Chapter 121 – Confession
As Declan and Erica’s carriage departed for Hessarion Palace, Mason walked over to Stella, who was staring at the back of the carriage.
“They’ll have a good time. Don’t worry too much.”
“I’m sure the newly chosen ladies-in-waiting aren’t used to it yet.”
Prior to the wedding, the imperial palace had brought in new ladies-in-waiting. Declan’s stringent nature pushed Noah, who was typically kind and patient, to his breaking point.
“I don’t think there could be a better opportunity than this to adapt to each other.”
“I suppose so. If I am there, Her Majesty will have fewer opportunities to get to know the other ladies-in-waiting.”
It was only then that Stella was a little relieved.
“How are you planning to spend the week?”
“Hmm, I’m curious about the outside of the imperial palace, but I don’t know the geography well, so I’m not brave enough.”
“Then, would it be all right if I guided you?
“The Chancellor…?”
The round eyes were cute, and Mason’s mouth relaxed.
“If you’ll allow me.”
“Thank you, but since His Majesty is away, you must be very busy…”
Seeing her worried eyes, Mason’s heart seemed to fill with pride.
“It’s okay. Shouldn’t I get some rest while His Majesty is gone?”
Since the Emperor was away, the Chancellor himself had to work several times more than usual, but that wasn’t important right now.
‘I’ll have to ask my father. If it’s His Majesty’s order, he won’t be able to refuse.’
Mason’s face lit up with a smile as he reminisced about his father, who served as the treasurer. On the contrary, Stella tilted her head, questioning the chancellor’s decision to take a break while the Emperor was absent.
However, observing Mason’s composed demeanor, she began to wonder if he had perhaps deceived her.
“Then, I’ll take you up on the offer.”
Stella opened her closet and took out three or four casual clothes, and put them on the bed, lost in thoughts.
‘…What should I wear?’
She was just going out to town, so why was she so excited?
Her heart raced with a different intensity compared to when she had visited the temple with the Savior. The reason she expressed her curiosity about places beyond the Imperial Palace to the Chancellor was because she held hopeful expectations in her heart.
“Be sure to tell the chancellor when you go out.”
It reminded her of the Savior, who had mentioned it while stealing glances at Mason. Even though she had spoken with great courage, her heart anxiously throbbed at the anticipation of Mason’s reaction.
When the long-awaited response finally arrived after what felt like an eternity, it was as if her heart would burst with joy and excitement. She held her breath, fearful that he might hear the pounding rhythm of her heart.
Recalling that moment, Stella’s face flushed crimson.
She then pressed her hands against her cheeks, trying to cool down, and stood in front of the mirror, clutching a mauve dress. Her body had gracefully filled out, and her rosy cheeks appeared unfamiliar to her. Especially her sparkling eyes invoked a sense of longing as if they were awakened from a dormant state.
“I am happy.”
As Stella gazed at her reflection in the mirror, her heart stirred with a familiar feeling reminiscent of her mother in the desert many years ago.
A gentle curve formed at the corners of Stella’s lips as she delicately touched her own image. There were moments when she grappled with her feelings concerning the Chancellor. Was he the one she could dare to hope for? Or was it nothing more than selfish desire?
However, the words of the Savior washed away her worries like a cleansing stream of water.
“Stella is Rohim’s chosen one, and she is a precious person I cherish.”
So be proud.
Upon hearing those words, Stella could barely contain the tears welling up within her. She gazed at herself in the mirror, her smile growing wider.
‘I’ll be much happier.’
With that promise to herself, she repeated those words and proceeded to dress in other garments. Finally, donning the ivory-colored dress and completing her makeup, Stella descended to the first floor with light and graceful steps.
Standing in the lobby on the first floor, Mason, dressed in an ultramarine blue suit, with his hair brushed straighter than usual.
“Chancellor.”
Hearing her clear voice, Mason turned to her.
The two faced each other, staring at each other and not speaking for a while.
Although he was usually well-groomed, today, Mason shimmered as if a group of lights had landed on him. His clothes weren’t particularly flashy, and only his bangs were brushed over.
“Am I late?”
It was Stella who broke the silence first.
“No. I just arrived a little early.”
Mason, who came to his senses belatedly, responded promptly and handed her a bouquet of lilies.
“Ah.”
Surprised by the unexpected gift, Stella opened her mouth slightly.
“When I think of you, this is the first thing that comes to mind.”
“Thank you.”
As Stella accepted the bouquet with a shy smile, the rich scent of lilies penetrated her nose.
“This is the first time I received flowers as a gift.”
“Is that so? You did a good job picking the flowers.”
A satisfied smile bloomed on his face.
‘You know what?”
As she tilted her head, Mason whispered something very important.
“The crest of our family is the lily.”
He then held out his arm to the bewildered Stella.
“Then, shall we go?”
Mason led Stella into the carriage, her hand resting on his arm. Stella, who got off the carriage at the entrance of the city, looked around and exclaimed in admiration.
“The empire is different in size.”
It was more splendid than Ielro’s royal capital, and there were so many people.
“Is this your first time outside the imperial palace?”
“Yes. This is the first time I have visited the Empire.”
“Is there any place you would like to visit?”
“I don’t know of any place… Can the chancellor recommend it?”
“Then, please leave it to me today. I will guide you properly.”
When Stella laughed, saying that she was looking forward to it, Mason put on a confident expression. The first place he took her was the clock tower built in the center of the city.
“If you go up here, you can see the city at a glance.”
“Can you go upstairs?”
“Yes, it is possible. Would you like to go up?”
She nodded, wanting to see what the imperial capital looked like, and Mason ushered her through the doorway. Stella, who tilted her head at the guards at the entrance, was even more puzzled as she climbed to the top.
“There is no one here.”
“Oh, originally, the entry and exit times were set for safety.”
“So, what about now?”
“We came up by the chancellor’s authority.”
Wondering if this was okay, Mason quickly added more words when Stella’s face showed a troubled expression.
“I really wanted to show you this scenery.”
He gently grabbed Stella by the shoulder and turned her away.
With an open view, the scenery of the imperial capital came into view at a glance.
“Wow.”
Stella exclaimed in admiration as she faced the sight unfolding beneath the clock tower.
“It’s like watching a toy town.”
Mason smiled graciously as he saw her eyes twinkle like a child’s.
“Uh, there’s a boat over there. Can I ride that?”
Mason, who had been staring at Stella, slowly turned his head to look at where her slender finger was pointing.
“Do you want to ride it?”
Stella gave a big nod.
While Stella had been aware of the river running through the imperial capital, she had never been informed that she would have the opportunity to ride a boat on it. Unable to catch a glimpse of the river from the royal capital, her curiosity grew even stronger.
“You can go if you want.”
Mason, as if waiting for her words, went down the clock tower with her to the riverside.
“It’s my first time riding a boat.”
“It’s an honor to have that first time with me.”
As Mason, who had already boarded the ship, extended his hand to guide her, Stella responded with a gentle smile. With a slight rocking motion of the boat, Stella hesitantly placed her feet on board. The sensation alone startled her, causing her to swiftly grasp onto Mason’s hand.
“Sit down here slowly. Then it will be fine.”
Stella obediently took her place on the comfortable cushioned seat as instructed, gripping the edge of the boat for reassurance.
Meanwhile, a tinge of regret flashed across Mason’s expression as he rubbed his hand where he had felt her warmth. He composed himself and positioned himself on the opposite side, gradually initiating a gentle rowing motion.
“From here, you can see the central area of the city at a glance.”
Slowly looking around, there were restaurants and shops on both sides of the river.
“There are so many different shops that it would take several days to see them all.”
“We can go one place at a time. It doesn’t have to be just today.”
Stella’s heart fluttered with anticipation when the words meant that they could come out together in the future.
“I want to go on a trip someday.”
She wanted to travel freely and experience new things. In the meantime, whether it was the desert or the royal palace, it was all about restrictions.
“If there is a place you would like to visit, please let me know. I will guide you.”
“Even if it’s far away?”
“Wherever. Wherever you want, I want to go with you.”
He took his hand off the oar and approached Stella. The distance between the two of them was so close that their knees brushed against each other.
“I want to eat the food you like and see the things you want to see together.”
He gently took Stella’s left hand.
“I want to create a future together. Would you allow me?”
The significance of the gentle touch on her fourth finger was unmistakable.
Stella took a deep breath, attempting to steady her racing heartbeat. She was at a loss for how to handle the overwhelming emotions coursing through her. Suddenly, her eyes welled up with tears, causing his face to blur in her vision.
“You shed tears a lot. Don’t you know how much your tears hurt my heart?”
His warm hand touched her eyes.
“I’m glad. It’s because I’m happy…”
Her golden eyes shimmered with teardrops, creating a beautiful curve.
Captivated by her radiant smile resembling a white lily, Mason leaned in and pressed a gentle kiss on her eye.
Stella’s eyes widened in surprise, trembling slightly, but then her eyelids closed slowly as if savoring the moment. The next moment, his lips, tinged with a shade of red, delicately met hers in a tender embrace.
“I love you.”
Stella’s heart was drenched in the gentle, whispered words.
Simultaneously, a sensation of coldness on her fingers jolted her awake, causing her to open her eyes. A single tear trickled down her cheek as she beheld the radiant sparkle of the ring adorning her finger.
“I love you, too.”
From the very first time he expressed concern for her, she might have already been captivated by him.
The sea reflected in his eyes held a warmth that enveloped her soul. With a radiant smile, Stella blossomed like a bud that had just bloomed.
