Chapter 115
“You’ve picked the wrong person. Who wouldn’t fall for that sweet man?”
“…What?”
“So, what was the reason for going this far? What was your ultimate goal in turning me into a crown princess or the Duchess of Persen?”
In response to her inquiry, Rupert’s gaze turned vacant, his mind seemingly replaying her words.
After a moment, a stern expression took over his face as he forcefully released his grip on her shoulder. The sudden movement caused Min-ha to lose her balance and fall onto the magic circle, her body meeting the floor as she glanced up at him in bewilderment.
With an icy demeanor, Rupert sneered at her and spoke in a chilling tone.
“…Why should I tell that to someone like you?”
“What?”
“D*mn it. Even though I knew that the soul within this shell was different, when you speak with this face, saying the same words as ‘Minase,’ it makes me confused. If it weren’t for that lowly b*stard’s story, I might have foolishly remained bewitched.”
“….”
‘…It was a mistake. I should’ve kept my feelings hidden until the end. If I had drawn out Rupert’s words a little more, I could have bought some time and learned the reason behind his actions.’
Min-ha’s heart sank as she realized that a single mistake had cost her the chance to hear the crucial information. Filled with disappointment, she closed her mouth in defeat.
In the meanwhile, seizing the opportunity, Grand Duchess Blaine swiftly approached Rupert as if she had been waiting for this moment and raised her voice in a loud shout.
“Lo-look, Rupert! Everything that woman has shown us so far was just an act! Even her words from earlier were all lies!”
“…Shut up, Louise. Once everything is over, I’ll properly explain what happened earlier.”
Rupert shoved Louise out of the way as she came toward him with a murderous glare before he glanced back at Judith and Morgan, who had been watching the situation from behind him.
“Judith. Let this girl pass out for a moment. It’s not going to get anywhere if we let her keep talking.”
“Understood, my lord.”
“Oh, what a shame. I was hoping to see a bit more of the acting skills of this lady from another world.”
“Stop with the nonsense, Morgan. What you need to focus on right now is getting Minase’s soul back in order… By the way, is it okay to use magic on her while that girl is unconscious?”
“It could be a little risky, for example, if one part of the body doesn’t move at the will of the ‘soul’…”
“If we can just bring back that person’s soul, it doesn’t matter.”
“…If that’s your wish, well. I have nothing more to say.”
Under Rupert’s menacing glare, Morgan observed the fallen Min-ha with a curious expression while, a sense of darkness engulfed everything before her as Judith slowly advanced towards Min-ha.
‘Oh no. What should I do…’
She desperately pondered, searching for a way to buy more time. Still, no matter how much she thought, a viable solution eluded her.
With her hands and feet bound, she struggled on the magic circle, doing her best to keep Judith at bay but resisting with constrained limbs had its limitations. Before long, Judith easily overpowered her, bringing her hand dangerously close to her throat.
Although Min-ha knew that he intended only to render her unconscious, a paralyzing fear gripped her entire body. She kept her eyes tightly shut as she watched Judith’s hand inching closer.
“…It won’t be long.”
But then, as he approached, she caught a familiar floral scent. Along with it came a faintly recognizable voice whispering softly.
The voice covered her eyes.
An overpowering drowsiness abruptly washed over Min-ha, rendering her unable to even twitch a finger. Despite her efforts to move any part of her body that she could, Min-ha couldn’t withstand the overwhelming sleepiness that engulfed her.
“Looks like she’s unconscious. Now, let’s begin, Morgan.”
“Yes, Viscount.”
The voices of Rupert and Morgan could be heard, gradually fading away amidst her diminishing consciousness. As an incomprehensible incantation followed, accompanied by flickering lights that strangely danced before her eyes, Min-ha realized that Morgan was casting some kind of magic.
‘…I’m sorry, Seth. It seems this is my limit.’
With that thought, she lost consciousness, swallowed by a chilling sensation and a sense of haziness that seemed to envelop her entire body.
Meanwhile, the news of the witch’s escape from the underground prison quickly reached the Emperor.
And that news was enough to pull the Emperor out of his inner chamber, where he had declared that no one would disturb him after a series of troublesome events. He was furious at the fact that the witch had once again found a way to escape from the confinement.
In a chilling tone, he addressed Oliver, the Captain of his royal guard, who had delivered the report on the witch’s escape.
“The witch escaped?”
“…That’s right, Your Majesty.”
“Who helped her escape?”
“We haven’t been able to ascertain that yet. However, according to the recent report, it seems certain that the witch used magic to escape from the prison.”
“So, are you saying that the witch escaped on her own, Captain Oliver?”
“No, that’s not the case. The witch didn’t seem to possess enough power to break the magic that binds the underground prison, so she would never have been able to escape on her own.”
“Then, it must be true that someone aided the witch in her escape.”
“….”
Oliver’s response further fueled the Emperor’s anger, intensifying his fury.
Simultaneously, his thoughts turned to Duke Persen, his trusted subordinate who had been tasked with handling the situation. In a low and simmering voice, the Emperor whispered, contemplating the possibility the escaped witch posed to his beloved Grand Duchess Blaine and her two sons.
“Was he requesting more time for this reason?”
“Your Majesty…”
“Bring Duke Persen before me immediately. If he resists and refuses to come, drag him before me by the throat if necessary.”
“Yes, Your Majesty.”
“And also, gather knights and officials where Grand Duchess Blaine, Charles, and Minuel are staying. Since the witch has escaped, we don’t know what she might do next.”
“I’ll obey your order, Your Majesty.”
After issuing the orders, the Emperor cast a brief glance at the bustling knights before releasing a long sigh and reclining on his throne.
If another incident were to occur, he might even have to personally remove Duke Persen. Hoping that Duke Persen wouldn’t be implicated in this matter, he pressed his fingers on the armrest, his expression filled with anguish.
Several hours later.
Having read the letters left by ‘Minase Persen’ at Persen Castle and gathered all the information she could from Vivian, Seth allowed her to stay within the mansion. He retreated to his study alone as he anxiously awaited the arrival of morning.
Restless and sleepless, he was determined to inform the Emperor and exonerate Min-ha from the false accusations. The night would be spent in anticipation, counting down the hours until everything would be resolved with the arrival of dawn…
“Your Excellency, are you in the office?!”
It was then.
A voice calling his name from outside reached Seth’s ears. With a slightly narrowed gaze, he asked in a concerned tone.
“What’s the matter, Sir Lancelot?”
“The Emperor has sent a messenger! His Majesty demands your immediate presence at the palace!”
“….!”
In response to Lancelot’s reply, he abruptly pushed his chair away and rose from his seat. Despite originally planning to have an audience the next morning, it appeared that the Emperor’s impatience grew after receiving the correspondence.
He swiftly donned his conqueror’s jacket and cape, both hanging on a coat rack in a corner of his office, before making his way outside and casting a glance towards Lancelot, who stood by the door.
“I requested an audience for tomorrow morning, so why is His Majesty seeking me now?”
“Well… it’s because the Duchess has escaped from captivity.”
“…What?”
“His Majesty informed us of the news and immediately ordered Your Excellency’s presence. Presumably, he has named you as the one behind this.”
Hearing Lancelot’s report, Seth felt his head turn blank.
This was a serious matter. The fact that she had disappeared meant that someone had intervened… and that someone was undoubtedly Rupert.
That meant that Rupert could have done something to her.
‘…D*mn it, it must mean that they had been targeting her instead of me.’
His vague speculation turned into a convincing certainty. Even though he wouldn’t know for sure the method they used to manage to get her out of jail or the motives behind such an act, there was one thing he knew.
…There was no more time to waste.
He swallowed the curses under his breath and shouted at Lancelot.
“Lancelot, immediately gather all the knights who were assigned to investigate the Duchess’s case in front of the eastern annex! You’ll lead them and follow me. I’ll join you after collecting Minase Persen’s correspondences in my office!”
“Yes, Your Excellency!”
Startled by the sudden turn of events, Seth let out a sharp shout and hurriedly returned to his office. He hastily collected the correspondences and securely stowed them away in the chest where they were originally kept.
Without wasting a moment, he reached for the sword positioned beside his desk and swiftly left the confines of his office.
Just when he believed that everything was settled and prepared, an unexpected twist unfolded before him. Seth chastised himself for the brief moment of relief he had allowed himself to feel.
‘…Please, I hope it’s not too late.’
There was only that wish in his head as he hurriedly rushed out.
