Chapter 117 – Stella (1)
“Go to the Burgundy Empire.”
“Yes.”
Stella, who had been quietly lowering her head, gave a small reply.
From the beginning, she had no choice because the King’s command was absolute.
“The fate of our kingdom depends on this matter. So you must fulfill your duties as a princess.”
Her head bowed even more when she was told that since she had been allowed to live as a princess up until now, she should be worth that much.
“Know that your life will be lost if you act stupid in the Empire.”
Stella’s body trembled at the threat that Andre, who was standing next to her, spat into her ear.
“…Yes.”
Her voice couldn’t come out, so she wanted to just nod her head. However, she forced her voice because doing so would only make Andre angry. After barely escaping from the two and leaving the audience room, another obstacle appeared.
“Congratulations, sister. I heard you are going to be the concubine Burgundy Empire’s Emperor?”
The youngest Princess, Isabel, spoke to Stella as if she had been waiting for it. Contrary to the sarcastic way of speaking, she smiled lightly, and her appearance was fresh enough to befit her young age.
Despite Isabel’s provocation, Stella stood still without answering.
What was a concubine? It was nothing more than an offering to the emperor. If she didn’t catch his eye, he might cut her throat on the spot. Isabel didn’t know that either, so that was why she acted sarcastically like that.
“Father gave me an undeserved chance.”
Stella recited the set answer mechanically.
“Of course. He’s the Emperor of an empire. How can a half-princess be good for him?”
Isabel smiled brightly as she pulled herself away from Stella.
“I want sister to be happy in the Empire.”
As Isabel left the place, saying that she would definitely go see her off, Stella looked at her back indifferently before she walked away. It was a place where she could hold out when her mother was alive. After her mother died, she felt suffocated and cold.
Stella, who rubbed her arm as if a chill was coming over her, hurried her steps toward the annex.
‘…I can’t come back now, can I?’
She would never come back to Ielro, whether she got in the Emperor’s eyes or not. If she ever came back, all that was left for her would be death or hell.
‘Can I survive in the Empire?’
Only then would her mother’s will be fulfilled.
Her feet were heavy as she resumed her stopped steps.
A week later, she departed for the Burgundy Empire. Perhaps in order to impress the Empire, her carriage, as well as her escort knights and ladies-in-waiting, were all set to a level befitting a princess.
“You haven’t forgotten the etiquette I taught you, do you? You are now the representative of the Kingdom, so you must always behave properly.”
Hearing the request of the lady-in-waiting across from her, Stella responded indifferently.
Even after that, the lady-in-waiting continued her demands, but Stella listened to it with one ear and let it out the other one. That rigid lady-in-waiting was sent by Andre to keep an eye on her. Not only that, all the ladies-in-waiting and the escort knights accompanying her to the empire were Andre’s people.
She turned her head to the window as she felt suffocated.
‘…I heard that the Emperor of the empire is a cruel and scary person.’
There was no one to oppose the Emperor who conquered the Gemina kingdom at once. So, wasn’t her father offering her as a sacrifice like it was natural?
‘God, please let me survive…’
Stella forced her hand out and clasped her neck as a habit.
“The sun of Burgundy, His Majesty the Emperor, enters.”
With the attendant’s loud cry, the door opened and the sound of heavy footsteps followed.
“Greetings to His Majesty the Emperor. It is an honor to see you again.”
Andre bowed his head after giving a graceful greeting, and Stella, as well as everyone, greeted him with courtesy.
“Raise your head.”
The cold voice made her already tense body shrink even more.
Stella barely raised her head to face the Emperor of the Empire, who was a beautiful man contrary to her imagination. However, his insensitive expression and sharp eyes made viewers feel numb. Above all, the unrefined sharp energy flowing from him oppressed the air, making it difficult to breathe.
She had no time to pay attention to what the Emperor and Andre were talking about. There was a piercing pain in her side from Andre’s big eyes, so she hurriedly greeted.
“Gree-greetings to the, the sun of Burgundy. I, I am Stella Este.”
Not paying attention to the nervous greeting, the Emperor glanced at the doll and talked to himself. Then, saying that they would talk about the details later, he left immediately. It was only then that the tension was finally lifted off, and she could breathe.
Realizing belatedly that her necklace had become hot, Stella glanced around but couldn’t figure out who caused it.
“Are you okay?”
Just in time, Stella’s head turned to the gentle voice she heard from close by.
“Ah, yes. I’m okay.”
She nodded her head, not knowing who was asking.
“Our Majesty is a person who has been on the battlefield for a long time, so it must not have been easy to face.”
Looking at the first worried look from others since her mother’s death, Stella stared blankly at the man, forgetting about the change in her necklace.
“Oh. I should introduce myself, excuse me.”
The man, with the flowing blonde hair, corrected his posture.
“My name is Mason Buccleuch. I am the Chancellor of Burgundy.”
“Ah, yes. Nice, nice to meet you. I am Stella Este.”
Seeing Mason politely bowing his head, she also hurried to greet him. If he were the chancellor of the empire, Andre would have to greet him first.
She thought she missed it because she was too nervous.
Stella reflexively looked around, feeling that Andre’s reprimand would come at any moment. Fortunately, Andre didn’t seem to notice her mistake as he was greeting the ministers of the empire. As she unknowingly let out a sigh of relief, Mason leaned over to examine her complexion.
“You must be very nervous. Your complexion is not looking good.”
“It’s, it’s okay.”
Stella shook her head slightly with a face vivid of embarrassment.
“You must be tired from coming a long way. Why don’t you go in first and rest?”
It was nice to hear the sound of his voice in her ears, and even her heart was at ease. Stella carefully met his eyes. She had never seen the sea since she was born though his eyes resembled the sea she had only seen in pictures.
…Would the sea be as warm as his eyes?
The urge to go to the sea at least once surged like a tidal wave. Was that why? Even though it was the first time she had met him today, she was relieved.
“Thank you for your consideration, but I want to be here.”
It was certain that she would incur Andre’s wrath if she acted alone, so she refused Mason’s offer, trying hard to hide her disappointment.
On the other hand, Mason, still concerned, did not suggest it further.
Stella just silently watched Mason’s back as he did his job in silence.
“Liam, put a knight to the Princess and guide her through the garden.”
Stella’s eyes were watery as the Emperor turned his back coldly.
It was scary.
The more the Emperor’s face grew colder, the more she felt as if she had become prey in front of a beast. Still, she bit her lip and begged… otherwise, she would have to face Andre’s verbal abuse and violence. Above all, if she failed this job and went back to Ielro, she might die.
Nonetheless, the Emperor’s heart was as hard as steel, so there wasn’t a crack. Rather, she was gloomy, as if she would die to him first.
A single tear ran down Stella’s cheek.
“I will guide you through the garden.”
The knight who received the Emperor’s order showed a respectful attitude, but his expression was indifferent.
He was just following orders.
“Are you okay?”
For a moment, the Chancellor’s face, who was examining her anxiously, overlapped with the knight’s face.
…What was she thinking now?
Even a piece of bread was sweet to someone who had been starving for too long. It was too much for her. Come to think of it, the knights of the Empire were different from the knights of Ielro.
They did not belittle her when she was despised by the Emperor and wept.
‘Is it because I’m a princess from another country?’
The people here didn’t know that she was only a princess by name. Even so, their attitude of keeping a reasonable distance and being polite like this gave her a bit of a breather.
“Then, please.”
She had no reason to stay in the garden any longer, but she was embarrassed to go back right away. In addition, she wanted to postpone facing Andre’s anger as far back as possible.
“Then, let me guide you.”
It would have been enough to just give rough directions though the knight politely and meticulously guided her through the garden.
However, Stella couldn’t see the beautifully decorated garden at all. She was worried about Andre, who would be angry, and it was also because she was worried about the necklace that was hot a little while ago.
‘…It definitely reacted.’
As she habitually put her hand on her necklace, the heat just before felt cold, as if it were an illusion. This was the second time the necklace had reacted. It had never been like this before coming here.
‘Who is it?’
Even though she tried her best, since many people were together, it was not easy to identify it. First of all, it was not the knight here because the necklace was cold now.
‘Should I stay here until I find it?’
Lost in her troubles, the knight asked if she would like to go inside the garden.
Stella declined, not wanting to waste any more of his time, thanked him and turned. When she thought of Andre, her steps faltered like a beast being led to the slaughterhouse.
“Were you going out?”
As she forced herself to take her steps, she heard a soft voice. She raised her eyes reflexively and saw the Chancellor smiling lightly.
“Ah, I just came from the garden. I heard the garden here is beautiful.”
“I see. Are you on your way to the annex?”
“Yes.”
“I was on my way there as well. Would it be okay if I accompanied you?”
“Ah, yes.”
She gave a small nod and resumed her steps.
“Did you sleep well last night?”
“Yes. I slept comfortably.”
At his question, Stella answered with her gaze fixed in front while Mason adjusted his pace to her.
“I’ll see you at dinner tonight.”
Her expression instantly turned pale at the thought of having to face the Emperor again. Noticing the blood had disappeared from her face, Mason added his words cautiously.
“Our Majesty is callous, but he is not one who wields a sword without reason.”
Stella couldn’t find anything to say to reply, so she only pursed her lips.
“Just be careful about Her Highness the Princess. Then, you’ll be fine.”
…Was it a request or a warning? Stella couldn’t easily understand.
The next moment, the warm eyes met her.
“I’ll be there too, so don’t worry too much.”
Her heart, which had been beating anxiously, gradually regained its stability at the kind voice. At that moment, Stella thought.
She wanted to go to the sea before she died.
