Chapter 116 – Without Qualification
Early in the morning, the soft sunlight woke Hadius from his slumber.
An unfamiliar ceiling, an unfamiliar bed, an unfamiliar room, and…
His hazy eyes, like those of a startled cat, suddenly widened as he noticed the woman sitting beside him.
Why are you here?
His forehead wrinkled. In the fog of his mind, scenes from the previous night began to emerge one by one.
His clear and vivid memories ended with hearing stories about Nathan Malvin. After that, he could not remember how he had boarded the carriage or why he was lying in this bed.
He had arrived in a rather drunken state.
Hadius’ lips curled into a crooked smile. Even though he had behaved like a drunk, he didn’t regret it. The fact that he had woken up to see that small, doll-like face was reason enough for him to forgive his own momentary loss of reason.
He stared at her sleeping face for a while, then reached out to touch her golden hair. His fingers brushed it lightly, causing her long eyelashes to flutter and her eyelids to slowly open.
Their eyes met.
“Did you sleep well?”
A blush flushed her pale, delicate cheeks. Emilia’s shyness warmed his heart and put him in a good mood.
He lifted his upper body and leaned in without hesitation, his lips slightly rough and forceful, but she responded willingly, causing her body to heat up uncontrollably.
“Is anyone outside?”
“No…no one.”
A lovely tremor, like a bird’s song, rose up her spine, heightening her anticipation.
“Where did everyone go?”
“They went to Hedel.”
“When will they be back?”
“Probably later this afternoon…”
Before she could finish her sentence, he lowered his face again. This time the kiss was much longer and deeper.
“Tell me, what mistake did I make last night?”
The corner of Emilia’s mouth curled into a slow smile.
“Don’t you remember?”
“Must I beg your forgiveness?”
But instead of answering, she found herself unable to do anything but take a sharp breath. Hadius had taken her wrist and tied it above her head.
Her loose sleeves slid up to reveal a slender, pale elbow. He pressed his excited body gently against hers and whispered in her ear.
“”Tell me quickly. What have I done wrong?”
“Nothing at all…”
Emilia, overwhelmed and forgetting her intentions to tease him, barely managed to answer.
“Is that so?”
His questioning look was filled with desire.
“There’s no way…”
Hadius kissed her again. He nibbled playfully, then plunged his tongue deep, undoing the tight straps of her dress.
His hand slipped between the loosened fabric, gently caressing her heated body. Emilia closed her eyes, breathing heavily.
His skilled hand pushed up her skirt and removed her underwear. The man who entered between her thighs explored her snow-white skin thoroughly.
Her body remembered his touch only too well.
He explored her with his tongue, showing her how persistent and skilled he could be. His head dipped low, and his tongue made contact without warning.
Starting gently, as if savoring a sweet treat, his penetration gradually intensified. He probed deeper and deeper, causing sensations she couldn’t have imagined.
Like a ravenous beast, he devoured her hungrily, and then, unexpectedly, he unbuttoned his own pants and began to move his hand back and forth.
A man pleasuring himself orally, swallowing her while satisfying his own desires, drove Emilia to the peak of her excitement.
“Stop…”
Emilia writhed, twisting her body in protest.
Hadius froze for a moment, his head tilted back. With the soft moans of her pleasure and the waves of sensation washing over her, he couldn’t help but harden.
He buried his face in her pale neck and drew in deep breaths. Their ragged breaths, intertwined and frantic, shattered the silence.
Afterward, Hadius retrieved a cloth to clean up the messy marks. As he wiped, he used his tongue to clean only one spot on her, not the cloth.
Unable to face a man like him, Emilia buried her face in the blanket.
“I’ve never felt the need to wash so thoroughly before.”
Contrary to his words, he lay back on the bed.
Emilia’s protests seemed to fall on deaf ears. Hadius, holding her gently like a doll, closed his eyes and drifted off.
When Hadius finally came to, the sun was high in the sky. The warm rays and the scent in the air awakened his senses.
Outside, Emilia was busy around the oven.
Sensing his presence, she turned. Her blue eyes roamed playfully from head to toe, and she broke into a mischievous smile.
“Really, it’s a mess, you know?”
“It’s a mess.
He leaned against a wooden pillar and crossed his arms. His languid gaze sent shivers down Emilia’s spine.
“Go over there.”
Emilia pointed somewhere after setting down a ladle.
“Hot water for you to bathe as you wish, my lord,” Emilia added, deliberately emphasizing “my lord” as if to tease Hadius.
He couldn’t help but blush at the playful tone.
“That’s right. Mr. Grozhang requested it. Take good care of our lord. He sleeps like a baby as soon as he gets into bed.”
“Of course,” Emilia replied, clearly enjoying her playful banter with Hadius.
Hadius returned to his chambers, leaving Emilia behind. He bathed in the small tub, his thoughts consumed by his actions of the previous night. How would he repay what he had received? When, how, and in what manner?
As the memories of the early morning activities resurfaced, his blood began to boil.
“Mr. Grozhang didn’t bring any spare clothes with him? There must have been some in the carriage,” he inquired after leaving the bath, wrapping a single towel around his body.
Emilia blushed and looked away. “Here you go.”
A short time later, Hadius emerged, dressed in a clean shirt and pants. He asked about the missing clothes as he stood before Emilia, who looked flustered.
“Please eat. I’m so hungry I feel like I could die,” she said, her face still flushed.
They sat facing each other and shared a morning meal of bread, mashed potatoes, salted fish, and boiled vegetables. Emilia ate heartily.
Watching her, Hadius noticed something strange.
“Morning sickness?” Hadius asked.
“It’s gone. It went away so suddenly that I was worried, but my stepmother assured me that it can vary from person to person,” Emilia replied. “By the way…”
She cleared her throat before continuing, “Our family is taking all of this surprisingly well. Taking Mr. Grozhang to Hedel early in the morning was probably their way of giving us some time alone. What can they do now? A child is on the way.”
“True, it can be annoying, but in many ways it’s quite useful,” Hadius said with a glint of humor in his eyes as he looked at Emilia’s lower abdomen.
When will she get used to that look?
Emilia felt her heart flutter constantly.
After they finished their meal, Hadius’ gaze stopped at a small wooden chair and a table piled high with fabric, needles and thread. His indifferent hand picked up one of the items, and when he realized it was clothing for an unborn child, a strange fire ignited in his chest.
“So tiny?” he remarked.
“Yes. I can’t believe it myself. I’ve asked my mother several times just to be sure,” Emilia replied.
The sight of the man holding a piece of clothing barely the size of two palms brought a smile to Emilia’s face.
“What is this?” Hadius asked, holding up a long rectangular piece of cloth.
“It’s a diaper.”
“So many of them?” Hadius asked.
“My mother said even this might not be enough. She wants to make as many as she can before she starts work in Lha Trang,” Emilia replied.
The conversation about the child had a similar effect on Hadius. The incredible presence had begun to become a reality, etched in his mind and heart.
“When did they say it was due?”
“Sometime next July or August, I think.”
Hadius lost himself in thought.
To avoid making the 13th Mayer a bastard, he had to resolve all issues before then. He couldn’t take any unplanned actions or break any promises. He knew that he had not kept his word to Emilia about becoming a marquis and returning to her.
“When will you move to Hedel?”
“Because of my mother and the school in Lha Trang, I think they will stay there for a while. Charlotte and I will stay here for a few more days.”
“Why?”
“Charlotte seems reluctant to leave this place.”
Hadius nodded reluctantly as he explored the small house.
“I want to stay here with Charlotte for a few more days and then go to Hedel. I want to see Ingrid again. I wonder how much effort Mr. Mitch has put into decorating the new house. It’s Mr. Mitch, by the way.”
As Emilia tidied the diapers and clothes he had scattered, she continued, “I think we need to go to the hospital.”
His face showed a hint of confusion. “Why?”
“I twisted my ankle getting off the carriage a while back, and my leg hurts sometimes. My mother says I should see a doctor. There’s a famous doctor in Reinsburgh who specializes in such things, young master.”
Emilia put down her scissors and gazed dreamily into the empty air, lost in thought. Her relaxed humming had a hypnotic effect on Hadius, unlike herself.
“Why are you doing this?”
He looked at Emilia, confused.
A few days ago, he had received a final warning from the mercenary captain Maesen. He said that it would be impossible to hide in Hedel, where there were no hiding places.
“The situation is different from the hut; the forest provided cover and many places to hide. But in Hedel, there is nowhere to hide.”
“Fortunately, there are separate outbuildings and stables in Hedel. We should be able to ensure everyone’s safety by staying there and watching the grounds. Please arrange for the farm’s weapons and equipment to be moved to Hilden as soon as possible. For now, we’ll divide our operations between the farm, the new house, and the restaurant. Fortunately, the owner of the restaurant is willing to cooperate. You just have to make the decision, sir.”
Maesen’s voice echoed in his head.
It was too late to wish that Emilia didn’t know how dangerous things were.
“As I said, I’ve hired security for the farm.”
“Yes.”
“They will have to live with us in Hedel, just as they did in Lha Trang.”
Emilia showed no open signs of discomfort. She just nodded her head, as if she had already expected this.
“I’ve said it before, but I’m having a fight with my mother. If that woman finds out about the child…”
“I know. Don’t worry, we’ll be careful.”
Emilia smiled broadly, but Hadius couldn’t even muster a faint smile.
“No, you don’t understand. You probably can’t even guess,” Hadius said.
“Your life was always in danger. I knew that, and yet I took you and even gave you a child. I was foolish.”
As he pondered the truth he had tried to avoid, Hadius felt his chest tighten, and he realized something.
He realized why he had been so emotionally unstable these past few days, why just hearing the name Nathan Malvin made his heart feel like it was going to burst, and why he had been acting like a child throwing tantrums.
It was because he had no right.
He had no right to hold love or anything like it in his heart at this moment, no right to have any emotional capacity for it.
“One more thing,” he said, his emotions in turmoil as he looked at Emilia. “My engagement to Bianca Reinen is on Sunday.”
The house fell silent.
“It’s just a formality. It will end without any progress toward marriage. Promise me.”
Emilia turned her head quickly, afraid that the fiery emotions she felt would show if she continued to look at him.
For how many days had she felt her heart was in turmoil, like a child throwing tantrums, all because of the name Nathan Malvin?
It was jealousy.
Jealousy of another woman who would stand shoulder to shoulder with him in the same world, in an equal relationship.
Emilia didn’t want to make Hadius uncomfortable with such intense emotions.
“I’m really fine,” she lied. She tried hard to smile, forcing her mouth to curl upward.
William Richards untangled his crossed legs. He soon crossed them again. He had wasted his time on such a trivial matter!
He felt impatient and couldn’t stand it.
The solution to the small mystery that had arisen in the forest was simple.
He could meet the woman in question to confirm the facts, and if necessary, send a hitman to eliminate her if she couldn’t be convinced otherwise.
However, Hannes and Caitlyn were not cooperating at all.
A few hours ago, he had gone to Tobias, to the Reinen mansion, to discuss the matter. But he hadn’t been able to meet Hannes or Bianca; he had to turn his carriage around at the entrance.
Tobias was busy preparing for the engagement ceremony.
The sight of the servants tending the garden and decorating made him feel that it would be unwise to pour cold water on their excited mood.
The three would be engaged in four days. After that, there would be a meeting to set up a joint business, and if all went well, they would be married within a year.
Even though he had heard just one word from a messenger, he couldn’t afford to ruin everything without solid evidence.
In case his presence would ruin the party, Caitlyn had claimed to be unwell a few hours ago and asked to postpone the meeting until the day of the engagement.
Well, there was no need to rush.
In four days, the three of them would meet, whether they wanted to or not. They could discuss this face to face, and it wouldn’t be too late. Still, William couldn’t shake the strange feeling of fear and anger.
Wasn’t this the plan for the investigation?
However, he didn’t want to go to the girl’s house personally, considering the peasants to be his own problem.
This complicated situation…
With a sigh, William unfolded the newspaper.
Suddenly, his hand, which had been fumbling aimlessly, shook for a moment as he crumpled the paper.
‘Massive forest fires in South Mueller, Trunia declares state of emergency.’
As soon as he read the headline, a brilliant idea flashed through William’s mind.
He immediately recalled his messenger.
“How many of your men can ride a horse and shoot an arrow?”
“Three, sir.”
An evil smile crossed William’s face.
“I want to use all of them. Prepare them thoroughly.”
