was warmth.
They couldn’t tell whose it was, but the mingled warmth brought tranquility to Chloe and courage to Eric. Their body temperatures gave hope to each other.
“Chloe.”
Eric continued with a firmer voice.
“You will definitely live.”
“….”
“I will save you.”
Chloe nodded. She will live….
She understood how much hope was conveyed in those words, probably more than he realized, she thought to herself in a melancholic manner.
“The doctor will be here soon. I know they’re preparing in the room right now.”
“Yes.”
“So just lie down and close your eyes.”
Eric guided her towards the bed.
“When you wake up from anesthesia, everything will be different.”
“I will live, right?”
He responded as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
“Yes. Definitely.”
“…I believe you.”
Chloe obediently lay on the bed, and he covered her with the blanket up to her chest, kissing her forehead.
“Chloe.”
He wiped her cheek with a slightly trembling hand.
“Whatever happens…”
In his gray eyes, she was reflected. His gaze was much more profound than at other times, as if he couldn’t afford to lose her at this moment.
“I hope you live.”
Chloe couldn’t quite grasp the meaning behind Eric’s words, though she couldn’t say otherwise here. So, all she could do was answer obediently.
“Yes. I will do that.”
She didn’t know how heavy the weight of those words was. Still, she believed that everything would work out, and she slowly closed her eyes.
And when she opened them, much had changed.
