Chapter 7
Lix searched her memory.
What was certain was that this blue dragon remained until the end to look after her. Also, Sican persistently demanded that she call his name and allow him to touch her. He could just do that like his other siblings.
She didn’t even know how many times she relaxed with the healing power unique to the blue dragon when she was tired. By the time she pleaded with exhaustion, calling Sican by name, he had let her go.
“You finally woke up.”
Sican smiled as Lix opened her eyes, clearly pleased with her surroundings.
After an awkward moment of eye contact with him, she turned her head to take in the room. Compared to the one she used in the imperial palace, this room was much larger and adorned with luxurious decorations. A small fountain even added a touch of elegance to one side of the space.
Her curiosity led her to glance around even more.
The room was surprisingly spacious, and it felt like a natural environment. Even if there were living trees or grass growing throughout the room, it didn’t seem out of place at all. The bed, made from an unknown material, appeared to be fluffy and inviting.
It was a room carefully designed to provide comfort for human beings to stay.
There was nothing to say to each other. Lix looked up at the green leaves hanging from the ceiling, resembling chandeliers, and finally spoke.
“Hey… Sican.”
Yes, Lix?”
Sican immediately responded.
“How long have I been asleep?”
Although her voice wasn’t that hoarse, she had the feeling she hadn’t spoken for quite some time. She asked, thinking that since she passed out after dawn, she must not have been awake for at least half a day.
Judging by his reaction, she may have been asleep much longer than that.
“One month.”
Her prediction was right.
Lix wasn’t as surprised as she thought. However, it was a bit strange that she slept for a month and then woke up with a fine body. The human body alone could not endure that long.
She then looked at Sican, who kept smiling at her, and asked.
“Have you been looking after me all this time?”
“Yes.”
Did he look after her because he knew that she would wake up right away? Unlike last night, he had a quiet and relaxed atmosphere.
After bowing her head to thank him, she took a good look at Sican’s face as eyes filled with the clear sky that met her gaze calmly. His eyes were quite sharp and fierce compared to his neat hair. Still, the smile he was wearing was hiding that impression.
The blue dragon seemed to be in a good mood as he took Lix’s hand and fiddled with it.
While the dragon mentioned he had been looking after her, somehow she wasn’t sure, so she asked him back.
“Am I not going to die?”
“Just because you received the dragon’s energy does not mean you’ll live forever.”
It was not like that. Lix shook her head.
“Are you not killing me?”
“Who will?”
Taking her hand and holding it to his face, Sican rubbed his cheeks and sometimes pressed his lips to it. Even so, it seemed like he was replying half-heartedly, as his blue eyes seemed to be looking at her.
Feeling ashamed of his lips touching her hand, again and again, Lix slipped her hand away from him.
“I heard that if I am offered as a sacrifice, it will die.”
“There’s no way.”
Sican continued to speak, pulling her hand back with confused eyes.
“There’s no way the human imperial family was wrong about the sacrifice.”
The next words surprised her this time.
“…Have you heard any details?”
Sican glanced at the complexion of the young royal family.
For a human with a mark, she looked pretty intimidated.
From the moment she sat there, covered in blood, he sensed that something was amiss. No matter how many years had passed since the last sacrifice was offered to the dragon, the characteristics of a marked human could not have changed.
Sican tilted his head and offered a rough explanation.
The mark of the dragon was a form of magic that only appeared in a select few humans destined for greatness.
Some dragons, intrigued by humans, took sacrifices for their own amusement and bore heirs. However, Lix’s mark was one that still held magical power. Regular individuals without a mark who forcefully absorb the dragon’s energy will perish.
Lix partially grasped the concept and nodded.
To call her an outstanding human was preposterous.
Unlike Crown Prince Nyx, who possessed an exceptional physique, she was considered flawed, bearing only the mark. If that was the case, it seemed fitting that she was abandoned as a substitute.
Having absorbed the dragon’s energy, the powers of the five gods now merged and shimmered within her, becoming one with her body.
After receiving a brief explanation from Sican, she felt relieved that she wouldn’t have to face death.
Nonetheless, even after the matter of the dragons bearing successors was resolved, she had no place to return to. She felt like a lifeless existence. Despite having the option of returning to the imperial castle, she hesitated, as it was a place she never wanted to go back to.
There was another concern weighing on her mind.
She glanced at Sican, contemplating whether to ask him, but decided against it. Getting upset wouldn’t help. The golden dragon, Kardam, had assured her that she could live comfortably until she fulfilled her goal, so there was no need to delve into matters prematurely.
Whether or not he understood her feelings, Sican moved closer to her and called out to her.
“Lix, I…”
Sican smiled as he brushed Lix’s hair.
When he opened his mouth to say something to her as she stared at him blankly without answering before a voice could be heard, the door burst open, and someone came in with a staggering gait that did not match his tall stature.
It was the wind dragon Viridine.
“Kan! Oh, human, are you awake?”
Lix replied with silence.
Viridine came over to the bed at once and squeezed her shoulder. The staring eyes were awkward, so when she looked away, he grabbed her chin.
The light green hair of the wind dragon, which was much lighter than when she saw it at night, shimmered even more with the sunlight. The wind that blew as soon as he entered had the scent of spring even though it was still winter.
“Umm, that’s strange. Still…? When did you wake up?”
Saying words with unknown meanings, the wind dragon held her by the chin and twisted her from one angle to another. The blue-green eyes, slightly softened by the sunlight, seemed to be getting closer. Lix closed her eyes tightly though Sican’s voice stopped him.
“Viridine, what’s going on?”
“Ah, that’s right. That’s right.”
Lix, who was barely placed back, touched her chin or shoulder, which Viridine had been holding on to.
To her, the night a month ago felt just like last night. She didn’t feel the heat in the air like that time, but she was afraid because she remembered that time. Most of all, because of those sharp pupils, it made her realize that the other person was not human.
“Come out. Hurry up. Let’s go to the border.”
She thought he only told Sican, but Viridine also gestured at Lix.
Perhaps that meant she had to get up.
Lix hurriedly got down. Even if she seemed fine right away, after lying down for a month, she tripped and stumbled.
Thankfully, Sican caught her when she almost fell.
Even though she was startled for a moment by someone touching her body, she quickly realized that this was not a threat and relaxed her awkward expression. Lix turned her head away, pretending not to notice Sican, whose expression hardened slightly.
The Dragon’s Territory, situated in the northernmost part of the continent, was a renowned and mysterious place.
It remained untouched by human presence, retaining its primal beauty. Many people yearned to witness its captivating and eerie allure at least once in their lifetime, even though they couldn’t venture far into it and could only observe it from a distance.
This region, known as the end of the world, was plagued by an extraordinary climate.
Historical records depicted bizarre occurrences, such as relentless ice falling from the sky, scorching heat waves consuming unseen places, and a devastating whirlwind capable of annihilating all living things.
People, driven by both fear and fascination, observed and documented these phenomena, feeling an addictive sense of helplessness. Remarkably, these peculiar events seemed confined within the territory, sparing the rest of the world from their effects.
Lix had always heard that it was a place where humans should never set foot, a belief reinforced by the alarming rumors. Nonetheless, her experience there was quite the opposite. The skies were clear and blue, the forests wild and majestic.
Upon landing on a hill with a breathtaking view, her first impression was that of its sheer beauty.
