Chapter 41 – Part 1
The noise died down in an instant. Some faces paled, hands and forks midair, and someone looked as if they had misheard it. Count Dirham, who had had a relaxed smile, also looked shocked.
“What?”
Even colder than that was my father’s expression. I was startled. A violent atmosphere suddenly enveloped the surroundings. But Dad wasn’t as scary as the first time I met him.
I swallowed my saliva and opened my mouth again. “What is an illegitimate child? Is that… good?”
Realizing that they didn’t mishear anything, the vassals looked like they were about to collapse. Count Rochelle’s expression in particular was impressive enough to immortalize in a painting and hang it on the wall.
“Who said that?”
“… Is it a bad word?”
“I asked who said that to you.”
“Dad, I’m scared of your face right now…” I tugged at my Dad’s hem and looked as if I was about to cry.
He softened his expression and sighed, then swept his slightly disheveled hair to the back. “I am not angry. It’s alright, you can tell me everything.”
I pointed my finger at Luca as the atmosphere calmed down a little bit.
“That sister told me – that I am an illegitimate child and of low birth.”
Viscount Rochelle jumped up as if he was struck by lightning. “That’s s-slander!”
“Viscount Rochelle,” Dad’s gloomy voice was directed towards him, “As a loyal servant of the Descartes bloodline, how can you say something that shouldn’t be spoken of with your own mouth?”
Half of the vassals seemed to agree with Viscount Rochelle’s words.
“Such harsh things couldn’t have been said to the Princess…”
“That’s right. I am surprised as well. There must be some misunderstanding.”
They even talked quietly among themselves. Maybe they didn’t believe me because I was a child.
But I wouldn’t sit back and watch the situation.
‘I will protect my family!’
“No… She said that it would be talked about in today’s meeting. Luca-unnie said she would be Princess Descartes and her younger brother would be the heir.”
“Please do not lie! Why is the Princess making up such a ridiculous lie?!” Viscount Rochelle yelled at me.
I covered my ears with my hands.
‘Uh, you should lower your voice a little.’
When Viscount Rochelle stopped yelling, I jumped out of my seat. “I’m not lying.”
“Princess!”
“I was playing with Kuhn earlier; she then told me that it was only a stray cat and asked me if she could touch him but I said no…”
“…”
“When I said no, she told me that I couldn’t possibly be a proper Descartes because mom was from a nameless family!”
“No, my God.”
“She (Luca) really said that to her (Mariette)?”
“She told me that is why I have to leave this place when I grow up.”
“…”
“She said that from today on, she will be officially listed as an official member of the family and live here. Isn’t that right, Luca-unnie?”
(T/N: I kept -unnie at the end so it is more annoying to hear hehehe [evil bunny])
Luca looked alternately between her father and me with tearful eyes. Viscount Rochelle turned his head and looked at his daughter, strongly grabbed her and pulled her arm.
“Come on, tell me yourself. You never said that, right? This father believes in you.”
“I, I mean, I… I’m just trying to be f-friends.” Tears began to pour from Luca’s trembling eyes as she held her dress as if it was her lifeline.
“Sister….” Her brother hid behind her back and cried. Luca wasn’t as clever as I thought.
If she was lying, then he (Viscount Rochelle) would use another method. Viscount Rochelle smiled awkwardly and spread his hands as if to show off his children who began to cry.
“I think Lady Mariette misunderstood what my child was saying to make friends. Kids can do that! Aren’t they only children? Haha!”
“Princess Descartes,” Dad quietly corrected Viscount Rochelle’s words.
“… Yes?”
“I don’t think you’re listening to my words, Uncle.”
Maybe it was because his use of honorifics was much more brutal today, but I wasn’t the only one who felt that way. Viscount Rochelle smiled, wiping away his sweat.
“Ah, oh! Yes, Princess! That’s right. So, the Princess is…”
“I didn’t lie. Luca-unnie told me that she was free to use the Descartes’ town house in the capital, and that Luca-unnie’s mother was of noble descent because her grandmother’s grandmother was the lady-in-waiting of Her Imperial Majesty.”
