Chapter 76
Adam raised his hand that had caught the snake and opened his mouth.
“He got attacked by the snake Holly kicked.”
“Oh, my God!”
Holly widened her eyes and covered her mouth with her hand. She couldn’t resist her mouth twitching as she remembered all the words George had said to her.
‘…That’s divine retribution.’
“It’s not enough that he might get castrated, aren’t you being too much for laughing so openly?”
As Adam looked at her with cruel eyes, George was in so much pain that the veins stood on his forehead. Holly quickly erased her laughter.
“Hmhm, I didn’t laugh.”
“Why are you suddenly taking his side? Did you have a sense of kinship with him?”
When Badin made fun of Adam, who was once kicked in the groin by Holly, he answered in fury.
“Who are you grouping together with trash?”
George, who was referred to as trash, this time glared at Adam.
“Let’s just have breakfast and leave.”
Badin, who was full of energy at mealtime, eventually sighed deeply with a depressed face.
“Are there any fruits that taste like meat?”
“We’ll have to find the treasure soon, for the meat’s sake.”
The next moment, he glanced at Adam with eyes wondering what meat and the elven family treasure had to do with it.
“With it, the elves over there will be able to make a pact with the fire spirit.”
Adam responded as he pointed at George with his chin. George, who had been glaring at him, turned his head away in astonishment as if he had been burned when Holly’s eyes met his.
‘I should have kicked him once.’
She snorted.
“There are a lot of fruit trees on the way, so we better move first.”
As George said in a suppressed voice, Adam nodded at his words and added.
“There is no need to rush, but there is no need to waste time.”
As soon as they opened their eyes, they started walking toward the east where Lamia lived.
As Holly stretched out her arms to pick fruit, her eyes met the slit eyes.
“There are more and more snakes.”
When she looked over her head, a snake coiled around each branch like a trunk.
‘…I can’t pick the fruit because of the snake.’
Holly licked her lips in regret.
In the meanwhile, Cahill, who was watching her from the side, reached out his arm and plucked the fruit, which she was looking at. He was so fast the snake couldn’t see its movement. Then, he rubbed the fruit on his shirt and handed it to her.
“Eat it.”
Holly accepted it with a wide smile. The crunchy sound was refreshing.
“You should try it. too.”
Saying so, she turned the fruit to the unitten side and held it out to him. Cahill, who was staring at it, grabbed her wrist and turned the fruit again.
“This side looks more delicious.”
He ate exactly where her teeth marks were.
“But there are strangely many snakes.”
Adam, who was walking in the front and opening the way, spoke up as he noticed the peculiarity.
“It means that the den of the d*mn thieves is not far away.”
All eyes were on George.
“Isn’t it because some idiot got possessed by a monster and took the family treasure and offered it up?”
Holly had been very fond of Adam’s mouth who had moved without restraint since they were with George.
“Lamia’s temptation is fatal.”
Even when George tried to make excuses as if he couldn’t help it, the pitiful look in his eyes could not be hidden before he continued with a look of indignation.
“Hng. Do you think it would be different for you?”
As he glanced at Cahill, who held Holly’s hand and smiled, curling up his lips, Adam’s face contorted at the apparent ridicule.
“You’ll give that woman to Lamia as food in no time.”
However, Cahill did not budge from George’s provocation, while Holly gulped with a nervous face and asked Adam.
“Does Lamia eat people, too?”
A picture of a woman with alligator-pointed teeth appeared in her mind.
— I’m confident in running away.
A triumphant voice soon rang in her head. Shiver was more sensitive to her feelings than anyone else because it was bound by a contract with her.
“Yes. I will trust you.”
Replying to Shiver, she hugged it tightly and rubbed her cheek against the soft fur before someone pulled her closer to them.
“You have to trust me.”
It was Cahill, who was glaring at Shiver with a sullen face.
“I won’t let someone else eat Holly…”
Holly blocked Cahill’s mouth, who was constantly speaking of his desires. As George said, the appearance of the snake seemed to be related to Lamia. Soon after, a gloomy swamp appeared though it was different from the swamp she knew.
“The swamp…”
The swamp was boiling like soup on a fire.
“As expected, it’s here!”
George, seeing the seething swamp, cried out with a twinkle in his eyes. They felt uneasy about the uncertain tone.
“I heard that Lamia stole it, but it doesn’t seem like that?”
Badin asked sharply.
“That, that… because I had already lost my mind because I was possessed…”
George stammered in embarrassment. Although he was talking gibberish, he soon regained his confidence and shouted.
“Still, it must be here! That seething swamp is proof!”
The absurd logic made Holly burst into laughter.
The group walked along a narrow path beside the swamp. The leaves of the trees were thick, and the surroundings became darker and darker, and not even a ray of sunlight could come in.
Holly, who was avoiding the slippery moss, stepped on a thick tree root and stumbled.
“Ack!”
With a twinkling moment, she was in Cahill’s arms.
Seeing her leaning against his chest, he let out a sigh of relief and he raised his head and glared at George with fierce eyes.
“Ugh!”
George stopped and curled up. A cold aura that suddenly hit him all over his body constricted his heart.
“Didn’t you say it was close?”
Adam also opened his mouth nervously while raising his arm and wiped the sweaty forehead. The surrounding temperature was too high, because of the boiling swamp.
“It must have been around here…”
George seemed to be intimidated by the sharp gaze, and his words slurred. He looked for the way more aggressively than before.
The path got progressively more difficult. Holly did not hesitate to ride on Cahill’s back for her safety and quick movement.
— You can ride on my back…
Shiver grunted, rubbing its head against her feet as Holly flinched. Since she wasn’t used to the spirit yet, she didn’t think that she could enlist its help.
“Next time.”
Holly leaned over and stroked Shiver to comfort it.
“What does the dog say?”
Cahill asked, disapproving of the conversation between her and Shiver. It seemed that everyone except Holly could see Shiver but could not hear the voice in her head.
“Nothing.”
As she withdrew her hand from Shiver and hugged him tightly, that alone cut off Cahill’s interest in Shiver and even made him hum. In the meanwhile, Adam, who had been walking in the lead, glanced back at them and sighed.
“Be careful. It’s not a proper path, so if you look away for a moment, you will miss the person in front of you.”
When he removed his hand from the branch, it bounced back and covered his back.
Cahill, who was watching it, flashed his eyes. As he turned Holly, who was clinging to his back, he gazed at her and grinned as their eyes met.
Holly swallowed a moan inside.
‘…He’s thinking of losing them on purpose.’
It seemed that she could understand his heart even if he did not speak of it, but she had no intention of interfering with his plans. As Holly stayed silent in tacit agreement, Cahill gradually slowed down, deliberately dropping himself out of line.
“Shiver. You go back.”
When she whispered softly so that no one else could hear, Shiver looked at her. Even though its voice didn’t ring in her head, the feeling of dislike was conveyed.
Still, Holly was adamant.
“Quickly.”
It would be obvious what they would do if she and Cahill were left alone, so she couldn’t let it watch. In the end, Shiver glared at Cahill and disappeared.
At that moment, Adam looked back.
Holly was nervous as he gauged the distance between the party, but he took one look at her and then turned his head away again. She soon lost sight of Badin, who was obscured by the leaves and could barely see the top of his head.
